i’ve been watching hunter x hunter and although i still have a lot left to watch (i just started the third season) there’s something that’s stuck in the back of my mind that i keep returning to

the relationship illumi has to killua is so intensely maternal

i think what initially drew my attention to this was when illumi revealed himself to killua during the hunters exam. he said something along the lines of “this isn’t how dad and i raised you”, the phrasing of which discounts their mother completely, instead putting illumi in the role of the mother. whether this was the intention or not, this leads me to believe that (at least the way illumi perceives it), kikyo did not raise killua and that illumi believes he filled the role of “mother” in killua’s life more than she did. that of course wasn’t the focus of the scene but the phrasing just seemed so intentional compared to something like “this isn’t how we raised you” or “this isn’t how you were raised” at the very least it shows that illumi feels like raising killua was largely his responsibility.

The dynamic of his relationship w/ Killua is a big part of what drew me to him. How it’s such an intense, smothering maternal approach instead traditional older brother archetype(?). Think the only thing I would suggest is that seeking out Killua/pursuing him isn’t his sole purpose. This man is driven by power, and you’ll see how it unfolds later in the series :) Also interesting how much Killua respects him, if you can call it that? Despite everything that Illumi has done to him (again, you’ll see later in the Chimera Ant arc & Chairman Election Arc), he still sees him as family. And threatens to cut him off / disown him as his older brother if he crosses the line.

Also, be mentally prepared for the Chimera Ant Arc!! I pray your therapy card doesn’t decline 😭😭

Child-repulsed Illumi headcanon, anyone?

I keep seeing fics/headcanons where Illumi has a massive breeding kink/is desperate for children of his own which... yeah sure. I see where you're all coming from there. I don't hate it or even necessarily disagree...

BUT... Am I the only one who can also see the total opposite being possible?

Think about it, he spent first decade or two of his life forced to act as a parent figure to not one, not two, not three but FOUR younger siblings. I can very easily imagine that now he's an adult/living independently, the idea of having to deal with any more kids is just... Absolute nightmare fuel for him.

Imagine, a totally child-repulsed Illumi. An Illumi who is borderline obsessed with birth control, insisting on AT LEAST two methods of contraception before even considering PIV sex... Illumi tracking his partner's menstrual cycle so he can AVOID sex when she's most fertile. Illumi that panics if his partner is late by a day or two and who may even resort to trying to force them into getting permanently sterilised. An Illumi who just wants to spend the rest of his life enjoying nice furniture, walls that haven't been scribbled on, being able to safely own breakable ornaments, having nice clothes that are not stained by various children's bodily fluids, quiet evenings spent reading or watching movies that are rated 18+, eating dinners that don't involve chicken nuggets and nights where he can sleep for a full 8 hours uninterrupted... Illumi who has zero interest in ever having kids. (If Silva and Kikyo want grandchildren, they can ask any of their other 4 offspring to provide them, because Illumi is DONE. He's not even the family heir, so why does it even matter to them if he has kids or not?)

Why does tumblr recommend me these things at my most hormonal point of the month…
