Okay, as for reviews, I think my plan is to finish Bad Batch and then go through The Acolyte but review them not only a standalone episodes but how they fit into the larger picture of the show now that it’s finished. Hopefully I can working on these soon.
I know I’ve been so absent (partially because I got a paid Star Wars review gig that took up my time for a little bonus points if you can figure it out ) but that episode kicked ass on so many levels. Whew. Haven’t been as excited about live action Star Wars since the Andor finale. Maybe that’s the motivation I need to get these reviews done.
So obviously, I'm behind on reviews. Would people prefer that I finish The Bad Batch before writing The Acolyte reviews? Or would it be better for me to review Acolyte as it comes out and sandwich in the missing Bad Batch ones as I go?
Reviews for the last four Bad Batch episodes and Tales of the Empire will happen. Both just happened to land during finals week and so I'm buried in mountains of grading papers and writing portfolios and I'm also like very close to making another big career move in the next week or so. I love Star Wars. I love writing reviews. I love all you wonderful readers who have stuck by this blog for over a dozen years. But it's been very hard to make this a priority in the last two months. I'll get there though!
Anyways, May the Fourth be With Y'all!
I apologize for the review delays! I've been really swamped with real life stuff these last few weeks and haven't had time to sit down and write them. Hopefully I'll be caught up soon! Thanks so much again for your patience!
So you're confident that the Acolyte will be good because of trans women and non-binary people? That isn't a mark of quality. It's just pandering. You should be focusing on the story and it's execution. Not how many "diversity" checkboxes are checked.
That's not what I said? There is plenty of bad media with trans and nonbinary people in it. There's plenty of bad Star Wars with trans and nonbinary people in it.
I'm happy to see trans talent working on a high profile Star Wars project and it actually seems like it might be good. I might be proven wrong, but that's where I'm at right now.
People can be excited about the inclusion of marginalized communities in media and be capable of judging creative work on its artistic merits. We are complex creatures with complex brains capable of comprehending multiple ideas at the same time.
Look, I was already on The Acolyte hype train but I'm so excited that it's the first Star Wars project to have a nonbinary lead and trans women in its cast and crew. And! For once! I'm actually decently confident that it'll be good!
So if I'm discovering (largely thanks to Baldur's Gate 3) that I actually might really like romance stories set in fantasy settings, what should I read/watch/play? Bonus points if its queer. Extra bonus points if its trans. Extra extra bonus points if its trans femme.
Okay but in an ideal world Star Wars would be:
Big event films that come about every few years and are the result of someone's creative or storytelling vision assisted by just a little bit of franchise oversight for the sake of continuity/coherence.
Live action shows more focused on character drama and long form storytelling which only have a few major set pieces per season.
Animated series (and comics/books) that can serve as continuity fill-in-the-blanks while also doing weirder, wackier, and more outside the box storytelling than can't be done in a live action production.
Are you a professional writer? I really enjoy your reviews
Thank you! I am actually! It doesn’t fully pay the bills but I do publish reviews, articles, essays, fiction, etc. I don’t share them here because I like to keep my Tumblr and professional life separate, but they’re out there!
Hope you're okay
I’m well! I’m sorry if I gave off the impression that I wasn’t! I’ve been a little bit more quiet on here lately because life is busy and I typically sort of go on hiatus between shows. But yes! I’m okay! Thank you for checking!
It's been a while since I showed my face on here so I figured I'd post a little transition timeline to sparkle up your days a little.
So I'll admit that part of the reason last week's review is late is because I was a little let down and my enthusiasm to write a response was way down.
BUT I loved, loved, loved this week's installment. A joyful, mysterious, weird, and creative Star Wars adventure. Classic space fantasy adventure in the best of ways. I was delighted the entire time.
I really want to be proven wrong, but the Ahsoka show is fighting such an uphill battle for me. Everything about it just makes me wish we were watching the continuation of Rebels in animation. Regardless of the transphobia allegations against her, Rosario Dawson's portrayal of Ahsoka feels very stiff and lacking in a lot of the passion and energy that defined Ashley Eckstein's take on the character for so many years. I'm also just worried that the entire thing may just feel like one of those live action Disney movies that are competent but feel grafted onto a medium that isn't really suited for the story being told. And it's such a huge ask for a show to demand that viewers have at least some familiarity with two different animated shows in addition to the live action series that it's sharing a continuity with.
There's also just the matter that of the four seasons of Favroni shows we've gotten so far, I've only really been happy with the first season of The Mandalorian and even then that took a while to click. I'm hoping that Dave Filoni is more comfortable in live action now and that his storytelling instincts from The Clone Wars and Rebels will shine through in a way they haven't in The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett, but I'm not entirely confident that it will play out like this. I desperately want to be proven wrong. The trailers have been cool. I'm just anxious.
If you existed in the world of Star Wars, what would you want to be?
Alive.
I don't know, existing in the Star Wars universe sounds scary as hell.
In terms of what kind of role I would want to play? Well, I kind of hate fascism so I would probably want to be involved with the Rebellion or Resistance depending on what era it is. I think I'd love to be a stafighter pilot in the fight against the Empire or First Order. During peace time, I think I'd take a break from fighting and be a journalist or writer traveling around the galaxy and sharing the stories of the many different cultures and people to encourage understanding and equity?
I absolutely don't want to be a Force User that's way too stressful and too much pressure. And, I kind of don't think I have the stomach to be a criminal or someone who kills anybody outside of the fight against tyranny. So rebellion pilot/writer it is!
Hey everyone,
Having a crappy mental health day so the review will likely be out a little later than usual. Thanks for your understanding!
You're one of my favorite Star Wars blogs. I love reading your thoughts
Thank you so much, anon! This has been a favorite hobby of mine for (holy shit) a dozen years now and it's really been the interest and support of you readers/followers that has kept me at it as life gets more complicated. I hope you keep enjoying my writing and I apologize for the delay in my Bad Batch review (it should hopefully be done soon).
