Nights at the Wreck were some of your favorites. Nights where Mike Carrera would reluctantly offer everyone some food after his daughter pleaded, reminding him it’s going to go in the trash at the end of the night anyway.
These same nights, most of the regular customers were long gone, leaving the place empty. Which also gave you all the freedom to rearrange some tables off to the side to make your own dance floor.
You and JJ swayed back and forth in the center, your other friends orbiting you as they danced too. But you weren’t really paying attention.
The vibration of your phone in the back pocket of your jeans distracted you for a moment as you paused your movements, and subsequently JJ did too.
The number on the screen wasn’t saved in your contacts list, and normally you wouldn’t have given it a second glance before pressing decline. But the call you’d been waiting on was much more important than a spam call. And the risk of not taking it and letting it go to voicemail was one you weren’t willing to take.
“I have to take this, babe. I’ll be right back.”
