Life-Hack for buying unsold Halloween candy:

Some stores mark up the price the day before so they can "discount" it to the original price (or higher)

Ex: a bag of snickers at a local grocery store, in my area, a week before Halloween was $5.99USD, the day after Halloween it was "discounted" to $6.99 and said on the tag it was marked down from $8.99USD

Not all stores do this though, so avoid being scammed (or missing out) by noting the price of the things you want to buy several days before Halloween, and compare it to the price after the Holiday.

it would be awesome if we could buy less from these brands, and encourage friends and family to do the same :)

instead of buying from these brands, try:

  • buying from local brands/small businesses
  • buy from store brands: most grocery and box store chains have their own food brands that are more affordable than other name brands
  • buy from brands you know make ethical choices
  • make things homemade (some of the items on this list are things you can find recipes for online and learn to make yourself)

This is the link from the video. It’s important that we try to take action. Don’t buy chocolate that may be connected with slavery. In the link there’s also information about slavery free chocolate.

On chocolate, coffee, tea, other products coming from the global south: if you can afford it, buy only products with some kind of a certificate that demonstrates the product has been ethically produced (and this has been verified by an outside agency), such as the Fairtrade, UTZ or Rainforest Alliance certificate.

But also beware that some producers have made up their own certificates, with no outside oversight. These essentially fake certificates include Cocoa Life, the certificate invented by Mondelez – one of the companies listed behind the link for using slave labour, who stopped using Rainforest Alliance certified cocoa and switched to their own certificate instead.

  • Mars (M&M, Snickers, Dove, etc)
  • Mondelez (part of Kraft) (Cadbury, Toblerone, Oreos)
  • Nestle
