“As an artist you compete with reality, and the order of reality is always more interesting than the order you can make. But, because you make the order, it becomes information.” -Urs Fischer
Jennifer Bartlett is an artist who paved the way in the 1970s for younger, especially female, artists interested in monumental installation. She became known for her signature grid works: fabricated steel plates coated with white enamel and a silkscreened grid. As opposed to other artists at the time who used the grid to model mathematical ideals and consistency, she would playfully arrange colors and forms and shapes. . 😍❤ these colors. I love the juxtaposition of Kapoor's proposal for the Princess Diana memorial (left) against the vivid reds and blues of his other piece. . (Reading about the decision not to use Kapoor's proposal for the memorial has actually been interesting, I recommend googling those press clips) . . . #artbooks #arthistorian #arthistory #bookstagram #booklover #igreads #instabooks #modernart #contemporaryart #exhibitioncatalogue #artexhibition #arte #bibliophile #artlover #art #painting #sculpture #installationart #anishkapoor
Things I learned while researching this image: Merrill Wagner would paint on a surface using different mediums (oil, acrylic, watercolor) and watch how each changed according to weather, heat, time, etc. I'm so drawn to her outdoor works like this. . . . #artbooks #arthistorian #arthistory #bookstagram #booklover #igreads #instabooks #modernart #contemporaryart #exhibitioncatalogue #artexhibition #arte #bibliophile #artlover #art #painting #merrillwagner #5womenartists #womenartists #femaleartists

Artist Statement: This series is a response to the inaction of my American university to numerous sexual assaults by football players. Survivors were cast aside without justice, while the athletes continued to play. The university received millions of dollars in donations to build a new stadium and to expand the football program, while ignoring the abuse and rape of women.
These are photographs of footballs cut open and turned inside out. Footballs look solid and phallic until their cavernous interiors are revealed. This represents the possibility for softness and femininity. A resistance to societal expectations and an exploration of the interior is crucial to promoting change, understanding, and respect.

A Page from the Drawing Papers Archive
This page from Drawing Papers 34 features an image of the collaboration of Cecilia Vicuña and César Paternosto consisting of spun wool and watercolor pencil on paper created in 2002.
In 2002 Cecilia Vicuña and César Paternosto presented an exhibition project in progress named DIS SOLVING: threads of water and light that incorporated drawings from the 1960s to the present, a wall drawing by Paternosto, and a three-dimensional drawing with hand-woven thread by Vicuña. Over the course of the exhibition, Vicuña expanded her installation of lines in space while Paternosto’s drawings were gradually removed.
The Drawing Papers are a series of publications documenting The Drawing Center’s exhibitions and public programs and providing a forum for the study of drawing. For more information on Drawing Papers 34 please click here.

Spending the day reading way too much about German neo-expressionism, which will be the theme of my life this spring. Wishing I could be outside in the gorgeous sunshine instead tbh 😎 . Yinka Shonibare at Yorkshire Sculpture park. The best part of this book is seeing the outdoor works interacting with the elements- like here, the sculpture just rises out of the snow 😍 . . . #artbooks #arthistorian #arthistory #bookstagram #booklover #igreads #instabooks #modernart #contemporaryart #exhibitioncatalogue #artexhibition #arte #bibliophile #artlover #art #sculpture #yinkashonibare
Today's read: Yinka Shonibare MBE. This is an artist whose work I've seen a lot in person without knowing too much about the why's. Shonibare is a british-Nigerian artist living and working in London. His works explore ideas of culture and identity, race and colonialism and autobiography. The photo above is the text that debuted alongside his exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture park in 2013. . . . #artbooks #arthistorian #arthistory #bookstagram #booklover #igreads #instabooks #modernart #contemporaryart #sculpture #blackcontemporaryart #yinkashonibare #art #arte #artlover #bibliophile
