The Weaver’s Lament

Hope you like this, a little fictional song/poem for the weaver to sing/recite at her loom. This is my first go at something a little more creative, so hopefully you enjoy it  - Renee :)

A Tale from a time long forgotten…

The Weaver’s Lament

I formed in the darkness from desire and lust Spent most of my time avoiding kings and dust. Preening, exploring and finding my way I learned of escape and sent spiders that day.

Wed to a brother, the oldest of three This was not the life I wanted for me Creature of Darkness and Death incarnate Soul stealer, sin eater, life falls, before it.

The three kings ruled and dominated the land Blistering cold , frost, barrenness came from their hand Fearful and tired of being trapped I waited and watched, then I snapped.

Jumping from realm to realm until I found A place that was bright and light and full of sound. Glittering light fell and scattered on dark stone The world I was now in, would be my new home.

ACOTARverse Theory

Koschei is the main antagonist of a Russian fairy tale called Koschei and the Deathless.

Koschei abducts a princess, and when the hero comes to save her, she says that Koschei’s life is inside an egg, and the egg is inside a duck, and the duck is inside a hare, and the hare is in a log, and the log is in a lake. So if the hero destroyes the egg, that’s how he kills Koschei.

So essentially, this is something akin to a Horcrux - according to the fairy tale, Koschei can’t die if the egg is intact.

Now, we know that all of the books in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series are based on fairy tales from around the world (so far French, Greek, and German in order). We also know that the Bone Carver mentions a third sibling called Koschei, and that like the Bone Carver and the Weaver, this sibling possesses death powers.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Google the word ‘Koschei’ and you get a whole list of links about Koschei and the Deathless, retellings of Koschei and the Deathless, and Russian fairy tales.

So I’m betting that one of the upcoming ACOTAR novels (not a novella as this seems too major a threat for a novella plot) is based on this Russian fairy tale, and the antagonist is going to be Koschei, sibling of the Bone Carver and the Weaver.

Tagging @rayonfrozenwings because I know you do theories. Agree? Disagree?

Yes I think your on to something, I've seen a couple of people say the same thing about koschei the deathless and that link. I can't remember who exactly, but the two fan theory blogs I can think of off the top of my head are @propshophannah and @sparkleywonderful. I've tried looking into it but because I've never heard of it before... then fandom mentioned it, so I don't have too much information on the subject and google was not my friend.

Sjm likes to mix stuff together so I wouldn't be surprised is she linked the Swan lake story into it somehow.

Vaasa seems like such a new element to me, I haven't even tried to look at what her story would look like tbh, and that's just because I don't have any clue about about her yet and her connections - they are to no characters we know (apart from lucien). But I'll have to read your other theory-via te link- to comment on that.

In regards to Koschei being a "death god" or linked to the bone carver and styrga. I did a post on the origins of those people/creatures in the prison and that I thought that the bone carver and styrga were two versions of the same fallen angel/daemon (hence twins) and their names appollyon and ..... can't remember..... but that there was also a fallen angel who had power to transform humans into birds and keep them, I can't link it as I'm on mobile but it's possible there is a link between the three of them as "brother/sister/brother" and maybe also "fallen angel of death/fallen angel of death/ fallen angel", or all coming from the same place... and maybe if this is the case and koschei has been confined to the lake, like styrga was confined to the middle and the bone carver to underground. Also koschei would be without a part of his power as it is mentioned that "the fae long ago" took a part of the bone carver, styrga and koschei when she confined them to their places in the world. Ooooo I'm getting excited for these stories now!

The horcrux idea is very cool, and I'm sure there is another character with that sort of link but I cannot remember who. It's going to bug me now. Someone who should have died but didn't. Argh. Feck. I feel like this is familiar in the back of my head but I cannot put my finger on it. Anyway I love the idea of a character being able hide a part of themselves or protect themselves. (Maybe it was maeve with the owl? I don't think so I'm rambling now).

Anyone else have some ideas? @crownedwithstarz you like fan theory too, did you come across this one?

Weaver and the Ring

Not many come to the weaver. All had known that she is death and how right they are. But there are a few that knew that she was also the keeper objects better left lost. Cursed crowns, books that told you the future, her loot was endless.

A pretty one with wings appeared, her race was old, older than even the High Fae. At some point they had lost their way.

“I need for you to hold on to this for me. Until there comes a time when it is needed.”

It was not very often one requested an object be held, “Why?”

The pretty one explained, “Rhys is different, he would sacrifice himself for anyone he holds dear to his heart. I want for his wife or mate to do the same. If she is willing to face you, then maybe she will be strong enough and of the right heart for him. And Rhys wouldn’t send just anyone to their possible death.”

I had a mother once, a family, “Do you want me to kill the girl?”

“No, just safeguard the ring.”

“You know it will sit here for centuries and that is only if he survives what the cauldron has in-store for him. And if only his mate survives the trials she must face.”

She blinked with shock, “He has a mate?”

I knew the pretty one’s future, I knew many futures, “Not yet, but the threads show a girl, a girl with a mortal heart.”

“I’ll never meet her will I?”

We were death gods, that is how we knew the future, her death would be the catalyst for a better world, “No you will not, but you already know that since you are here. You would not need me if you did not already know.”

Love this 💕
