3 things I learned while being in a fandom.

1. You can teach yourself new skills for fun and they can be transferable to real life - like making edits/ using programmes/ using html to make the blog look nice.

2. You can actually meet nice people online and build friendships across oceans.

3. Being creative isn’t limited to a few or exclusive and fandom is a way to express this, through words, images, discussions and give them life.

Anyone want to add on? I’m feeling nostalgic for the “good ol’ days”…

Hello!

Have you read TOG?

If so, did you get it around the time Rowan appeared?

I wanted to know what that era was like in the fandom when Rowan emerged and all Chaolaena's theories turned to ashes. thanks for the previous answers.

I am quite distressed, I hope for years Elucien healed together.

I have read the TOG series but unfortunately, I only came across SJMs books in 2020 so I missed out on everyone's thoughts when SJM shifted from Chaol to Rowan.

I'm sorry I can't help in that regards but I'll tag a few other bloggers in case they can provide a little more insight!

(but I am in agreement with your last thought, Elain and Lucien deserve their stories to be told and SJM really has written them as two individuals who would be so complimentary to one another).

Avatar

Sorry hardly around these days haha.

Story time.

I read tog, and then com. And had to wait by my lonesome for hof. I wasn’t in fandom then.

When I read com I was shipping dorian and Celeana, I didn’t mind Chaol but I never thought of him as endgame. I was always sure it would switch up in book 3 (yes I started these books when it was supposed to be a trilogy). And then the ending of com in isolation was just telling me dorian was endgame because chaol was out.

I waited a wee while, then hof came out and I could tell that Rowan was endgame. The tension, the heat, the fact he looked like legolas and I knew SJM liked legolas. It seemed clear to me. Then I clicked that book 3 wanst the end, freaken SJM had changed it so Then I waited and waited and read qos, and loved queen of shadows and waited some more and went wtf! She has another book series! I refuse to read it! I want more tog! And did a mini Sjm boycott all by myself.

Then empire of storms came out - I cried, had a melt down, read Acotar and acomaf because !!! Wtf was empire of storms! And I needed more, and it wasn’t coming because of some stupid other series and I wanted it now! So I read acotar and Then I joined the fandom. Lol. Because it satisfied my itch of trying to figure out what was happening next.

I don’t know if that helped at all. I wasn’t in fandom at that time - just getting mad by myself. 😆

ACOTAR Fandom Demographics Survey

Hello ACOTAR friends and fans! I'm conducting an informal survey on the demographics of the ACOTAR fandom. It is completely anonymous, but please don't spam the survey or take it multiple times.

The questions are looking mostly at the age range, gender and sexuality, preferred characters, and preferred ships among ACOTAR fans.

I'd love for this to reach ALL sections of fandom, so I would really appreciate everyone reblogging this and sharing it with others! Feel free to share it on twitter/IG/tiktok/etc as well. I'm not on any of those social medias and don't have that kind of reach.

This survey will close on Tuesday, January 31st. Results will be posted soon after.

This survey was originally constructed for ATLA fandom and created by @aucatgirl.

10 years since the release of Throne of Glass

6 years since joining the tumblr fandom

5 years since making life long friendships

This series and fandom might be crazy at times, but I think about where it has brought me. The friendships with people all over the world who have similar interests. The conversations in mid afternoon (late at night for them) and voice chats and texts. The accent challenges, the events, the creations.

The creations, well - this fandom encouraged me to write theories when I was terrified that people would be mean. We collaborated and expanded on ideas.

I started writing fan fiction because of these books and realised that one kid in school who said my writing was boring turned me away from something I quite enjoy and I’m actually not bad at.

I learned how to edit photos and make edits. Using effects I never knew before. A skill I use now in my job! All from fandom.

So while I’m less active now, it’s been such an important journey for me.

So thank you Sarah.

Your books have sent me on a path that I never expected when I picked them up but I am so grateful for all of it.

omg i’ve never encountered someone that likes aelin but hates bryce but likes feyre? i feel like bryce and aelin are soo similar???? please elaborate!!

Yes, I get where you are coming from! And I wondered about it myself. But ultimately, when you take away their brash, confident personas, Aelin has a lot going on. There is nothing behind Bryce's "persona" to me, it's just who she is.

I'm gonna complain about Bryce here.

The easiest way to explain is to ask a question: what does Bryce care about? And honestly, two books and like 1.6k pages in, I have no idea. She has no goals. She has no values, or principles, or things she is striving for. If Danika hadn't died, she would have gone on being a party girl for like 80 more years. They chose their age for the drop based on the fact that aging wouldn't be apparent on them yet. Real noble and deep. We were told that the way that Bryce acts was supposed to be a front, to keep people from looking too deeply. But honestly, what would they see? What strength or goals or objectives was she hiding?

Whereas with Aelin, she was hiding not only her heritage, which Bryce was too, but Aelin was also hiding her love for Terrasen and her family, her hatred of Dorian Sr. and the way that he took over Erilea. Her confidence was earned! Aelin fought to save slaves in TAB despite knowing what it would cost her. She has actual real values and things that she cares about beyond herself. And that comes with flaws, like her difficulty in trusting other people, and she worried if she was good enough to lead and had guilt for things that happened to her as a child.

Bryce just doesn't have anything like that. She is slapped in the face on a daily basis with discrimination, and she would just shrug and move on not giving a shit about any of it, if it weren't for the fact that she is surrounded by who refuse to let it go. Literally the only reason she did things in hosab was because of Danika, again, because she kept finding out Danika's secrets. It wasn't because Bryce had actual shits to give about anything.

I also found Bryce rude for no reason. Aelin always had a reason. And the over-sexualization of Bryce, ugh. That's not on her character, that's on sjm. But it doesn't help.

Avatar

100O% give me a series about Danika instead, except there wouldn’t be any mystery because if bryce died it wouldn’t matter. Whoops. Also anon. There are a few of us who feel this way, guess it just depends what circles you are taking in.

I also feel like people don’t like to shit on a character if they can help it. So you are more likely to see praise for the characters they love and no hate at all, no love at all, just an absence of content.

I had thoughts about the acotar fandom and fandom etiquette and I'm not sorry.

I genuinely wonder if people wandered into the acotar fandom last year, after having read acosf, and didn't understand what corner of the internet they ended up in. Fandom is inherently very queer, in the broadest sense of the word. In the Judith Butler sense. Not just that there are gays everywhere, but there are disabled and neurodivergent and minoritized identities. We are here looking for more from canon, not just reinforcement that what we thought about canon was right. Fandom has existed for a long time to give stories to people who never saw themselves in the story, or who felt constricted by the mainstream, who felt like there wasn't a place for them in the media they consumed.

So when I see the acotar fandom being snide about "crackships" - though that's not an insult, it's just a description of how likely the pairing is in canon - and when I see the acotar fandom acting like shipping is a political stance/social justice cause, or when I see this fandom not understanding that you can ship things that have not been confirmed on the page, I have to wonder - where do these people think they are???

The most important thing about fandom imo is that there are no rules other than the number 1 rule: you are in control of your experience. That means that you block tags, or people, or follow tags, or people, or create, or consume, or whatever it is you want, but you cannot try to force your version of fandom on anyone else. If you don't like how someone else is engaging in the fandom, you block them and move on. It's that simple. There is no such thing as fandom police, it's every person for themselves. If you personally cannot stand the idea of Elain and Mor, then block that tag. If you really feel incredibly strongly about it, then block the people who use that tag. It's super simple, and it's been fandom practice for... literally decades now.

The acotar fandom has actually made this rule quite difficult in the past year because, for example, I have blocked upwards of 150 people on tumblr, and yet I know that some of those people continue to stalk my blog and make posts vaguing me. I've made my boundaries clear, those boundaries have been disrespected, and I know I am not the only one who experiences this. At least two times, people have taken me blocking them as a "challenge" to still try to interact with me despite the block. Thus far, my choices are to either attack those people head on, or act like they don't exist. I quite like pretending that they don't exist because those people are a waste of my time. However, I am not the only person they do this to and I know that turning the other cheek isn't that easy all the time, especially when certain people are so aggressive about being assholes.

The fact that people get mad at other users blocking them, that just baffles me. Again, blocking people is a time-honored and necessary tradition in fandom. You do not have to scroll through content you don't want, and having a presence in the fandom doesn't mean you have to allow all people access to your content! "This person blocked a bunch of us so we can't interact!" Yes, well, that's the point! They have drawn a line in the sandbox, you are not entitled to interact with whomever you want, and you should definitely respect the fact that someone has, for literally whatever reason they want, decided that they don't want to interact with you. The audacity of people getting mad about being blocked - is that harming you, somehow? Is that preventing you from screaming whatever you want to scream on your own blog? No? So what's the problem, exactly?

no 👏 one 👏 here 👏 owes 👏 you 👏 anything 👏

Disrespecting people's right to ship or headcanon or imagine whatever the fuck they want is another way that this rule continues to be violated. People are allowed to dislike/like whatever they want. Again, this is all about the only rule, you are in charge of your experience. Shaming people for what they like - whether it's a fluffy crackship or an abusive rarepair - is not okay. If you don't like something, then it's on you to block the content. It's not on you to show people the "error" of their ways because that's literally the opposite of why we are here!

It is not okay to tell other people how to exist in the fandom, and this moralistic high ground that people are taking in order to justify their shaming of other people is especially not it. That's the exact rationale that people are now using to say that in certain schools in the U.S., the idea of queer people existing is verboten. Why, oh why, do people think it's okay to come into one of the queerest space on the internet, and start throwing around morality-based arguments, when those types of morality-based argument are being used IRL to silence us??? Because people ended up in fandom and had no idea where they were (and apparently, still don't).

We exist in fandom (in part) because we already feel like there isn't a place for us in the mainstream. We are not going to allow a bunch of people who are so stuck up their ass in heteronormativity and whiteness and canon, to tell us what we can and cannot ship in fandom, a space that was historically made by and for queer people.

Example: if you don't like a specific ship, then you block that tag. The end. Maybe you talk about why you, personally, are not into it. We all have squicks. but you do not shame people for liking it, or try to tell them how and why it's bad that they like it. There is a HUGE difference between saying "here is why I don't like this" and saying "no one should ever like this!"

Fandom has etiquette, including tagging things appropriately, but the flip side of that is the understanding that tagging is a privilege, not a right. Fandom functions on the assumption that we are each looking out for one another by tagging content appropriately, but the second part of that assumption is that we do not tell one another what to do - if someone breaks rule number 1, then you decide if that bothers you or not. You cannot force them to comply, but you can block their ass. This is only tangentially related, but still relevant. It's still part of the whole "you are in control of your own experience" rule that we all live by.

I guess the whole point of this is to say: live and let live, y'all.

If someone draws a boundary, respect that.

Learn how to draw your own boundaries.

Stop being so freaking stuck on canon because that is not why we are here.

And have a gay gay gay gay day.

hi! you likely don’t remember me but i was originally crownstealer. i had a lot of stuff going on an unfortunately had to delete my old blog. i took a break and came back recently. do you mind listing a few acotar, tog, cc for me to follow? if not, that’s completely okay as well. ❤️

Avatar

Hey jaci! Yah man I remember. I have… not been active…. Like since before Christmas. I have moments and then vanish again. So I don’t really know who is active.

I do know that there has been a super annoying fandom war with people picking sides. So what I will say is - maybe decide if you only want to see some content or all content - it can get a bit gross with people slagging off others. The fandom war is azrielxelain vs lucienxelain vs gwynxazriel and a hangover from a court of silver flames so deciding what content out of that might affect who you want to follow.

Sorry I don’t have any blog recs, @bookofmirth just tagged me in a list so I guess there are those people. I’ve seen @acotars post some edits and stuff. Um I don’t even know which art accounts are active 😂. In my notes I’ve seen @elide-lochan-salvaterre share a few things and I think @verifiefangirl is still around. But as I said - I’m bad at knowing who is active and who isn’t coz I’m not actually on my dash that often.

Great to have you back tho. It’s nice knowing that I’m not the only crazy person still in this fandom or I’m not the only one who keeps getting sucked back in. Hahahhaha.

For me what most make sense is the IC consulting Merril about her research then Merril calling Gwyn and they all reunited which will lead Gwyn and Az to be close which will lead to their book buuut SJM is so unpredictable that I’m afraid I mean who would guess she would throw this marvel multiverse thing? So I’m a little afraid 😧

Yeah this is why I'm always like "GUYS PUMP THE BREAKS WAIT"

I don't *want* to be Debbie Downer about theories but also 😬 this is sjm we are talking about. The theorizing about what will happen next can be fun, but this is partly why I don't put a ton of stock in them.

That said, there are some theories or speculation that have more support than others. Like Az being heavily involved in the upcoming cc3/acotar5 plot is not based on single words that happened once that we decided to search in our ebooks. Him being next is based on a combination of plots, world, history, and character development, many of which are not about ships, but where the story seems to be headed naturally.

Avatar

tbh the way that @rayonfrozenwings was discussing the links between CC and acotar years ago and picking up all the hints makes me think that some theories can be trusted!

but always with a grain of "sjm will do as she pleases" salt thrown in lol

I would say there is a 50/50 hit rate too. I was a prolific theoriser but that means some theories hit the nail on the head and the others don't. haha.

I feel like its luck of the draw with a theory panning out - if you at least think about all the possibilities then you get to have fun exploring all the ways it would go. When people become so invested in a single theory that they hold it close - they get so disappointed when it doesn't pan out. It's like becoming invested in a Ship - doesn't work, have a cry - same thing.

And from my point of view, as myself having tried to write a fic. Getting 20K words in and then realising that it fizzles out to nothing because I don't agree with a location or direction - SJM could easily change the details coming up. Even if its foreshadowed in earlier texts.

The extra Excerpt that came with the original printed ACOFAS novella for ACOSF mentioned that Nesta would be training in the illyrian mountains - the actual sentence in ACOSF upon release was that they were going to train. full stop. SJM realised she needed to change something and did. I would not be surprised if there is printed information from earlier books where SJM has gone - nope that doesn't work anymore and switched it up. It's her prerogative to do so.

I wish people would just enjoy what sjm publishes. The community has become toxic and is knit-picking every little thing she does. When ACOSF came out, I was just excited she put out another book but a lot of people were being cruel because of a bunch of random irrelevant things. Can’t we just be happy with more content? 😭 I hate posts that comment crap like “if she was a better writer,” she came up with the whole ACOTAR series, the ToG series, and the CC series!!! I’d say that’s pretty freaking good!! (Plus she created freaking Rhysand and Rowan, and a character like Alein) ANYWAYS I just wish there was a little more appreciation and a little less knit-picking but maybe that’s just me 🤷‍♀️

guys I’m so tired of the Elriel vs Elucien debate

Like both of y’all are being mean to one another at this point

I constantly see Elucien people attacked by Elriels for being anti feminist or hating Elain or not wanting her to have a choice and that’s just…bullshit.

But I also see Elucien people make fun of Elriels for having theories about the mating bond or misreading the text and it’s just like while I personally find more evidence for Elucien at this point and while I have tons of Elucien friends…

*~the books intentionally present both Elriel and Elucien as options and so people aren’t stupid or wrong for shipping one or seeing evidence for one and not the other~*

Like ages ago people were saying they only saw Elriel as friend vibes but then that bonus made it clear that they at least want to fuck! Or make out. Whatever. Point being, people aren’t wrong for picking up on things SJM intentionally wrote into the books and then shipping it like.

Same case with Elucien. They are mates! Sarah did that.

She did this y’all.

The author created this love triangle quadrangle whatever. She intentionally wrote multiple ships with various levels of romantic and sexual attraction and attachment.

All readers interpret the text differently. That’s the point of fandom. This fandom happens to be obsessed with being ~right~ and while that’s not necessarily the point I get the impulse because everyone wants to see their ship be canon.

I think the biggest difference this time is neither side will back down.

Like in the past I’ve liked less than popular characters and “non-canon at the time” ships but people just accepted that we could all like what we liked and still get along.

This time there is very much a with us or against us vibe.

very curious anon that loves watching drama from the outside but never gets involved-

so, both elriels and gwynriels are completely certain they're right, and they make so many theories and long posts and all that jazz but... eventually the book will come out and then we'll see who got it right... and i'm just so curious about how the fandom will react!! obviously some will celebrate and post "told ya" and some will go ia for a while or bitch about it, but what about those accs that made in depth analysis? like yours for example, there's not that many accs that do it but some of y'all (on both sides) really seem to know your stuff yk.

and i guess that in my head i can see the stans that make a few comments and for the most part just shit-post get over it easily, but the ones that got really involved, either emotionally or intellectually (that's not the word but you get what i mean) ... looking forward to see how that turns out.

anyway, i just think it's funny that i'm more interested in how the "losing" side will react than the actual result haha.

no but for real i think it's fascinating and someone should make a study on fandom culture and shipwars🤭

I think that people already do study this stuff! (I just did a quick search in my university library website for the word "fandom" and it came up with 27k results.)

I don't think that people understand the lack of my caring about what happens in canon. The thing about this fandom that has been increasingly annoying is the way that everyone is OBSESSED with canon.

And when it comes to shipping, I almost could not care less. Literally nothing will happen in canon that will make me ship e*riel. If it becomes canon and they end up fucking for 800 pages, I will hate every single second of it. Then again, I also hate lysaedion, and it took me forever to get on board with elorcan, I am kinda meh on feysand after acosf. Nessian is pretty good. Rowaelin is OTP. I still finished the books and enjoyed other aspects of them besides the ships I didn't enjoy so much.

The things that I post are analysis of the book content that we know is canon, that we can analyze. I was an English major. I know literary criticism. I put that knowledge to use in fandom. GAH I still need to finish my post about how to do that in fandom. But I can guarantee you that not a single course I took asked me to analyze what would happen next in a series that was not yet complete. Not a single professor asked me to find "foreshadowing" in a book without having read the entire book or series first.

Personally, the fandom has driven me to make statements that I wouldn't have ordinarily. Y'all can ask @aelin-godkiller and @rayonfrozenwings, both who have known me in this fandom since early 2017. I have never liked theories because they are a shot in the dark. But now, everyone is SO OBSESSED with being right that it's driving me crazy. A few months ago someone asked me for proof that elucien would be endgame, and I said no. I'd still say no. I have very strong feelings in one direction, but I also know that sjm is going to do whatever the fuck sjm wants to do and we are just an unpaid part of the Bloomsbury marketing team.

I like meta. I like literary analysis, aka the analysis of the content that we have and that we know is true (in the loosest sense of that word, since we have to account for reader interpretation.)

I can predict what will happen when the next book is announced and/or comes out! There will be people saying "this was OOC!" or "sjm doesn't know her characters!" or "sjm wrote this for fanservice!" It's just a page from the fandom playbook when things don't go people's way.

Avatar

Ok first - wow true we are unpaid marketing and I know this but also, I hate that everytime I talk about this I’m just doing their work for them. The ship wars benifit them - SJM and her books are still on your radar and our lips 6mths later.

And secondly, I totally could have written this anon, I feel it - I kinda also want to get the popcorn. I’ve been here so long now I feel like I have to see things through.

Thirdly - My top post is a theory one from 2017 back when the fandom wasn’t divided in ships and across platforms. Theory. With about 1700notes. That’s huge! Unheard of today. Only art gets notes that high! Or shit posts. We may think fandom is “big” at the moment but it’s kinda just a few vocal people in their small subsets.

But yeah - predicting is hard work. I’ve only ever seen one theory that someone wrote come to fruition almost exactly and that was Maeve being Valg in tower of dawn. Technically me saying worlds were connected has kinda been proven butttt not exactly 100% right so I’m not calling it yet. Hahahaha. But I write theories for fun - I love the endless possibilities that come with writing them. People trying to write fics that follow on from canon are doing the same thing they just are doing the math in their beards instead of sharing it with the class.

I think it’s kind of invalidating that SAS are pushing the idea that all victims need to be ok with sex in order to heal. Gwyneth is not comfortable with being touched by men. I don’t think it’s right for her “fans” to write sex scenes or draw fan art of her in a sex scene when she’s not comfortable with that. We left off with her barely being able to be alone with men in the room she’s not ready and it’s not ok to assume she ever will be. Not everyone heals the same and Gwyneth isn’t ready.

guess we’re doing this *cracks knuckles*

1. gwyn isn’t real, she’s not gonna be upset if someone draws/writes her into a sex scene. fan arts and fics are for us, the fandom. if we want to consume that content i shouldn’t need to get a signed slip from the fandom police letting me know if that’s ok.

2. everyone’s healing journey is different, but the point of healing is just that: to heal. i’m not gonna go into detail about my own experience, but it took me a long time to feel comfortable and i still experience triggering moments when intimate. i have a friend who literally needs to leave the room when sex is mentioned in any form. she’s in therapy because she doesn’t want to have that reaction and hates feeling like she can never move on from her own trauma. everyone has their own journey and comfort levels which is why she doesn’t read these books that are romance and sex heavy. i chose to consume this content as did many other SA survivors. we want to read romance and sex and gwyn being written into those same scenarios or drawn in an intimate moment with someone should be no worse than seeing feysand or nessian fics/fan art.

3. we actually left gwyn off being hopeful about the future beyond the library. we got that bonus chapter where she appeared comfortable being alone with azriel. her healing journey is only just beginning and it’s not about gwynriel getting together, but about gwyn’s character feeling safe and happy in a world that isn’t kind to women. her joining the valkyries and forming a sisterhood with nesta and emerie was just as much a healing point as her being comfortable enough around azriel to be alone with him and talk/joke. she’s working on figuring out her comfort levels and if people want to explore how she may be intimate with someone that’s up to them. having not seen this same mentality regarding fics about rhys having sex with feyre just proves how sexist this whole argument is. why is it ok for rhys to be healed and move on from his trauma, but gwyn must remain stuck in hers?

4. no one is claiming SA survivors need to be ok with sex in order to heal. my point was that these 4 books are romance and sex heavy. if that is a trigger to someone they shouldn’t be reading these books in the first place. so for the fandom police to get all upset on behalf of SA survivors (please don’t call us victims, thanks) when gwyn is being portrayed in a fic or fanart having sex please shut up. if this is triggering to us we can let our voice be heard about it, but having taken the steps to read these 4 books being a SA survivor myself i don’t see any issues with seeing gwyn in these intimate moments. i would never presume to speak for an entire group of people, but as i said if it is triggers we will speak up, if it is triggering we won’t be 4 books into a fantasy romance series where it’s heavy on the sex scenes, and we wouldn’t be part of this fandom in the first place.

Perfectly said!

Well said.

The library is full of women who all heal differently and have different pasts and want different things.

Nothing wrong with fandom also creating different healing and futures for characters. That’s what fandom is.

I’ve been thinking about this one for a wee while but I just can’t think of anything. It’s like that meme from little Britain playing over and over in my head.

And I want to but I can’t.

It could just be the ship war and my brain telling me- it’s not worth it. Or creative juices are being spent elsewhere…

Or my brain going - but elain and gwyn how do they hang out? And the shrug emoji replying.

I am on struggle street.

But

Hear me out?

Anyone got some headcanons for this Nonnie?

Add on and maybe we will get some gorgeous ideas from people who are a little shy or unsure.

sometimes I wanted to give these people a piece of my mind.

I hate being treated like an idiot or I don't know how to handle fantasy books.

They make me feel dumb, with the speech You have to want Az happy and always with Elain afff.. It feels like a must. I read a lot of fantasy books and I don't even like clichés because I like twists and turns.

But I read a lot of what I like and if I don't like it, I skip and read something else.

If you let them put you down, like you're a bad person for not wanting a couple like that. I always try not to listen and look for friends to talk about and get rid of the bad feeling that sometimes gets.

It's unfortunately a common tactic, even since I first joined the fandom, and from what I can tell it's a thing across fandom in general. You can't like this one thing or you hate the character, or you can't like this other thing or you're an abuse apologist, or you can't like this other ship or you want the characters to be miserable, you can't like this ship or you're into ped*phllia, etc.

They never make me feel dumb because I know the extent of my intelligence, but it does piss me off that they make that assumption about everyone in the fandom. Like, stfu and back up your arguments, if you're so right. Don't sit behind your keyboard and try to discredit other people, many who are also intelligent and read closely and critically and read widely and have educations (formal or informal).

It costs zero dollars to just talk about the characters and keep other fans out of their mouths. In fact, it would probably save time and give them practice with critical thinking skills if they couldn't fall back on insults and insinuations.

Newsflash to them, being in the acotar fandom isn't exactly a high prestige hobby. 💀

This is also why I'm taking a mini-break (or planning to, we'll see). I have a 40+ page document to write for work and a ton of class planning to do, my summer class is wrapping up, I need to hire people for the academic year, I don't have time for 95% of these arguments because they are pointless.

Me: sitting in my Elorcan boat minding my own business while everyone else was trying to sink it and telling me how awful lorcan was, and I was just like - it’s ok I love them. Row row row.
