Writing a novel when you imagine all you stories in film format is hard because there’s really no written equivalent of “lens flare” or “slow motion montage backed by Gregorian choir”
You can get the same effect of a lens flare with close-detail descriptions, combined with breaks to new paragraphs.
Your slow-motion montage backed by a Gregorian choir can be done with a few technques that all involve repetition.
First is epizeuxis, the repeating of a word for emphasis.
Example:
Falling. Falling. Falling. There was nothing to keep Marie from plunging into the rolling river below. She could only hope for a miracle now, that she would come out alive somehow despite a twenty-foot drop into five-foot-deep water.
Then there’s anaphora, where you write a number of phrases with the same words at the beginning.
There were still mages out there living in terror of shining steel armor emblazoned with the Sword of Mercy.
There were still mages out there being forced by desperation into the clutches of demons.
There were mages out there being threatened with Tranquility as punishment for their disobedience, and the threats were being made good upon.
Mages who had attempted to flee, but knew nothing of the outside world and were forced to return to their prison out of need for sustenance and shelter.
Mages who only desired to find the families they were torn from.
Mages who only wanted to see the sun.
This kind of repetition effectively slows the pace of your writing and puts the focus on that small scene. That’s where you get your slow pan. The same repetition also has a subtle musicality to it depending on the words you use. That’s where you get the same vibe as you might get from a Gregorian choir.
Damn I made relatable reblog- bait post and writer Tumblr went hard with it. This is legitimately very good advice.
For more neat tricks (aka figures of rhetoric) like epizeuxis and anaphora, read THE ELEMENTS OF ELOQUENCE by Mark Forsyth. It’s both educational and delightful, not to mention overflowing with wry wit. Great book.
Holy shit.
These sound like techniques for making prose have more in common with poetry, or even with music. I just put the book on hold at the library!

Idk if the fandom has changed that much or if y’all changed to acosf urls or what but I feel like I have no idea who people in the fandom are anymore. You’ve either been here 4+ years or you’re brand new and there is no in-between.
Let’s all do a get to know you thing only instead of a/s/l it’s ships and type of content you like/create. What other series and authors does everyone read?
Hahahhahahahaha (?) - remember when there was a special emoji code for a/s/l? Or is that just me.
Url: rayonfrozenwings (same as the start)
Joined SJM fandom in September 2016.
I started with theories, then fan fic, then edits with memes inbetween.
Ships: Elorcan and Nessian otp’s /faves
Have links on my nav page to side blogs and other hyperfixations. 😂
We didn’t have emojis at the time of AOL chat rooms and a/s/l, you lived by the emoticon or you died
I started lurking in late 2016 after Empire of Storms came out and I couldn’t stop crying and listening to my rowaelin playlist. Then I actively joined the fandom early 2017 when people’s takes on Mor kept pissing me off.
I like doing meta and memes and fanfic and headcanons, though my memes have been absent for acosf and I need to do better. I’m on AO3 as abookandacoffee. I have over 500k words there.
Ships: rowaelin, cazriel, and elucien are the main ones atm. Nessian is good. Mor/happiness. Elorcan is good.
I like tons of other stuff and I will share my hyperfixations unabashedly.
Mor protection squad since ages ago.
Url: darling-archeron (I was velaris-starlight in 2018 and a few others before that)
I've been in the fandom since about March 2016, a few months before ACOMAF came out! I didn't post much at first, just mostly lurked, but ACOMAF and Feysand's story basically consumed my heart and soul.
I mainly ship Feysand tbh, but also Elucien and Nessian. And Mor with happiness. Right now I havent been creating as much as I used to, but I write Feysand fic and do some meta and headcanons on the side. Most of my writing is on Ao3, I'm WordsAndWishes.
Outside of acotar I have a rotating list of book hyperfixations that change constantly. A few near the top at the moment include Pride and Prejudice, Cassandra Clare, and An Ember in the Ashes. I have plenty of non bookish interests too!
URL: foxboylucien. I also used to be foxboy-lucien and my-boyo-fenrys. And a very brief run as fucksboy-lucien haha
I joined the SJM fandom in June 2017. I got into acotar just before acowar came out then I read tog before joining the fandom to avoid spoilers
I started posting art at some point in 2018 with acotar coloring book pages and some traditional portraits. I dipped a little bit into writing at one point but we’re not going to talk about that lol. Sometimes I’ll do a little meta, and I used to do a lot of memes too. Now I do digital art!
I ship feysand, nessian, rowaelin, and chaorene (somewhat, I mostly just like Yrene). I’m not sure how I feel about elucien atm because fandom is making it all feel so icky. I don’t really ship elriel that much and I do not ship gwynriel.
I’m on Instagram @ marcellamac_art where I post bookish and fairytale inspired art! And I recently created a side blog @frostcoveredheart to post about non-bookish stuff. Other books I love are The Cruel Prince, Shatter Me, Serpent & Dove, anything V E Schwab, and now I’m really getting into City of Brass!
URL: space-buns-arsinoe. When I first joined fandom tumblr I was abraxos-sniffing-flowers and then between ToD and KoA I changed it to blackbeak-crochan (I think that was the exact URL but I’m not sure). I have changed my URL through different fandoms since though
I joined the SJM fandom back in mid 2016, just before Empire of Storms came out. I wrote a lot of shitty shitty fanfiction back then (some, but not all of which you can still find on my Ao3) and now, most of my SJM fan content is submissions to @stardustsroses
I ship the fuck out of Nessian and Elorcan and refuse to engage in the Elain centred corner of shipping. 99.9% of my own content now is for Kendare Blake’s Three Dark Crowns series which y’all should check out.
Omg thank y’all for including your old urls, the pieces are starting to fall into place 🥰
I was abookandacoffee in 2017, then bookofmirth, I was faeriequeenofthewest for a minute after KoA but bookofmirth is my favorite. Might switch back to faerie just for fun!
. URL: technotzar (I’ve had several, but feyre-cursebreaker was the one I used when the fandom blew up (snatched it up back in 2016 as soon as it was mentioned in ACOMAF because I wanted a cool fandom url)
I am a fandom grandma, as I have been in this fandom since August of 2015. There was no ACOTAR fandom yet, Throne of Glass was kind of big on Booklr (a lot of people had Heir of Fire on their Top Reads lists) but SJM was not nearly as popular. I remember when Feylin vs. Feysand was the big debate, because we didn’t quite realize how problematic Tamlin was. People were also shipping Tamlin with Elain and Nesta with Lucien, it was the wild west.
I’ve always been mostly a lurker. I’ve posted some meta here and there, I think I have a short Nessian fic floating around, and I’ve engaged with others, but mostly I read what other people are writing. Apparently I am just as shy on the internet as I am in real life. I like discussing the entirety of books( style, structure, narrative patterns, character arcs, etc) and the shipping wars and call out posts get very tried.
I seen all the shit in this fandom. Mostly the mass exoduses that happen every time SJM publishes a new ACOTAR book. I think it’s hilarious because it’s usually the ones who were super active in the fandom just before the new book is published. They get butt hurt that their theories are wrong or they don’t play out how they wanted, and feel the need to attack the character of individuals in the fandom and SJM herself. I’m always left wondering what content they are consuming that is so morally superior that in comparison ACOTAR is the most problematic work they’ve ever read. I want to read that book.
URL: house-of-galathynius, I’m pretty sure that’s been my only URL since joining!
I joined the SJM fandom in early 2015 but made a specific ToG Tumblr in March 2016 when Throne of Glass was the main series people talked about. I have been here to watch all the drama unfold and to see people come and go from the fandom. I started out as a lurker, maybe posting a couple of things here and there. And then maybe three years ago I started to write fanfic and posting it on here!
I ship Rowaelin, Feysand, Nessian and Lysaedion... I was an Elriel shipper for a while, but now (completely unrelated to the Azriel chapter) I’m unsure and kind of on the fence about who I ship Elain or Az with, but I’m not a massive fan of gwynriel... I try to stay clear of the discussions for Az and Elain because I don’t know how I feel about them 😬
URL: morganofthewildfire
It’s the same url on ao3 as it is here, and I’ve only been on both sites since august?
I read throne of glass for the first time in 2019 and I’ve been obsessed ever since then, the only otp I one hundred percent never deviate from is Rowaelin! Because they are spectacular ❤️
I joined to read fanfiction originally, but now I write a fair amount too.
I don’t really participate in discussions or theories or anything mostly because I’m a way bigger fan of tog than I am acotar, and tog isn’t coming out with new books, but I’ll participate when it’s about something I have a strong opinion for.
Well, howdy, y’all!
(fuck be less southern be less southern let’s not be a meme today fuck)
URL: imaginedhaven, and it’s been the same thing since I joined tumblr! I’m new here lol
I joined the fandom in summer of 2020, because my sister-in-law and I needed Something To Do and started checking TOG books out of the library.
I joined to cross-post what I put up on my AO3, which is imagined_haven I think? Idk, I’m blogging at work, it’s linked on my page lol. I predominantly read and write.
Ships:
-Rowaelin: read and write! Love them 💗
-Lysaedion: I like them as a side pairing, but I don’t really focus on them much.
-Malide: I don’t really seek it out, but when it falls into my lap I am SOLD.
-Nessian: there are a few select ones I have read and immensely enjoy, but in general I liked ACOTAR a *lot* less than TOG because I struggled to relate to Feyre and Rhys and you spend the first three books so locked into Feyre’s head. I made it through to ACOSF and liked that better, predominantly because I was way more interested in their characters.
While I have Thoughts and Opinions about ACOSF, you won’t see me going off here cause I’m not trying to start some shit lol. I prefer looking over the work as a whole more critically—things I liked, things I didn’t, and whether the story did what it set out to do and how it did or didn’t do that. Since I don’t fall into 100% love or 100% hate, I’m gonna just keep that analysis over here to myself at least until the drama somewhat dies down.
Hi everyone!
Art by Andres Rios
I blinked at what began to shoot between the human boats. What soared over the water, fast as a shooting star. Spearing for Hybern. Red and gold and white—vibrant as molten metal. I could have sworn Hybern’s fleet began to panic as it broke from the lines of the human armada and closed the gap between them. As it spread its wings wide, trailing sparks and embers across the waves, and I realized what—who— now flew at that enemy host. A firebird. Burning as hot and furious as the heart of a forge. Vassa—the lost queen.
I finished the book yesterday and I couldn’t have asked for a better story. I love this book so much, I’ve been waiting for it for years and I haven’t been disappointed. Thank you Sarah J. Mass for this incredible book, for bringing some tears out of my eyes and having the right words to touch me from the depths of my soul. Thank you. I had to draw Nesta and I spent my birthday day finishing this drawing. I hope that one day I too will be able to find my “Ataraxia”.
