“there was not one hour that i did not think about what i did in the desert. how you fired that arrow after twenty-one minutes. you told me twenty, that you’d shoot even if i wasn’t out of range. i was counting; i knew how many it had been. you gave me an extra minute.”
“That’s the dragon.” She traced the shape. “See the head, legs, and tail?” “No.” Ansel chuckled. Celaena nudged her with an elbow and pointed to another grouping of stars. “That’s the swan. The lines on either side are the wings, and the arc is its neck.” “What about that one?” Ansel said. “That’s the stag,” Celaena breathed. “The Lord of the North.” “Why does he get a fancy title? What about the swan and the dragon?” Celaena snorted, but the smile faded when she stared at the familiar constellation. “Because the stag remains constant—no matter the season, he’s always there.” The Assassins Blade.
Ok the constellations... have been bugging me for the longest time.
Dragon - wyvrens? Perhaps.. - Dorians crest is a wyvrens. Does this represent Ardarlan or Dorian? Or will someone connected to a dragon make an appearance...
Stag - terrasen, Aelin.
Swan - ???? Is it the fae? Is it Ashryver? With their bird tendencies or Whitethorns? Descendants of mab? Or Mora?
The stars are always so important. Is it a sign that terrasen will always survive? That they are constant despite the hiccup of Aelin/Celaena's time. That terrasen and the country protected by the stag of the north is going to be ok. Because the stag is always on the sky to look over them.
And the dragon and the swan aren't always in the sky - so they have their time in the spotlight and then fade and then come back. Just like Ardarlan has had its peak and now rifthold castle sits in ruin. The empire is coming to an end.
Or maybe they are just stars.
I want more of Ansel’s story.
Ok so I’ve just read the assassin and the desert. I got vibes that Ansel was really into Celeana. I always thought it was friendship. But now I’m thinking Ansel was into Celeana in a different way.
I could be wrong - but I’m just going to put a few moments below…
On their way back from Xandria, Ansel and Celeana are talking about deep and meaningful stuff about Ansel’s past and then…
“Ansel slowly turned to look at her, her eyes lined with silver, she traced Celeana’s cheekbone, where the bruises had once been. “Where do men find it in themselves to do such monstrous things? How do they find it acceptable?”
“We’ll make them pay for it in the end.” Celeana grasped Ansel’s hand. The girl squeezed back hard. “We’ll see to it that they pay.”
“Yes.” Ansel shifted her gaze back to the stars. “Yes we will.” Ch6
“Ansel’s breathing was ragged. “You could come with me.” She brushed back a strand of Celeanas hair. “The two of us alone could conquer the flatlands- and with lord Bericks troops…” her hand grazed Celeana’s cheek, and Celeana tried not to recoil at the touch and at the words that came from Ansel’s mouth. “I would make you my right hand. We’d take the flatlands back.” Ch11
She calls Celeana a “pretty girl” in passing when Ilias notices her.
Is Ansel flirting with Celeana or just a flirty character?
“She’d never met anyone who smiled and winked so much”.
And I do worry that Ansel’s and Mikhails relationship was forced upon Ansel. She doesn’t seem that happy about it. And says that it started when she was 15, and Celeana makes a comment about how Mikhail is far older and that made her a little queasy. :/ plus she ends up killing him. If she really loved/liked him she would have had a problem killing him. The fact that he came to her room and wouldn’t now because of Celeana also makes me feel sick, like some horrible power thing went on. :/ Mikhail brushes Ansel’s cheek when he give her a letter to take to Xandria, so maybe he does care for her- but perhaps Ansel felt like she had no choice when he pursued her. :/ when Ansel and Celeana are returning from Xandria, they talk about making men pay and Ansel sounds like she is making a personal promise to someone (the ch6 quote above).
In ch8 Ansel talks about how Mikhail will be congratulated for a conquest well made, while she is teased. And then when Celeana asks if she wants to be with Mikhail, Ansel replies with some stuff about him giving her advantages with training etc.
I’m unsure because we only get a snippet of Ansel in the assassin and the desert and then the next time we see her again is in eos. But the face touching seems a bit strange for a friend to do, more like a lovers touch. I can’t wait to see more of her character, I think her back story is going to rip my heart out, but I really want more.
So I was just sharing with the BookClubofMirth my thoughts about Ansel and then it turns out @rayonfrozenwings had the exact same thoughts but expressed more eloquently a year ago 😂. Love ya Renee 😘
For the record, I said:
So I’m reading The Assassin and the Desert, and this time around I’m reading Ansel as very queer-coded. She gives Celaena sidelong glances, she “traces her cheekbone, where the bruises had once been”. I forgot about the massive age gap between her and Mikhail, too. She was 15 when she started dating a guy in his early 20s… it seems like such a relationship of convenience for her. There was a bunch of stuff about her being boy-ish, too. I don’t know how I didn’t pick up on this last time. But I’m definitely headcannoning Ansel as queer from now on.
Yasss! @beka2305 Honestly I love our little group. It's fun finding things and agreeing on stuff because it honestly makes me feel like it's closer to being canon if other people can see it too!
And re-living moments through other people's realisations is so amazing and I love it. 💕💕💕💕💕
also fresh eyes = more evidence :D

Ansel’s birthday is on midsummers eve. She has red hair, reddish brown eyes. She says “ach” like a Scotsman.
that is all.

Ansel of Briarcliff
What if Ansel is a Cochran witch too?
In Empire of Storms, when Manon meets Ansel she says "you might as well be signing an alliance with Erawan, too, if you're working with this ... person."
Does manon suspect she is not a person?
Then... Ansel's response to Manon...
"Ansel's face drained of colour at the iron teeth, the nails. And Aelin remembered the story the assassin-turned-queen had once told her, whispered stop rolling desert sands and beneath a carpet of stars. A childhood friend - eaten alive by an iron teethwitch."
Does she turn white because Manon is a direct threat if she knew Ansel was a Cochran witch? Is the reason she has had so many encounters with witches because she has been evading them and death?

❝If you can learn to endure pain, you can survive anything. Some people learn to embrace it—to love it. Some endure it through drowning it in sorrow, or by making themselves forget. Others turn it into anger. But Ansel let her pain become hate, and let it consume her until she became something else entirely—a person I don’t think she ever wished to be❞
