Brina passed away about a month ago. She was 6 years old.
Five years ago she was thrown into the garbage after spending her year of life inside a cage as a profit and egg machine. She was rescued and, unlike billions of her kin, got the opportunity to actually be a chicken - whatever that means is not up to us to decide - and to live with human carers whose love and respect for her were not dependent on the number of eggs her tired body could give. Every day she enjoyed the sun, fresh air, grass, sand, the space to spread her wings and run around, and spending time with her friends of fur and feather, and her human carers. Unlike most other chickens who are lucky enough to live like that, this would be her home for as long as she needed it, not for as long as she would be able to “pay” for it. The eggs she lay were hers and stayed hers - she got to eat them, to enjoy the flavour and benefit from the nutrients, and the humans ate whatever grew in their garden instead.
