With Twitter quickly dying, I did move to bluesky. I have 3 invite codes and no one to give them to. Anyway, its not like I'm fleeing back to tumblr. I lurk on here everytime I get even a little sad.

I've gone back to school! I am taking a paralegal certification class, and hopefully I'll be able to take the certification exam at the end of this. It is not required, but I feel like having a certificate will put my a head above my competition. I don't plan on going to school to become a lawyer after this. I frankly have no interest in becoming a lawyer. But it is nice to be moving towards something.

Moving forward does come with some downsides. I am still working full time as a shift lead at the bookstore I work at, but because I know there's an end date to this job, I really have lost motivation to do well at work. I still am a better employee than the majority of the booksellers, though. So at least I am still better than some other people. I have been tasked with looking for more professional clothes recently, since my wardrobe for the past two years has been tshirts and jeans. So far I have managed to get three blouses and two pairs of slacks. Luckily I don't need to dress in full business attire for my classes, but I do feel pressure to wear the blouses at the very least, since the majority of my classmates dress that way. I will see about actually taking pictures for this blog, but I only have class once a week, so I don't think I will remember if I'm being honest.

Today I am just going to try to get some requests for letters of recommendation out. The grad program I'm applying to only requires one, but I think I'll send out requests to two of my previous professors just in case.

I will hopefully get those out before 1, then I can work on my statement of purpose. I didn't realize that applying to grad school was so easy. Though, I think it only feels easy because I stressed so much about it and then had a breakdown the last time I tried to apply. I think I'm just overall in a better headspace now than back in 2021.

I did some grad program research today. I am planning on drafting a few different emails to ask previous professors if they would write letters of recommendation for me, as well as asking my store manager sometime in the next week. I'm not really sure if he is someone I can actually get a letter of recommendation from, but I don't really have any other options. I have not worked any corporate jobs, so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We'll see what happens, I guess. I'm also going to draft a few statements of intent. One or two that I can mess around with in the coming months.

Life Update 11.09.2022

This is gonna be a long one since I haven't made an actual blog post in earnest in quite a while. I've been thinking about going back to school recently. I think early next year I might take the LSAT and GRE just to keep my options open. I have been grappling lately with the idea of working to finance my hobbies and interests rather than living to work. But, I still think that I need to return to school first in order to find a job that I can live with while not giving myself fully to.

I got offered my first big girl salaried job and they listed me a $ amount that I think is reasonable for someone of my level & experience, but everyone tells me to always negotiate that first offer!

And I want to but even with my research and snooping I can’t determine a definitive # that makes sense without me seeming delusional to ask for that much more. Realistically, I’d only be asking for like 3K more, but it still feels like a ginormous leap. Any tips? Y’all are the best 💅🏻🤍

Oh my sweet lil dill pickle! Everyone is right: you SHOULD always negotiate for more, even if they only give you a little bit more.

My go-to is typically asking for 10% more, with an understanding that they'll settle for 5% more. That said, if you have an exactly dollar amount of $3k in mind... ask for it! At worst they can say no, at best they'll give you every penny, and most likely they'll give you $1k more. Just ask. You can be super understanding and polite about it. Here's a script:

"Thank you for the offer! I'm really excited to accept, but I was hoping for about $3k more. What can we do to get me closer to my goal?"

They might offer you more vacation time, or other work bennies. Take 'em! Non-monetary compensation is still worth it. But as we always say: they can't say yes if you don't give them the opportunity to say no.

One. Fucking. Page.

There is absolutely no reason why the entirety of your work experience can’t fit onto a single page.

Do not make the mistake of believing a potential employer will pore over your resume with a microscope, carefully weighing your experience and education against their needs for as long as it takes to read the document in full. According to the inestimable Ask a Manager, most people scan a resume in under twenty seconds before making a decision about whether to call the candidate in for an interview.

Brevity is the soul of wit! And it’s the only thing that will ensure the hiring manager is focusing on your most important experience.

Cycle off irrelevant experience

When you’re fresh out of school and trying to get your foot in the door, any and all experience counts. Your time as a sales associate at Target? Résuméed. Life guarding at the local lake? Résuméed. Your college work study? Résuméed. That time you traveled as a back-up singer for the Genesis residency in Las Vegas? Any port in a storm, kid! Slap it on that resume!

But once you’ve been in the workforce for a while, you should cycle irrelevant experience off your resume. Banish it to the trash bins of time like every photo from high school of your braces and bowl cut.

Not all experience is equal, so the idea is that you want to replace less valuable experience with more valuable experience as you progress in your career. Along the same lines, you should be drawing attention to the most relevant, important experience on your resume. This means that once you have a big kid job in your chosen profession, it should take pride of place on your resume… and your education should move to the bottom of the page.

Rinse and repeat as you gain experience. By the time you’re at the mid-levels of your industry, your resume should contain only relevant experience. And for fuck’s sake if you haven’t already removed your college GPA and the job description doesn’t specifically ask for it, no amount of interview poise can save you from looking like an insufferable Hermione Granger circa Chamber of Secrets.

i simultaneously miss being a student and am so so so relieved to no longer operate on due dates. i love my job but hate that i have so little mobility and earning potential in it. im considered an essential worker but i have to take COVID tests every day that i go in this week because my manager might have it. i only make $13 an hour but wouldnt mind working this job forever. i hate customer service, i love seeing people buy new books, excited about the little journey theyre about to embark on. i know exactly what i want, i have absolutely no clue what i want
