Eddie's wide grin slowly dropped to a frown when he saw the lack of enthusiasm on your face, preparing himself for the bad news. "But?" You inhaled deeply before blurting out "Hopper's gonna be there too." Trying not to cringe at Eddie's horrified face, you added desperately "But who cares right?" Even though you both knew the answer very well.
It didn't help that when you stood in front of your front door with your nervous boyfriend, you had the perfect view of the Chief of Police standing tall in your living room, wearing his full uniform. "Shit, shit, shit. This isn't a good idea baby." He whispered, patting his pockets with his free hand as if making sure he wasn't carrying any drugs on him. He carried flowers in the other - a gesture he was sure would win your mother's approval over no matter what. "Eds. Don't worry. Nothing's going to happen."
And for the majority part, that was the truth. Joyce had been more than excited to meet him, engulfing him in a tight hug before gasping at the bright orange bouquet of flowers he held awkwardly, stealing them away to dunk in water. He introduced himself to Will, another easy win for him, before hesitantly approaching the Chief to shake his hand, completely ignoring your older brother who squinted his eyes at your boyfriend threateningly.
Dinner had gone calmly, Eddie making continuous conversation with Joyce and Will, his gaze occasionally shooting between Hopper and Jonathan, expecting one of them to blow up with questions at any moment. Slowly, you started to zone in on the smaller details. One of Eddie's fingers, resting on his fork was twitching, beads of sweat gathering at the back of his neck. He stuttered every now and then when he spoke, which may not seem big, but coming from your overconfident boyfriend? It was huge. He put his fork down between every bite he took, taking his time to chew so he could think of an answer to the questions thrown at him. On the other hand, Hopper sat leant back in his char, chewing slowly, his face completely relaxed, a hint that he had a plan of action laid out in front of him. Jonathan though, looked down at his plate with a frown on his face, playing with his food like a child who was denied candy.
A loud clank of silverware on the table caught your attention, head snapping up at the noise, only to make eye contact with your older brother whose movements mimicked yours, a same look of shock plastered on his face. Hopper cleared his throat, wiping his mouth with a the folded corner of his tissue, his cutlery splayed on his empty plate. One of Eddie's hands sneaked under the table, placing it palm up on your thigh for you to hold. You squeezed his hand with yours, a weak attempt to comfort him. "Well, Eddie. I do have to say you seem pretty different tonight than on all the other occasions I've seen you... I mean you haven't tried running away yet."
Eddie nervously chuckled, a hand coming up to scratch the back of his neck nervously. He stayed silent, trying to come up with something to say. "I don't see how any of that is relevant Hop." You argued, looking to your side to see the look on your mom's face. Joyce seemed undisturbed, barely giving the conversation attention. "The relevance being him carrying drugs on him or not." Eddie choked on his saliva and your eyes widened, jaw going slack. There goes the elephant in the room. Joyce's eyebrows shot up, barely visible underneath her fringe.
"I mean I sure hope you didn't come here, in your girlfriend's family's house with drugs on you. That would be a serious lack of character from your side." Finally, Eddie's shoulders rolled back in confidence, announcing "Well I think that's a serious lack of judgement from your side. I don't see why you'd think Y/N would choose someone to be her boyfriend if she thought he'd bring drugs around people she's so protective of. Especially Will." The two men glared at each other from across the table, and you averted your gaze, bringing your glass of water up to your lips. In your ray of vision you saw your mom smiling widely, trying to cover her grin with a napkin. She caught your eye and wiggled her eyebrows at you before her chest bubbled with a giggle.
At your mom's stifled giggle, your head shoots back in Hopper and Eddie's direction, who are both sporting confused looks on their faces. It's only then you realise Hop has a knife pointed at Eddie from across the table, and your boyfriend has gone pale, a subtle sign of his submission to your fatherly figure. You take the opportunity to push your chair back, which scrapes loudly on the wooden floor, and grab your boyfriend's arm, sprinting out the front door. You wait for Eddie to unlock his van before climbing and leaning over the control panel to wrap your arms over his shoulders to pull him close as you press your lips onto his softer ones, whatever leftover lip gloss you had transferring onto him.
Eddie sighs into the kiss, one of his arms wrapping around your waist, and he pulls away ever so slightly to say "I'm gonna have to unpack what happened in there." You nod, pressing a kiss to his cheek "Yeah, but later. First, let's go to yours so I don't have to drag you to the back of the van." The sound of his laugh engulfs the small space and he turns the ignition, pulling out of the driveway.
