Eternals Film Review: This is NOT your diversity darling
So I saw Marvel’s Eternals yesterday. It’s a week late, but I honestly didn’t think I would see it at all considering I just haven’t been as on top of Marvel products lately, nor have they impressed me much. But a friend wanted to see it for her birthday, and I figured that, worst case scenario, I’d at least get to enjoy some nachos in the movie theater’s comfy new recliners while a mediocre movie played in the background.
I was wrong, in the worst possible way.
I want to start this off by saying that I went in knowing that the Eternals, as a comic book group, has anti indigenous sentiment in it, and by this point I’ve seen all the “Marvel made a gay black man responsible for Hiroshima” memes. I went in thinking I knew the levels of racist it would be, and tried to brace myself accordingly. I grew up a half Mexican half Salvadoran mestiza, by this point I’m used to racism against my ancestors and my people getting swept under the rug. I figured I could sit through those scenes and make it to the end of the film still pretending I had a good time. I was not, in fact, prepared for what I ended up seeing.
Marvel’s Eternals is a racist, sexist, and ableist film hiding behind “diverse casting”. Let me count the ways.

Every day I log onto tumblr and see another terrible opinion about this or that comic book character. Today it's "Damian Wayne pretty much White," tomorrow, who knows?
Thus is my curse for being a fan of comics.
My current theory is that DC fandom is still doing a paper bag test. How else do you explain saying Damian is white because of the way he’s drawn but ignoring Connor Hawke?
I would not be surprised if that was the case, at least subconsciously.
Like I'm not going to argue that Damian, and others, shouldn't be drawn to more clearly depict their racial background. The White washing has *got* to stop. but like.
Guys.
Characters don't stop being non-White just because you don't like it.

today in apparently controversial takes "Clark and Jon Kent don't count towards a diverse group" because they're you know. White.
but according to some people, being an all powerful alien counts, even if no one knows you are said all powerful alien and you live your day to day life as a White man and have never faced racial, religious, or disability based discrimination in your life.
This right here? this is why I don't talk to White boy comics nerds. Especially ones who use terms like "forced diversity."
Tonight is a night of unfollowing and blocking racists and antisemites, apparently.
Just a word of advice: if a member of a minority group tells you you’re being discriminatory against them? maybe consider, I don’t know, listening to them? Instead of doubling down and saying even *more* terrible things.

And for the love of whatever’s up there, ESPECIALLY do not use it to describe your witchcraft. It is playing on the ‘magic gypsy’ trope, and is EXTREMELY insulting.

Absolutely looking forward to the racism/misogynoir the left is gonna throw at Kamala disguised as praxis. She ain’t even in office yet and I’ve already seen the words “demonic biracial c*nt” used to describe her by some shitlib self proclaimed intersectional feminist. We can criticize her politics but at the end of the day, I know the racism is really gonna jump tf out. I don’t necessarily agree with everything she’s said or done but we’re not going to entertain some of you assholes who are frothing at the mouth to call her racial and sexist slurs.
The racism is already jumping out.
I’ve seen more criticism of Kamala Harris in the last 4 months than I ever have of Joe Biden and he has a longer, more prolific, and well documented political history. He’s also....the one who will be president. And yet you can’t criticize him without people coming out in droves to play the lesser of two evils game. But Kamala? You can literally say what you want about Kamala. The only thing that got these people to shut up about her was Obama dropping his book. The racism is apparent.

if a black woman is being vocal about her experiences with and thoughts on combatting racism and your immediate response is to criticize her tone and request that she deliver it in a way that is “less agressive” and makes you more comfortable, then you were never really listening. otherwise you’d understand why we’re so passionate in the first place. periodt.

The ongoing tensions surrounding the First Nations lobster harvest in southwest Nova Scotia erupted Tuesday night when several hundred commercial fishermen and their supporters raided two facilities where Mi'kmaw fishermen were storing their catches.
Indigenous leaders are condemning the actions as racist hate crimes and calling for the RCMP to step up their response.
Commercial fishermen began gathering Tuesday afternoon in Digby County and made their way to a lobster pound in New Edinburgh, where, by nightfall, a van was set ablaze, lobsters were stolen and the facility was damaged.
A similar raid also took place in Middle West Pubnico, in the neighbouring county of Yarmouth, where Mi'kmaw fisherman Jason Marr was forced to barricade himself inside a lobster pound while outside a mob vandalized his vehicle and called for him to relinquish the lobster he had harvested from the waters of St. Marys Bay.
By morning, hundreds of dead lobster were strewn across the pavement outside the pound, and confrontations continued on the ground throughout the day.
The two raids come after weeks of unrest in the province’s southwest, sparked by the launch of a “moderate livelihood” lobster fishery by the Sipekne'katik band outside the federally mandated commercial season.

Coulstring and Marr were critical of the RCMP response on Tuesday night. Coulstring said officers didn’t respond for two hours after being called, and Marr said that as the mob threw rocks through windows and removed crates of lobster, “not one RCMP even tried to stop them.”
Sack also said the RCMP response was insufficient, and he’s waiting for charges to be laid against the instigators of the raids.
The police “are not doing their job well at all at the moment,” Sack said.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Joyce said no arrests had been made as of Wednesday afternoon but that officers did witness criminal activity and investigative teams were being assembled.
Responding to the criticism levelled against the RCMP response on Tuesday, Joyce said he did not think it was fair to say that officers did nothing.
“We were there to keep the peace and keep everyone involved as safe as possible in the situation,” he told CBC News in an interview.
“We live in a country that is so great people can criticize the police for their actions or what they see as their inactions.”
Joyce said officers counted about 200 people at each lobster pound, and while he did not know the identities of everyone involved, he suspected there were some people who participated at both locations.
1. The federally mandated commercial season is just that: federally mandated. Traditionally speaking, our people used to mostly fish for lobster through summer to early fall, but also year round on a smaller scale (for special occasions; social and ceremonial.)
2. These hate crimes have absolutely nothing to do with conservation and “animal activism”. If it was about that, then the attackers wouldn’t have killed all those lobster just to try and stir up false claims against our fishermen. If it was about that, then they’d be attacking the major corporations who haul more than ten times what the Mi’kmaq do. We’ve been fishing in these waters for over 13000 years. We don’t need to be taught conservation by settlers. Settlers could learn a thing or two about Netukulimk.
3. Sgt. Andrew Joyce trying to swing this as a positive that people are complaining about inaction, because “at least we weren’t murdering anyone”, is so disgusting it makes my stomach sick to read. Hey everyone? Just so you know, this is exactly fucking why the argument “well if you dismantle the police who will protect you” means jack fucking shit to POC. They don’t protect us.
