We’re going to hear a lot of stupid bullshit over the next few days/months/years about how Harris/the Democrats failed to win over men, or young people, or uneducated voters, or those worried about the economy, or whatever….but the truth is this: this country hates women and minorities; its citizens understand fuck all about the economy; and the people are incredibly susceptible to outright lies, scams and fascist values

Central Europe is drowning, btw. It's been raining non stop since Thursday, and the temperature drop has been so extreme that there's been snow in the Alps, meaning avalance warnings in the second week of September(!!!). It's storming since Friday, winds up to 100 km/h.
Vienna is about to be under water. Many Austrian, Czech and Polish villages are under water. People have died.
A week ago, it was 33 degrees out and we hid from the sun. Today, it's 8, which feels like 3 with windchill. We had the hottest August ever, the most nights where it didn't cool down below 20 ever. And now we're freezing and drowning.
And in two weeks, Austria will likely elect a far-right climate change denier as its prime minister.
I guess it's too much to hope that people will think twice about electing the climate change denier two weeks after climate change punched us straight in the balls and kicked us while we were down.
Well. Who knows. Maybe sanity will prevail, somehow.
In the meantime, I just hope the water stays out of our cellar and the power stays on. Keep your fingers crossed.

People get so weird about John Oliver. They're so unwilling to accept that yes, this is the furthest left you're allowed to be on a talk show on a corporate network. They're currently mad he did a segment calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, something very few media people have done, something many outlets have discouraged, bc he...also said Hamas is bad, and he titled the segment "Israel-Hamas War". Like Jesus Christ, yes, a lot of what John Oliver says is radical by the standards of corporate media, and I don't know, maybe it's important to have that voice in that widely-accessible space and not hold him up as a failure bc he doesn't provide solutions for everything and isn't perfect.
"All he does is say the problem is capitalism, but doesn't suggest what to do" You realize HBO's other political talk show is hosted by a guy who spends each week raving about how woke college students and pronouns are oppressing him, right? The bar for John Oliver is not set where it is for a dirtbag leftist podcast; that's the bar. Why does he have to outline the revolution
This, and also, for what it's worth, he does suggest solutions. Almost all of his pieces have a "what could we do to make this sucks less" section. He also puts his money where his mouth is and buys up medical debt to forgive it, for example.
Yes, he's not perfect. But I firmly believe he's doing his honest best to be a force of good in this world while being hilarious, and I think criticising a comedian for not saving the world might overestimate his influence just a tiny bit.
