Generations

Here’s a couple more shots from Dalhart, Texas—two aging EMD units, of the first and second generations, built in La Grange, Illinois. The locomotives rest along the former Colorado & Southern Railway.

Burlington Northern 2899 was built as a GP35 in 1965 while BNSF 1609 is an SD40-2 from 1979.

The ATSF Just West of Chicago

In these images we first see some power at rest—including a splendid FP45, number 5947, tied up to a couple of SD45s. The second image depicts a hot westbound job led by SD40-2 number 5031. It’s interesting to note that there is another “cowl” unit tucked in behind the lead locomotive in the action shot.

The Southern Way

Here we see a Southern Railway SD40-2 in charge of a westbound train at MP 236, near Marengo, Indiana. This is Southern’s line between Louisville and St. Louis.

The locomotive in the lead is scarcely one year old when this image was made; the Southern Railway had a penchant for running its locomotives long-hood forward.
