City as Metaphor
Two diptychs from my project, City as Metaphor, will be on display in an exhibit next month…
Society for Photographic Education Members Exhibition: New Realities Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville March 4th through the 27th 2024
The juror is Eric Lutz, Curator at the Saint Louis Art Museum. The exhibition is in conjunction with SPE’s national conference in St. Louis which happens March 21st through the 23rd.
These Brooklyn views were made forty years apart: first in 1981 (when I was a photography student at Pratt Institute) and then in 2021. The first diptych was taken at 511 Myrtle Avenue while the second was made at 197 Adelphi Street.
All images by Richard Koenig.

Lafayette Houses
This view shows the southeast corner of the Pratt Institute campus in Brooklyn along with the Lafayette Houses and NYPD's 88th Precinct just beyond. That wonderful old building (from 1890) once housed the 4th precinct; it stands at the corner of Dekalb and Classon Avenues. For more on the structure, one can go here.

This image was made at 555 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn. We are looking north across Myrtle. This block lies between Emerson Place and Classon Avenue in the Clinton Hill area, near Pratt Institute.

Myrtle and Classon, Brooklyn
Here’s what the corner of Myrtle and Classon Avenues looked like forty years ago. A gas station, albeit a Citgo, remains there today.

Classon Avenue, Brooklyn
Here are three young gentlemen, a trio if you will, taking a break from their work to pose for a photographer. I believe the location was Classon Avenue between Myrtle and Willoughby Avenues.

View from the Dorm
And lastly, here are two images (posted before) taken from my dorm while studying at Pratt Institute.

Life in the Dorm
Just a few pictures take from our dorm balcony. This mundane sequence happened at the Willoughby dorm, Pratt Institute.

Myrtle Avenue, Five Hundred Block
It must be late in the afternoon as we look, once again, at the five hundred block of Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn. This is between Pratt Institute and the Navy Yard.

Myrtle Avenue: Farmacia, General View
Here’s another shot taken at 519 Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. We are adjacent to the Clinton Hill neighborhood—between Pratt Institute and the Navy Yard here.

The Changing Face of Brooklyn
Here are two images made nearly forty years apart: storefronts along Myrtle Avenue near Hall Street. This is close to the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, not far from Pratt Institute.
