A Florida man was murdered early Sunday morning defending his gay friends from a drunk homophobe who followed them out of the restaurant where they were eating.

Multiple witnesses reported that the killer came after the group and shouted, “If we were in my country I’d kill all of you like rats. I hate you damned gays. I’m going to kill you all here.”

The victim, 22-year-old Juan Javier Cruz , was shot dead with a handgun Mena pulled from his pocket after defending his friends.

This is not right that people have to die just because homophobia is flourishing in America.

RIP  Juan Javier Cruz, you are a hero.

Rest in power

May his memory be a blessing.

When people say “It’s 2018, nobody cares if you’re gay or not.” They don’t even know

Last week, the United States was one of 13 countries from the United Nations Human Rights Council that voted against a measure condemning the use of the death penalty to punish LGBTQ people. Against. Really.

The resolution asks countries where the death penalty is legal not to apply it in a way that discriminates against certain groups of people, or punishes “specific forms of conduct such as apostasy, blasphemy, adultery, and consensual same-sex relations.”

The measure thankfully still passed with the votes of 27 countries. The nations that voted not to pass it were Botswana, Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, China, India, Iraq, Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

LGBTQ and human rights advocates condemned the U.S. for voting against the resolution. A statement from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) called U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and the Trump administration’s failure to champion the resolution “beyond disgraceful”:
Ambassador Haley has failed the LGBTQ community by not standing up against the barbaric use of the death penalty to punish individuals in same-sex relationships,” said Ty Cobb, director of HRC Global. “While the U.N. Human Rights Council took this crucially important step, the Trump/Pence administration failed to show leadership on the world stage by not championing this critical measure. This administration’s blatant disregard for human rights and LGBTQ lives around the world is beyond disgraceful.”
Responding to such criticisms, U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said during a 3 October press briefing that the much of the reporting on the United States’ position on the resolution had been misleading, and that despite appearances the U.S. “unequivocally condemns” the application of the death penalty to homosexuality, adultery, and religious offenses:
As our representative to the Human Rights Council said last Friday, the United States is disappointed to have voted against that resolution. We voted against that resolution because of broader concerns with the resolution’s approach in condemning the death penalty in all circumstances, and it called for the abolition of the death penalty altogether. We had hoped for a balanced and inclusive resolution that would better reflect the positions of states that continue to apply the death penalty lawfully, as the United States does. The United States unequivocally condemns the application of the death penalty for conduct such as homosexuality, blasphemy, adultery, and apostasy. We do not consider such conduct appropriate for criminalization.

Have we made America great yet? Is this what that looks like?

For the 14th time this year, we are saying the name of a transgender person of color who was lost to senseless violence. Ava Le’Ray Barrin, who was only 17, died in Athens, Georgia in an altercation with someone she knew. She died from a gunshot wound, and her killer was arrested.

A candlelight memorial service for Barrin was held in Athens at 7:00 PM EDT Monday evening at the complex, and her funeral arrangements are still pending. Ava Le’Ray Barrin is not only the 14th trans person killed this year, she is now the youngest trans woman to die in the US, at age 17.  All 14 trans women murdered in the US this year have been trans women of color, with 12 of the 14 being Black. One person, Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow, was Native American, and we recently lost our first Latina in Josie Berrios.

17 years old. She was a child. Rest in peace and power, Ava.

The Muslim community is mourning the passing of Nabra, a 17 year old young woman from Sterling, VA. Nabra was beaten to death with a baseball bat and left in a pond after going missing while walking to a mosque with her friends. Hate crime against Muslim Americans is at its highest point with more than 67% increase since 2016. Nabra is another example of the escalating violence towards Muslims Americans. Activists gathered at Union Square to hold a vigil for Nabra and her family and to stand against violence against Muslim Americans.

Nabra, 17 years old, was walking to a mosque before she was murdered… Police think that she was most likely beaten to death with a bat, and I think that the motive behind this is Islamophobia. This isn’t getting enough media attention, but the least when can do is hope that the sick fuck who did this gets life in prison. #JusticeForNabra

The mosque Nabra went to started a fund for her grieving family. Any help given to her would be appreciated. Thank you.

no one believes me when i say being black, female, and muslim is the most dangerous combination in the us

no community defends us

the muslim community acts like black muslims dont exist

the black community completely ignores black muslims DESPITE people like malcolm x and muhammad ali who fought for our rights

dont get me started on how modern feminism ignores race and tries to “free” us from religion

im tired of black muslims only being defended and cared for by other black muslims yall

Columbus, Ohio police are investigating the death of 28-year-old Rae'Lynn Thomas, who was shot and killed by her mother’s ex-boyfriend. Thomas’ mother, Renee Thomas, shared her daughter’s final words with local news:

“Mom, please please don’t leave me. Mom, I’m dying,” she said. “Mom, I love you. Tell my sisters and my brother I love them. Tell my family I love them. Mom, I’m dying, I’m dying, please don’t leave me.”

According to Renee Thomas, her ex James Allen Byrd was transphobic and often called Rae'Lynn “the devil.” Renee Thomas says Byrd repeated the word before shooting Rae'Lynn in their Columbus home. Read more.

I know we’re all going through a lot after the Pulse shooting, but please don’t forget that black trans feminine people are living through this every single day.

Goddess Diamond’s family has set up a burial assistance fundraiser: https://www.gofundme.com/28b4atw

A former Georgia sheriff’s deputy, convicted for using a stun gun on a restrained detainee who later died alone in his cell, was sentenced on Friday to one month in jail and three years’ probation.
His conviction for cruelty of an inmate carried jail time of up to three years. But significantly shorter jail time was not the only way Chatham County superior court judge James Bass issued a more lenient sentence: he also allowed the former deputy to serve his time on the weekends.

Matthew Ajibade was found dead on January 1 this year. He was strapped to a restraining chair inside an isolation cell at the jail. The 21 year old guy was  The Savannah College of Art and Design student. Read more here.

But let’s concentrate on the cop who tasered the poor man to death and only got 1 month in jail. Besides, he’s allowed to serve his time on the weekends. Host of The Young Turks Cenk Uygur speaks the absolute truth when he suggests we try and reverse the cases. Any black person who’d try to even look (let alone taser) in a cop’s direction, would get killed. So why is that cops kill people and get 1 month in jail? That’s outrageous!

Good Morning AmeriKKKa (9/28/15): The world woke up to George Zimmerman trending on Twitter again. Why, you may ask– is he finally dead?! Nope. That little shit just decided to brag about killing Trayvon Martin again. Twitter has since removed the image, but refuses to ban Zimmerman, even as he flaunts his violent and deadly racism. #staywoke #farfromover

The eyewitness who recorded the cellphone video that put a South Carolina police officer in jail on a murder charge just said that he is afraid for his life. Feidin Santana walks with security who is watching out for him right now – something he is fairly low key about – but in his first interview Wednesday, he said that even when he first told officers on the scene that he recorded the incident, he had the impression that he would be killed if he waited around.
“I’ve seen that movie before” he said last night in an interview with NBC News.
So when the officers told him to “wait right here” and they left to get other law enforcement officers, he took off and leaked the video through less formal channels.
Now, he says that he still believes his life is threatened by members of the police department. He walked the same route to work every day – that’s when he saw and recorded the incident which led to the fatal shooting of Walter Scott. But now that has all changed. He explained in interviews yesterday that now he varies his route to work and does not go that same way any longer, in order to avoid assassination.
Santana told NBC News that “I felt that my life, with this information, might be in danger.”
Once he left the scene after officers told him to stay put, he worried that perhaps he should just delete the footage – as releasing it would put him in police crosshairs.
But after hearing the lies the police department announced about the incident, he decided he could not – in good conscience – remain silent.
“What if there was no video? What if there was no witness, or ‘hero’ as I call him, to come forward?” the Scott family’s lawyer, L. Chris Stewart, said to The Associated Press. “We didn’t know he existed. He came out the blue.”
