This argument...
The whole, “eugh, I don’t want to have to explain homosexuality to my children!” I hate it, yes. I hate it for so many reasons; of course there’s the regular list like “there’s nothing wrong with homosexuality” and “children are actually seriously fine with it calm down” and “why should people have to suffer because you don’t want to do your parenting duties,” but I have a few more, the biggest one being… If you’re worried about protecting your children, and not wanting to have to explain “disgusting” things to them, why in the world is it homosexuality that you’re anxious about? You know what I don’t want to have to explain to my children? I don’t want to have to explain that their favourite teacher got fired because of something private my kid wasn’t aware of that didn’t affect his ability to do his job in the slightest. I don’t want to have to explain that their best friend’s parents can’t really get married in a so-called secular country because it’s against a few people’s interpretation of the Christian Bible and/or the word “marriage.” I don’t want to have to explain that our family friend can’t walk anymore because some people in a bar overheard him talking about his boyfriend and decided that the proper response to that was to take him to an alley out back and beat him with blunt objects. I don’t want to have to explain that their cousin hanged herself because every day she was belittled, cruelly treated, called a “fag” and a “dyke,” and told she was going to hell, simply because she asked a girl to the school dance. And I never want my kids to have to hear these explanations and realize that all these things might happen to them. But, oh, what’s that? You don’t want to explain something as simple as “not all romantic love is between one man and one woman”? Wow, good call! I guess homosexuality is harder to explain than discrimination, unequal rights, violence, prejudice, suicide—not to mention a million other things in this world that aren’t related to homosexuality that would be much more disturbing than mentioning “some people like others of a different gender” no matter what. Even if you think for some reason that homosexuality is wrong, this should not be an argument you use. Period.
