An isle of dreams.
Author of How to Have an Adventure in Northern Japan, Raffael Coronelli, returns to Japan on two southward journeys — first circling the subtropical island of Kyushu, then exploring its secretive corners, forging lasting relationships with the people who make it one of the most culturally exhilarating places on Earth. From big metropolitan Fukuoka, to the natural beauty of Miyazaki, to the corners of Oita Prefecture and the depths of Beppu’s electric nightlife, experience an adventure through history, cuisine, and the universal power of friendship and love on the adventure of a lifetime in Kyushu.

The new epic from the creator of Daikaiju Yuki is out now.

KYUSHU — my defining work this year, the narrative of my experiences across two in-depth visits to Southern Japan, is out now. This has been in the works in one way or another since the end of my Northern Japan adventure, and this book is a step up from that one in every way. This is my biggest and most personal piece of writing yet, about a place I fell in love with and the people who brought me back.

I'm in the final editing stages of the biggest and most personal work I've ever done, the book about my two visits to Kyushu this year — the long-time-coming, bizarro version of my Northern Japan adventure that has turned out to be so much more than that. Announcement in the coming weeks.

Wizard School Mysteries Book 3: Wicked Witchcraft is officially published! Get your copy now!

Happy friday the 13th, friends! To celebrate this spooky day, and prepare for the spookiest of all holidays, Halloween, why not grab a copy of Wizard School Mysteries Book 3: Wicked Witchcraft, now available in paperback and ebook form at Amazon.com?

Here's the synopsis, which will show why this book is such a good pick for this spooky autumn season:

After a summer spent reconnecting with their families and loved ones, the Meddlesome Youths have returned to the Academy of Applied Arcana and Magic for their sophomore year of their spell-casting education, each hoping that this semester will be quieter than the last school year was - or at least involve less death and kidnapping. But how could it be at a school that welcomes in the supernatural? With vampire teachers, haunted classrooms, a masked maniac prowling the woods, and a river from the Underworld itself lying beneath campus, the deck is stacked against a peaceful school year. Add to it the fact that one of their number, Gretchen Pappenheimer, is trapped in an internship that's literally from Hell, and our young sleuths are fated for a fall semester they'll never forget - provided they can survive it! The spookiest entry yet in the Wizard School Mysteries series, Wicked Witchcraft puts our meddlesome youths up against their most deadly foes yet in an adventure that takes them to Hell and back. A perfect adventure to read on Samhain or Freyasday the 13th!

And if you haven't read the previous entries of the Wizard School Mysteries series, Book 1: The Meddlesome Youths and Book 2: Tournament of Death, well, I think if you bought them now you'd have plenty of time to read them both and still have time to read book 3 as a wonderful cap for your Halloween season!

So what are you waiting for? It's never been a better time to dive into the Wizard School Mysteries series!

I’ve been extremely busy with my own writing, but I’ve been making a point to look at this one because this series is just so enjoyable. If you liked the previous ones, this one delivers a continuation that’s been worth the wait — and with the level of genre drippings you’d expect from this particular writer injecting more horror into the mix. Once again, this series understands the elements in use and uses them to have something to say.

If you don't want to have to give the demon lord Jeff Bezos your hard-earned money, don't fret! As I have with previous books, I will order some author copies (which amazon only charges me for the cost of producing them, taking no profit for itself) and mail them to you for the low low cost of the book's normal price ($15) plus whatever shipping ends up being (which, as of a year and a half ago, averaged to about $7.50 per person, depending on where you live in relation to Michigan). Just shoot me a DM and we'll work out the details!

Oh, and those copies I mail out will of course be autographed!

Three weeks. Ten cities and towns from Hokkaido to Tokyo. Part memoir, part guide with dynamic photographs and all the information you’d need to do it yourself — full of wild stories, incredible locales, and all the people along the way.

Here’s a look back at my first Japan book from four years ago. My second one, far bigger and more experienced, will be out at this year’s end.

That’s great to hear! It’s so wild that it’s been out for so long and is still finding new people who enjoy it. I appreciate that a lot.

Absolutely gorgeous new art. Love this look for her 💗

The way the teeth loom in the background give her a sense of threat juxtaposed with the sexiness, which I always felt was an important aspect of the character.

I like having artworks like this out there for a lot of reasons, but one is that I feel like it gives the character a kind of shorthand iconography. I always wanted Yuki to be like a “classic monster” who just appears perennially and is recognizable in whatever format.

However the novels themselves hold up, I think I created something that still stands as pretty unique in the landscape of kaiju media. These characters have now taken on life beyond the original medium thanks to the enthusiasm of people who took interest in them. As a creator, you can’t really ask for more than that.

Yuki lives!

The world of kaiju storytelling is much richer for having Yuki and her costars in it.

My characters Yuki & Yamanra are back in a hot new scene drawn by Revtilian, based on an idea I had — an alternate canon where they went further with their relationship than in Yuki vs. Fleshworld

I love these characters, so it’s fun to revisit them in an alternate scenario where they get to be a little bit happier with each other. Like it says, this is an alternate canon!

I’ve now been able to give my two favorite villains of my DKY series another go-around — Supayra got resurrected in the main canon, and Yamanra got to do… this

Speaking of both of those villains getting to come back and hang out with the protagonist in one way or another, I don’t think this AU is as messed up as what happened in Exorcism. Yuki and Yamanra really only needed slightly different character arcs for this to happen.
