Reflection via @thepassionists Betrayal April 16, 2019 Suppose you were an unseen guest at the Last Supper. There had to be tension in the air. What did Jesus mean by saying one of them would betray him? How could he think such a thing? These were his loyal friends. Peter missed the hint when Jesus gave a piece of bread to Judas. When Judas left the table they thought Jesus sent him out on business. What was Jesus talking about, being glorified? and when he told them they could not go with him to where he was going? Peter must have been stunned when Jesus cut short his boasting by predicting his denial. What’s going on here? There is in each of us the possibility of a Judas; and of a Peter. For all our protestations of loyalty ’I will lay down my life for you,’ Peter failed when put to the test. Whatever his motivation Judas was determined to strike a deal with the enemies of Jesus. Can we think on this? Could we ever be a Peter or a Judas to another of our friends or relations? How would we treat a friend who turned out to be a Peter or a Judas to us? Fr. Memorial of Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr Reflection for January 21, 2019 via @thepassionists I read a short quote from Pope Francis not long ago that might help us reflect on our readings today, “Sing to the Lord a new song. (Psalm 95:1) What is this new song? It does not consist of words, it is not a melody, it is the song of your life, it is allowing our life to be identified with that of Jesus, it is sharing his sentiments, his thoughts, his actions. And the life of Jesus is a life for others. It is a life of service.” Now read this quote from Pope Francis alongside our Gospel today from Mark, (Mark 2:18-22), in which Jesus says, “no one pours new wine into old wine skins…. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.” So, if we are singing a new song it cannot be the same old life that sings. It has got to be a new life, a new way of looking at the world. It has got to be a new way of looking at ourselves and others. Often, we are afraid of new, afraid of change, afraid of difference yet Jesus and Pope Francis and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. tell us not to be afraid, but to pour, to sing and to dream anew. Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Happy Monday – and Happy New Wine, New Song and New Dream – Everyone! God's marvelous deeds! Reflection for January 18, 2019 via @thepassionists Do not forget the works of the Lord. From generation to generation God’s marvelous deeds and providence has been experienced. From parents to their children we have seen and we have heard of the goodness of the Lord. The glorious deeds of our God have been seen and proclaimed from generation to generation. Today our Gospel passage from St. Mark is very telling of who Jesus is and why He is here. The one who comes with authority over unclean spirits and demons has clearly set the tone: He is here to combat evil and sin. At the very beginning of Mark, Jesus has set the stage, a stage that will unfold through his public ministry. The prophet who has arisen in their mist will not only cure the paralytic, but goes to heights of blasphemy and arrogance in doing what is only possible for God to do: FORGIVE SINS. And in almost a playful way, like two kids on a playground, it is boldly announced in advance. I will make this basketball shoot from half court and both eyes will be closed. All the children at the playground knew the shoot could not be made and especially by this new kid in town. Jesus knowing their thoughts, tell the paralytic “your sins are forgiven” and to the crowd, which is easier to say your sins are forgiven or standup pick up your mat and walk. There should have been a drum roll, or a spot light on him, but no: a clear command to get up with his mat and to go home. Like our grandparents and parents before us, we are reminded today and always not to forget the works of the Lord. This is our generation’s turn to pass on the marvels of our God, who comes in power and authority to heal the sick and to combat the forces of Evil and release those held in the bondage of Sin. We like the people of Capernaum are amazed at what we have seen and heard and now it is our turn to Glorify God. Amen. Reflection for January 9, 2019 via @thepassionists Love Over Fear Pope Francis calls us to holiness. One sign of holiness, he says, is “boldness and passion”. Pope Francis continues: “Boldness is the impulse to leave a mark in this world. To allow us to do this, Jesus himself comes and tells us once more, serenely yet firmly: ‘Do not be afraid’”. Fear can paralyze us. It did not paralyze Mary. Our Lady is a beautiful example of “perfect love casts out fear”. Her visit to Elisabeth meant a ninety mile journey. Some, in her condition, would have second thoughts. But we are told: Mary “went in haste”. Her love, her joy, her faith inspired her. Many ordinary people, not only saints, show us what “love casts out fear” really means. One such person is a Passionist by the name of Fr. Rick. He has spent over thirty years of his priesthood in Haiti. Very often that country is unsettled either because of violence or poverty or storms. It does not deter him He ministers to the people not only as a priest but also as a doctor. Fr. Rick has established a hospital as well as an orphanage. As He wrote: “I spend the lion’s share of my time in front line work”. Some might fear what the future will bring. But for Fr. Rick “love casts out fear”. Pope Francis once wrote: “How often we are tempted to stay close to shore. The Lord calls us to put out into the deep and let down our nets. Boldness and apostolic courage are an essential part of mission”. Cardinal Henry Newman said of himself: “God has created me to do him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I have my mission. I shall do good. I shall do his work”. Fr. Rick has that apostolic courage, as did Cardinal Newman. Both followed the example of Mary. Fear did not hold them back “Love casts out fear”. Fr. GOD'S LOVE FOR US Reflection for April 11, 2018 via @thepassionists I’m really not a sports fan. If I spend 2 hours a year watching sports on TV that’s a lot. But I have noticed at many sporting events people holding up placards that read John 3:16. Today’s Gospel selection begins with John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.” I suppose those placards were reminding the fans that winning the game wasn’t everything – but God’s love IS EVERYTHING. As a young man, I sang in our Church Choir. I recall being quite excited when the Choir Director announced that we were going to sing in the Vatican Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. We were going to sing only one motet and we practiced twice a week for about two months. The motet that was chosen was a musical setting of John 3:16. It was a beautiful piece and I can still hear it in my mind’s ear 54 years later. That was long before I entered the Passionist Community. I believe there are two reasons for my fond memory of that occasion. The first reason was the beauty of the polyphonic setting. As I recall, it was an almost ethereal, haunting sound. And after just a little searching, I found that the composer was John Stainer. The second reason was the message itself: God so Loved the World; God, the Supreme Being; God, the Creator of all; God suffering in His Son Jesus F O R U S. I’d like to suggest that before this day is over and done, each of us try to take a few moments to reflect on that reality – the wonder of it – the enormity of it – the Good News that it is. And let us pray that we shall never forget those words of Jesus and that even in moments of darkness we might not falter in our faith in and conviction of GOD’S LOVE FOR US. …. Reflection for April 2, 2018 via @thepassionists Monday of the Octave of Easter In a very “masculine,” driven culture, and a patriarchal Church, it is good to be reminded of the gentle strength and deep interior faith of the feminine. This is precisely what we find in today’s Gospel reading, another version of the Easter Gospel. The first disciples to whom the Risen Jesus appears are women. The Apostles, the men, are all fearfully gathered in the upper room. This Gospel is an invitation to all of us, men and women, to develop those “feminine” qualities of love, mercy, humility and hiddenness as well as a maternal fearlessness and strength. These qualities enabled the women in our Gospel to brave a trip to the tomb of Jesus, and to have their eyes opened to encounter the Risen Lord. Let’s sit quietly today for a little while and ask God our Mother to gift us with a “feminine” heart.
