Blessed Bernardo Maria di Gesù (7 November 1831 – 9 December 1911), born as Cesare Silvestrelli, was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and a professed member from the Passionists. He entered the novitiate for a brief period under a different religious name though ill health forced him to leave but did not hinder him from still training and living alongside the Passionists. He re-entered the order after his ordination and went on to hold several positions of leadership within his own order; he was even likened to Saint Paul of the Cross while Pope Leo XIII and Pope Pius X held him in high esteem. Grimoaldo of the Purification (4 May 1883 – 18 November 1902) – born Ferdinando Santamaria – was an Italian Roman Catholic clerical student from the Passionists. He had expressed his inclinations towards the religious life from his childhood when he served as an altar server and was exposed to the Passionist charism; but he did not join until 1899 once his father approved of his dream and he was professed in 1900. He then continued his studies – though this time for the priesthood – but died from meningitis before he could achieve this dream. Santamaria's reputation for holiness was well-noted in his hometown during his life and it increased after his death while devotion to him soared in Rochester once his widowed mother and sister immigrated there. They deceive themselves who think they will be saved because they engage in some pious practice or good works, though, at the same time, they set their affections on creatures, worldly amusements and pleasant pastimes. Jesus Christ has said: “The road to heaven is narrow”; and He adds that anyone who would follow Him must deny himself, and take up his cross daily; “qui vult venire post me, abneget semetipsum, tollat crucem suam quotidie et sequatur me.” I like to think that for you there are neither theatres, balls, banquets,or such like things, and that you are prudent enough to hold aloof from these dangers even though you live in the world. If it were otherwise, ah, dear Michael (believe a brother who speaks to you from his inmost heart, and who desires only one thing, to see you happy here and hereafter), be sure that it is very dangerous to frequent such places without a real necessity, and that it is the height of presumption to hope for the grace to avoid sin while one remains in the occasions of it. Dear Michael, would you have someone to love? Be it so, by all means. But whom shall you love? Mary! What creature is more beautiful, more lovable, more powerful? I do not know of a better one, whether on account of the thirty or thirty-one meditations that you can re-read each month, or on account of the examples and pious practices it recommends. Not having this book, I cannot send it to you, but I do not think there will be any difficulty in finding it at the Seminary, or the Oratory of St. Philip Neri. Go and ask for it and you will do me a great favor. Please accept this little book that my excellent Superior has given me. Take this souvenir as a pledge of my love for you.
