Reflection for March 23, 2018 via @thepassionists Recognizing God In today’s gospel, the Jews threaten to stone Jesus for blasphemy. They cannot accept that the works that Jesus performs are God’s works because it does not fit into their imagined image and understanding of God. Reading this gospel caused me to wonder how often God presents in my daily life and how often I miss this opportunity because of the limits of what and where I imagine God to be. I wonder how often God works through the unexpected people and places in my life but I am too blinded, too stubborn, too narrow-minded to realize that God is trying to speak to me. Like the Jews, I am quick to judge or pounce when I disagree or something makes me uncomfortable rather than seeking to mindfully discern where God might be calling me. This Lent offers us all an opportunity to pause and open our hearts and be filled with wonder by the many forms and places that God chooses to present Himself in our lives and in our world. Have Mercy on Us Reflection for February 21, 2018 via @thepassionists The opening words of today’s Responsorial Psalm are from Psalm 51, a favorite of mine. In fact, in the last few years, I have prayed the first few verses whenever I participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I find it more reflective of what I feel and need; I use it as my Act of Contrition. The First Reading from The Book of Jonah presents us with the story of the conversion of the city of Nineveh. It is the story of Jonah announcing that God intended to punish the citizens of Nineveh for their sinful ways and how they believed Jonah’s words. The people proclaimed a fast and donned sackcloth. When the King of Nineveh heard this, he too put on sackcloth, sat in the ashes and decreed that everyone was to fast, put on sackcloth and turn from violence. He even proclaimed that the beasts were to fast!! All this in the hope that God would not carry out his plan to destroy the city and its inhabitants. And when God saw that the people turned from evil, God did not carry out His plan. A week ago today, Christians throughout the world observed Ash Wednesday. Many went to their Churches to be marked with ashes. The minister who applied the ashes said, ‘Turn away from sin and believe the Good News’ or ‘Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.’ I guess one could say that it is a contemporary application of the Jonah/Nineveh story. During this Season of Lent, the Church urges us to fast, to pray and to make efforts to turn away from our sinful ways, whatever they may be. May we, like the people of Nineveh, heed the call to conversion and acknowledge our need for God’s mercy. I’d like to suggest that each day during Lent we pray: Have mercy on us, God in your kindness; in your compassion blot out our offenses. Thoroughly wash us of our guilt and cleanse us of our sins. ….. Thy Will Be Done Reflection for February 13, 2018 via @thepassionists Today people around the world are celebrating Mardi gras, supposedly a ‘blow out’ before Ash Wednesday and the restrictions of our Lenten season. In Passionist Communities around the world we celebrate the Mass of the Agony in the Garden on this Tuesday. Mathew tells us that Jesus took his close friends Peter, James and John to a place they knew well, the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus wanted to spend time in prayer and he wanted the support of these friends. Mathew tells us that Jesus became grieved even unto death and agitated. He knew he was in trouble with the religious authorities. Cleansing the Temple was the last straw. Not knowing what tomorrow would bring he prayed for the strength to face whatever was to be. Peter, James and John avoided the tension by sleeping. They didn’t say, ‘Lord it is good for us to be here,’ like they said on the mount of the Transfiguration. Jesus’ whole prayer is summed up in the simple words, ‘Father if it is possible let this chalice pass me by, (then the words of total surrender) ‘not my will but your will be done.” We echo those words every time we say the Our Father; ‘Thy will be done.’ We can pray for ourselves and for each other that we say them with the same conviction Jesus said them that fatal night.
