this one's mostly me being fixated and coming up with ideas abt generational changes in ghouls (you'll see)

there are a lot of differences between Pit-born Ghouls and Topside-born Ghouls
Pit-borns are significantly bigger, capable of hitting up to 8 feet tall
their horns tend to grow to be thicker/longer/curlier and the shapes differ between elements
sometimes their fingers/tails are tinted a different color than the rest of their bodies, also corresponding with their elements (earth ghouls tend to have brown/black coloring, water ghouls have navy, air ghouls have white/light blue, etc.)
Pit-borns have varying levels of fur, often on different parts of their body. it tends to be clustered at pulse points on those with light amounts of fur, like around the neck, around the wrists and up the underside of the arm.
Topside-borns get smaller and more human-like with each generation
The Ministry actually spends a good amount on Ghoul breeding, aiming to try and make Ghouls palatable to the more skittish Siblings of Sin
Ministry-bred Ghouls wind up either fully furry or bare skin with an even skin tone
Topside-born Ghouls might start growing larger horns, but they'll eventually break off, replacing with the little devil-like horns like the ones on the Copia-era Ghouls's helmets
Topside vs. Pit-born doesn't affect certain things like iris color/shape variations, markings like birthmarks or freckles, or hair color and texture
they also have temperment differences, as Pit-born Ghouls are often more aggressive due to being used to the dark chaos of the Pit
Pit-born Ghouls have been noted as having superiority complexes over their younger Topside-born relatives, often calling them "soft" or "disgraceful"

all my Ghost headcanons (i mean the band)

most are abt earth ghouls tbh

earth ghouls have hella strong tails
they have spade-shaped tips that they use for digging and breaking rock a-la tree roots cracking nyc sidewalks
their horns grow spiral-y and have sharp tips that are meant for tree sap tapping
the horns cleave apart as easily as slate though so they'll dig up precious metals and have fire ghouls fashion it into pretty armor to cover intact horns or prosthetic horns (if they can find strong enough metal)
they can actually be really aggro, especially those fresh from the Pit, and like to have horn fights like goats
having whole horns is actually kind of rare and those who have them are heralded like olympians
they have an innate knowlege of flora and fauna
they CAN and WILL use deadly lookalikes of edible plants to harm those who hurt their packs

as for ghouls in general

when a ghoul is fished from the Pit their body shifts to look like the most recently dead human
the Pit is actually a giant dark pool of water and each type of ghoul reacts differently when summoned into the human world
fire ghouls boil the water around them before becoming concious and come sprinting out of there once they wake up
water ghouls have to be coaxed out bc they really don't wanna stop swimming
earth ghouls sink like stones and have to literally be hauled up by a rope
air ghouls create a whirlpool with them at the center
aether/light ghouls turn the water to look more like a liquid galaxy than anything
