Duolingo coming in with that stealth HHD programming
duolingo manifesting this for me

hello! do you have any recs for a complete beginner trying to learn the alephbet? like, COMPLETELY from scratch 🥴💀 (i am listening to the aleph bet song on loop lol)
okay actually, it goes FAST but the aleph bet song (hoshanah) from victoria hanna is pretty great. it goes through the aleph bet and THEN goes through how the aleph bet sounds with all of the vowels applied. Other than that, duolingo's resources on the aleph bet are actually pretty helpful. I'm not a big fan of duolingo's hebrew program overall, i think it's not very helpful if you don't already know hebrew, but the aleph bet thing they do is pretty decent. if you're looking at your hebrew page, on the bottom there's an aleph, and there are exercises you can do on that page.
Adding on with a book I found very helpful: Shalom Hebrew! Simple steps to reading Hebrew
(You can see that mine is already a well-loved copy)
It introduces just one or two consonants and maybe a vowel each lesson, tied to a vocab word.
One of the things I like best about it is that it has a lot of multi-modal exercises to 1. help get reps in and 2. help you use different parts of your brain.
Two caveats:
It was definitely helpful that I went through this in a class with a Hebrew instructor, but as an overachiever I mostly read ahead and made decent sense of it anyway, so I don’t think it’d be a bad experience on one’s own. And it covers a decent chunk of the weird pronunciation rules/exceptions.
It looks like it’s $21 from Behrman House publishing, which may put it out of yr price range, anon. (If that is the case, feel free to message me and I can help if you think this would be helpful otherwise!)
!!
I was able to recognize a phrase in a song (בוקר טוב עולם), understand its meaning, AND look it up to make sure I was correct with only minimal spelling mistakes! This is especially cool for me because עולם is a word I’ve only read in phonetic English spelling and haven’t encountered in actual Hebrew study yet.
(I’ve been learning Hebrew using duolingo for a little over a week so far.)
