This. THIS?! is where they cut to Sam so the audience can see his reaction. Not THEY had to bury Cas in a malak box, Dean's literal nightmare, no. Ever since DEAN had to. Cut to Sam's reaction not to losing everyone they've ever cared about, no, but to finding out his brother had to do that to Cas.

A list of people who have a death wish or gave up: Sam since he lost Eileen. A Canon Couple. AU!Bobby - no explanation, but he has lost Mary, twice. Jody - Since losing Donna and the Girls. Dean - Since losing Cas.

What is this scene if not a recognition of what Dean and Cas mean to each other? of the fact that Sam knows what Cas means to Dean? Sam has a bigger reaction to Cas than he does to Eileen. Do you understand how insane that is?

The scene is sandwiched btw two shots of the present - between where Dean may lose Cas & Dean's tree side purgatory confession.

It's sliding doors. It's present and future. Yes, it's a future that is impossible, it's Chuck's trick, it will never come to pass, but it is one that's supposed to make an audience feel something while seeing Dean and Cas come back together in real time. It's yet another parallel in an episode chock full of parallels.

If Sam loses Eileen he'll lose his hope. If Dean loses Cas he'll lose his hope. and Chuck isn't only showing Sam a future where they both have already lost, he's setting up a present to make that hopelessness come to pass.

ALSO LIKE. the relief of dean finding cas in purgatory in s8 vs when he found him in s15 is so palpably different and it is Delicious. in s8 he’s all smiles and open arms and already instantly joking around with him- ‘nice peach fuzz’ -and its literally off the tails of him spending a WHOLE YEAR finding him and yet he’s just so like? earnest? honest? convicted? in his belief that cas WOULD be okay and would come home with him that his relief isnt even like. “thank god i found you” but rather “FINALLY, i found you” because there isnt a possibility in his mind that he WOULDNT find cas and that cas WOULDNT come with him.. in contrast to the like tense relief of s15 where theres no smiles in his hug because he knows what its like to lose cas and he’s lost cas before and it is very much a “thank god i found you” hug. you almost cant even imagine dean giving him the s8 all-smiles purgatory reunion hug in the s15 scene. fellas does it All ever feel so fucking tense all the time always with the words youre both leaving unsaid.

no like. no like. dean was barely hanging on. barely hanging on and with no reason in the world to think cas was going to stop. so on his knees….. with his face completely bloody…… he uses what could very well be his last breaths to say. “i forgive you. i love you.”

and then nine seasons later in the middle of purgatory with the timer running out and no reason to think he’ll see cas again. he uses what could very well be his last audible prayer to say. i forgive you…. and i’m so sorry it took me so long to say it???????????????????????????????
