S1 Carol was brave, selfless, empathetic, and resilient - not “weak”

S2 Carol was brave, selfless, empathetic, and resilient - not “useless”

S3 Carol was brave, selfless, empathetic, and resilient - not “cowardly”

S4 Carol was brave, selfless, empathetic, and resilient - not “cold-hearted”

S5 Carol was brave, selfless, empathetic, and resilient - not “crazy”

It’s who she is. Brave, selfless, empathetic, and resilient. It’s who she’s always been - she just keeps blossoming.

I adore the recent new flood of articles praising Carol left and right, and I swoon right out of my chair when she’s called “unkillable” or “the most important character on TWD.”

However, I can’t lie. Within the past few days I have seen so many derogatory terms used to describe Carol before her so-called “transformation,” (I never saw it as a transformation — I’d use the word “evolution”) and it’s causing me to see a whole lot of red.

So can we all just pause for a second to realize that by the time S1 was over, Carol had:

  • Demonstrated what a loving, caring person she is by taking care of the quarry group in every way she knew how
  • Tried to give Carl food when he was hungry, even though she knew it would make Ed angry and possibly invite punishment for her
  • Stood up to Ed when he tried to make Sophia stay with him in the tent, thus protecting her daughter
  • Smashed a pickaxe through Ed’s head at her own request — Daryl was standing there ready to do it
  • Quietly tamped down her claustrophobia at the CDC so that her anxiety issues wouldn’t endanger the group
  • Watched the kids while everybody else was getting their drunk partying on (always selfless — don’t mind me while I sit here crying about my love for her)
  • Pulled a grenade out of her purse, thus saving the entire group from instant death

I’m not even gonna type out some of the words I’ve seen used to describe S1 Carol in the past few days, and by people who are actually praising the character.

But if you’re gonna bash S1 Carol, there’s no way in hell you deserve S5 Carol.

Between everything I quickly want to acknowledge that everytime Melissa McBride talks about abuse she uses the word survivors- not only for her character but in general.

She does not shy away from the subject and points out the strengths of those who survived it, and Carol herself stands for so much and she knows it and says and I adore her for it.

My guess would be that they know next to nothing before they received the first scripts. For example, Melissa didn’t know Carol was the muderer until she received the script where Carol confesses.

yes that’s right. i was just wondering because the way lennie and melissa are talking about their characters makes it seem like they know some stuff we’ll see.
