Captain Zoë Washburne stared out of the open cargo bay doors, her eyes darker than the clouds covering the sky.
Captain. It didn't feel right. Not when he was barely even a few hours dead.
There was a quiet scuff of shoes on the grill behind her and she turned, her eyes never leaving the greying landscape.
He barely stumbled over the title and Zoë had to concede that it was slightly impressive.
"I... I just wanted to-" he sighed and the captain finally turned to look at him. His eyes were faintly red and he was fiddling with the cuffs of his sweater, wet patches staining the sweater a dark blue.
Thunder echoed through the ship, rain pinging off of the hull.
Simon avoided Zoë's eyes and took a deep breath.
"I wanted to say that, as the new Captain, I understand if you want me and River off of the ship-"
Without warning Zoë punched him and he fell to the floor with a thud barely audible over the rain.
Simon looked up at her and wiped at his split lip, his eyes wide.
"Bi zui," Zoë said harshly, "Let me make something very clear, doc'. You were part of Mal's crew. That means you're a part of mine too. If I didn't want you here, you'd be long gone."
She stuck out a hand and the doctor hesitantly took it. Pulling him up, Zoë handed him a handkerchief, watching as he wiped the blood away.
"We don't let go of our own," she added softly. " 'specially not after something like this. Dong ma?"
Slowly, Simon nodded. "Dang ran."
They stood like that for a while, the rain steadily increasing, creating a curtain of greys.
"Do you need me to look at that?" he asked and Zoë flexed her hand. It hurt but not as much as her heart.
"It's fine, doc'. Go and be with your mei-mei and Kaylee. They need you."
Watching as he left, the new Captain of Serenity absent-mindedly rubbed over her raw knuckles, feeling better than she had before.
She now understood why Mal had always punched the doc'. It really did help.
In the distance, a figure staggered through the wind and rain, his brown coat the only colour for miles.
