I've been rewatching Pirates of the Carribean and have been wondering about One Piece's Davy Jones because I think he's mentioned in the Long aring Long Idland arc and that is it?. Was he a famous pirate? A myth? The one who ferries souls to their afterlife and a job that can be passed on?
I just imagine Thatch is dead, and his soul meets the current incarnation of Davy Jones, who's ready to move on himself and offers the role to Thatch. Either way. Thatch is going to be waiting for the rest of his family anyway, so he takes it the job. Unfortunately, he ends up seeing his brothers way too soon because of Marineford and the Payback war. Fortunately, many join his crew, and they all sail together waiting for the rest. Brothers keep joining them as they pass, and eventually they're just waiting for Marco to finally, somehow, kick the bucket. When he does, there's a great celebration that everyone's finally reunited (and whatever is used as money pass led around because they definitely took bets on how long they'd have to wait on Marco). The only thing left is to decide if they want to keep escorting sailors to their afterlives or find someone else to take the job and go enjoy new adventures.
I... really have nothing I can add to this, it's just perfect as it is.
What a beautifully sad and strangely comforting setup.
