Valkyrie II: Lacuna - Varien ft. Cassandra Kay

This song is actually for both Dione and a new siren character I haven’t talked about much, Ahira! SO therefore there are some spoilers here.

Both of these characters have a problem with feeling like they’re monsters. Dione especially has a guilt complex dealing with this issue in particular, because her being a witch that’s perhaps not entirely human anymore does some interesting things to her conscience. There are many times when she’s done things she’s regretted severely, and the contrast with how Ahira does some darn bad things and knows it but justifies them as being for the “greater good” is... interesting.

They both want to bring someone back from the dead. But that’s impossible, right? Dione maybe you should reconsider your priorities. Just. Just saying.

Mmmmmmmhhhh that doesn’t bode well .n. This is referring to both Ahira and Dione’s past: Dione was a princess exiled from her own kingdom, and Ahira was a Star Keeper (a really high siren rank) that kinda gave that rank up. And yes, both of them have a sanity that’s rather questionable.

Raise No Fool - Set It Off

Now this one is a bit of a spoiler. Though the theme doesn’t really fit the character, this song is actually from Captain Io’s perspective!

Let’s just say that Io was very close with her sister when they were younger, but... something happened to change that. And now she feels incredibly betrayed. That feeling may or may not be justified.

Of course, Io’s memories about the event are kinda mixed up, so... who knows!

Into The Storm - BANNERS

This song is kinda a general theme for some of the (friendly and romantic) relationships in OSS! Certainly not at first, but eventually the main four develop a lovely loyalty to each other, and it’s made apparent by the multiple occasions upon which they rescue or support each other (no matter how much Celestine complains about it XD)

Symbolism-wise, this song most closely fits Phoenix and Celestine’s eventual dynamic! Particularly this set of lines:

And of course, there’s that main line of “I’ll follow you into the storm”. Fitting in particular to the Fire Bird and Hissy Cat~

Okay so. Part of book one is the main crew trying to sneak into a Navy base. Doesn’t work out too well, but eventually they escape and well. Cause a bunch of chaos.

This song is very fitting to listen to while seeing the hijinks that Celestine and Phoenix get up to. It might also depict a bit of their relationship much later on.

So Dione has a half-sibling. And they’re very much so an annoyance. Buuuut they love each other despite all the snark and teasing. This song is like a bounce back between Dio and her sibling with the lyrics, with very, very contrasting views on conscience and regrets.

Dione’s got a guilt complex. She’s made so many mistakes she still regrets.

Her sibling?

... nnnot so much.

But this one? This one’s not from Dione.

Midnight Thoughts - Set It Off

This is one of my favourite songs. ^^

This one fits for all my insomniac characters, but Celestine in particular! Unfortunately the child has been on her own for more than a decade, and she’s not really had access to any help for her terrible nightmares and panic attacks. .n. She’s far more lonely than she’ll ever admit, even purposefully avoiding social contact due to her incredibly cynical nature and difficulty with trusting anyone. So yes. She might have some imaginary friends.

Or perhaps these imaginary friends were real at some point? Hints of her past occasionally slip past the barrier of her amnesia. It’s just a challenge telling apart the nightmares and the memories, most of the time.

Who Are You? - SVRCINA

Fun fact about this song: it’s one of the songs carried over from Chrome Diopside’s playlist to Dione’s! There’s this almost eerie feeling to the tone, that witchy mysterious ambiance that really fits her character. And the general theme of the lyrics refers to Dione’s difficulty with understanding herself and her own emotions a lot of the time.

She’s made so many wrong decisions, had so many errors, and she doesn’t always know why. Especially after the fact, particularly when her temper gets a hold of her, she’s left questioning if the one that did that... was that actually her?

What’s in her blood? Magic? Is that it? Hmmmm. Especially fitting lyrics to a character that tries to run from everything, be it other people to her own mistake to herself.

Two for two!

New Kings - Sleeping Wolf

This song could fit Isabel, Phoenix, and Captain Xuân all at once! They all have that sorta story that fits with the rising from a tough and underappreciated place to warriors and legends.

Of course, with Xuân it’s particularly fitting with their somewhat pretentious attitude now that they’re a well respected pirate captain. Phoenix is getting up there with the cockiness too, but not quite to that point. Certainly all three refuse to back down in fights.

Silhouette - Aquilo

This is another song that’s on Sindre’s playlist, referring to his memories of his relationship with his lost friend.

So much fun with their wild recklessness and innocent pranks when they were children, but that’s all gone, now. And what would happen, what would you think, if you finally found a long lost friend only to discover they don’t know you?

... But how could someone forget their childhood best friend?

This is on Celestine’s playlist! Which I mean... makes a lot of sense. Considering. You know.

She’s a snarky brat who loves to insult people.

But also! This is related to her fighting her nightmares and fears, and the indecision she faces in the story. Also about the major change to her life the storyline poses!

Warriors - Imagine Dragons and cover by 2WEI & Edda Hayes

Oh ohhh! I love this one!

So fun fact: before this came out, the original Warriors by Imagine Dragons was on Captain Xuân’s playlist. I originally loved the lyrics and they also fit really nicely in with Captain Io’s story, too, but the general theme of the song wasn’t quite serious enough to fit on her playlist. So when this cover was made, I absolutely loved how epic and cinematic it sounds!

All of these lyrics fit so well into Captain Io’s backstory: she was always training and working as a child, when any other kids (including her own sister) would be having fun with games and mischief. She so very thought she could change the world, make it better for her sister and her, but... it just didn’t end up happening. She changed, and not in the way she had wanted.

This song also makes sense with Lá Lúa! Lá was born a siren type that is known for their powerful magic---only problem? Lá had barely any magic, if at all. So all those games that the other finlings would play? The ones that relied on magic? Unh unh. What about even just every day tasks that would be so so easy for everyone else? Maybe they just take a small charm? Nope. Lá wanted to make things accessible to those like them. Reality got in the way. (That’s still their goal, though.)

Anyways, I just. Really really love cinematic pieces like this one because I daydream scene ideas to it really well! It’s so epic and inspirational!

Gosh I love so many of AURORA’s songs. They just carry such a nice, soft but wistful tone, you know? This one is on Dione’s playlist, with that look back to her childhood and her missing those times of carefree, innocent child-like wonder.

And she misses her mother.

She misses her dearly.

Waves - Dean Lewis

This one is on Sindre’s playlist but it also fits Celestine’s and Io’s backstories! To be honest, pretty much all of the lyrics are fitting, but there are some select parts that just really pop out to me when thinking about One Siren’s Soul, considering one of the major themes of the book is memories and the past being in the past.

There’s a lot of bittersweet nostalgia about who we once were and who we’re becoming. There’s relevance to those with depression or coping with the after effects of trauma.

Things do get better, though. ^^
