The reason he's the CEO of dropout is because when collegehumor was dying and the cast all wanted to keep working together and having fucking jobs, he was the only one in a mass of starving artists who could afford to buy and try to resuscitate it. That was a massive financial risk and the fact that it seems to be working is nothing short of a miracle. Everyone thank former US Secretary of Labor and general champion of worker's rights Robert Reich for raising a son with financial security.

Anyone saying that should go to his tumblr page, it's been nothing but absolutely eviscerating Trump and Musk for ages. He's an anti-corporate-power, pro-worker's-rights leftie who writes books about the failures of late stage capitalism and income inequality, and has spent most of his political career doing shit like passing bills guaranteeing medical leave and fighting to increase the minimum wage.

I have sooo many fandom things I've made that are just sitting here and I'd like to get rid of them. Buttons, pouches, coin purses... I can't do conventions anymore, which is where 99% of my sales for these used to be.

Anyone have suggestions on how I could run giveaways for a bunch of it? There are older fandoms (Voltron, Steven Universe, Pushing Daisies, Sense8, BBC Merlin) as well as ongoing ones (Miraculous Ladybug, Doctor Who, LotR universe, Game of Thrones universe, Pokemon)... It would be too wild to run something singular and expect everyone to be pleased with any of it haha

eclectic taste (not to be confused with good taste) is the only thing you actually need to be a good artist. i don't care if you like the right things, i literally only care abt the multitude of experiences and practices you have ingested.

so many common anxieties about art just crumble when you finally step into the wild side and make consumption as much a part of your job as creation. "my art sucks" gain a taste for art that sucks and employ it with intent. "i don't have a style i can call my own" consume everything and deliberately pick the elements you like. "i'm afraid of accidentally plagiarizing" plagiarize a second thing at the same time and then its yours

I was making a post that was vindictive and mean and I realized that it does nothing to make me feel better and is aimed at making others feel worse.

Choosing kindness is difficult, but we live in difficult times. I think the best thing we can do - the smallest thing we can do - is to choose kindness as much as possible.

Don’t let this turn you mean. Don’t let this poison you in a way that can’t be undone. Suffer no fools, but live your life with as much love as possible. It’s a tough choice, and it’s yours to make, but the only way for the world to be kind is for enough of us to make kindness our first choice.

advice from dad

So, my Dad is a 73-year-old Mexican man who has lived here since he was 16. He was in Watts during the riots in 1965; in 1992, when I was in LA, as soon as the Rodney King verdict was announced, he called me, told me what was coming, told me how to stay safe. He has survived horrible living conditions, being kidnapped, physical abuse, prejudice, discrimination. He learned English, got his green card, pays his taxes, works hard, and has three daughters. 

I thought he would be devastated today.

But he wasn’t.

He saw that I was sad and angry, and he asked me why, pretending he had no idea. I almost started crying. And then he said, “no se me chicopale.” 

It means, don’t lose heart. Don’t give in to despair.

I asked him why he wasn’t upset.

He said, basically, “The world has always been this way. There are always people who are afraid, who are racist, who are awful. This is not new. And it will never go away. He won. We can’t do anything about that. All we can do is what we can do. Fight for what matters to us. Take care of each other. And don’t lose heart. And here, I got these unsalted cashews for you and a bag of jamaica drink mix and can you show me how to use the new washing machine because it’s not working.”

And, for reasons I can’t articulate, I feel a little better. 

As a Jew who just spent two hours talking to a rabbi for the first time in thirty years, please give your dad a hug from me.

Tikun olam, the rabbi reminded me. Literally, it means world repair. It means we live in an imperfect world, and instead of looking to the Heaven of the next world, it’s our duty to be a light in THIS world – to protect those people who need our protection, to work for social justice, and to improve the world as a whole.
