Booktok should die and I’m serious

I don't know who needs to hear this but it's okay to be a casual fan. You don't need to know every little piece of lore from a piece of media to consider yourself a fan, and if learning every little piece of lore isn't your thing, then you don't have to do it! The point of fandoms is to have fun, so just focus on doing what brings you joy.
Sure, there will always be people in a fandom who are the token Information Master, but that person doesn't have to be you. Don't feel ashamed for not knowing a niche fun fact about a side character of a show that only appeared once for 5 minutes. It doesn't make you any less of a fan.
"Fandom would be more fun if we didn't take ___ so seriously."
True. Not every piece of media is a masterpiece. Sometimes it's "not that deep" and we just want to enjoy the content without thinking too hard about the flaws. It's like junk food: it's bad but still inticing in some way. But for some people, pointing out those flaws is what makes fandom fun, what makes fandom engaging. Obviously not the mean-spirited, negative anti side or the obsessive need to prove your ship/favourite character is more superior than the other. But having critical discussions, writing meta, and pointing out illogical or hypocritical plot points can be enjoyable too. Sometimes we can't turn our brains off, even if we are consuming content that is clearly "not serious". Fandom can be nuanced spaces.
Fandom is so different now and it’s becoming un-fun with how quickly shit moves.
I just want to enjoy things. I don’t want to have to play a game of Artist-Race that seems to be afoot lately.
Ya’ll eat up fandoms, leave artists and writers bone dry and then move on so fucking quickly then fucking wonder where all the Good Fandom Stuff is.
Idk Maybe cherish some things for longer. Reblog stuff. Interact with people. Comment and share.
Fandom is Capitalism now and I’m not being nuanced.
people also seem obsessed with only Doing Fandom about currently active works?
“oh, I’m so sad that show ended! I really miss the fandom!” who said you have to leave, coward
Fun fact: You are part of keeping a fandom alive. Every interaction, every person in a fandom has their own part to play. If that’s reblogging art, fanfics or making cursed edits, that’s good enough.
Fandom is for community, not consumption.

why r the beloved "morally gray" male characters of fandoms always like this is baby killer john he loves killing babies for fun and the fandom is like omg baby killer johnnn 😍😍😍 but a morally gray female character is like heres a traumatized teen girl thats meant to be deeply flawed and wrong at times but also went thru a lot and is meant to be sympathetic and nuanced and the fandom is like SHE NEEDS TO DIE RIGHT NOWWWW !!!!!!!!
some of y'all fundamentally misunderstand my favorite characters but im being sooooo normal and mature about it. i haven't even killed anyone yet
a lot of really annoying media discourse on tumblr comes down to people having a hard time accepting that both of the following are true at the same time:
- for any work of fiction interesting enough to be worth talking about, there will be multiple equally plausible and valid interpretations that are possible - and by interpretations here i don't just mean headcanons about minor details, i mean how you read the core themes and character arcs. and very often some of those equally valid interpretations will directly contradict each other and that's ok
- not EVERY interpretation is valid, some are genuinely just dumb as hell and unsupported by the text
"your ship will never be canon"
I started shipping for series that were already finished. Many of my ships have been for characters who are dead in canon. The ships being canonized in the source material has never been part of my motivation.
i think that people should start using “in poor taste” as a descriptor again given it is often the most applicable and clearest phrase when discoursing about media and analysis; sometimes a piece of art isn’t actually THE most problematic thing of all time is is. just in poor taste (not JUST in poor taste as a reductive take on potential harm but/and as in regardless of intent the impact is this was an offensive or stupid take/choice)
old fandoms that are still active/semi-active are actually the best fandoms tbh. like nowadays a show will come out and fandom will move on from it after six months but those shows with dedicated fanbases even though they ended a decade ago... those will never disappoint.
From my little perch on the outskirts of this fandom, seeing questions like “why do you ship these characters together when they don’t like each other?” or “how can you like this person when they did this bad thing?” (even though so many of this fandom's popular characters did terrible things or popular ships started off as hostile…) makes me believe that ACOTAR seems to be a lot of people’s introduction to young adult (YA) fiction, and their accompanying literary, character, and romantic relationship tropes. And because of that, this fandom seems really “young” yes in terms of demographics, but also in the sense that notions such as nuance and not taking things at face value are seemingly new concepts...maybe? There’s just something so “juvenile” and "robotic" about this fandom, and I think it would be interesting to dig deep into why that is.
3rd person is the most common perspective style…
I want to trap the can't-read-3rd-person poster in the same room as one of those people who hates 1st person so much they want to wipe it from the universe (usually through not being widely read and only encountering 1st person ever in a particularly annoying type of YA fiction). then we'd see who wins, and if they manage to overcome their differences and fall in love. i think i could make a whole anime out of that
The encounter between them should be narrated in second-person. To annoy both of them.
You think that’s a wonderful idea.
free my girl. she did all that but so did a male character and nobody cared
[scrolling through a fandom tag] wrong. wrong. incomprehensibly wrong. wrong but harmless. nice style and color palette but I don't care about that ship. mildly entertaining liveblog update. they whitewashed my girl :( . good joke, reblog. wro--well that's my mutual so I will politely look away. fifteen posts in a row by an innocent rp blog that I don't have the heart to block. take I agree with but op was annoying about it. chapter twenty-eight of a longfic wip. !! GOOD POST !!, instafollowed. bot. technically correctly tagged but uses this acronym for something completely different. museum worthy art piece by a sixteen-year-old from the philippines. wrong. wrong but in a new and exciting way that provokes thought.
is he acting out of character or did you get too attached to a headcanon
