You know what’s my favorite thing?

Roy Mustang’s stupid badass coat.

He wears it. frigging. all the time. This fucking coat survives longer than most characters in the show. Clearly it’s not part of the uniform since no one else has one. And I really don’t think Central’s that cold all the time. Which leads me to believe Mustang constantly wears this coat strictly because he thinks it makes him look cool. About to go overthrow the government but nope, wait, first gotta get the coat. Badass coat. Overthrow the Fuhrer in style.

That thing Ed did with the whole “transmute red cloth into his flamel coat so he could face the Promised Day in style”? Roy did exactly that too, but we don’t see it, and no one comments on it, because literally everyone working under Mustang has seen way too much of that stupid fucking coat.

I’m going to go through and document every instance of Mustang’s stupid badass coat because it’s pretty much more of a main character than he is

If you don’t know what I mean. Here’s “Mustang’s stupid badass coat, episodes 1-10″

Episode 1

Episode 2

(Mustang doesn’t appear in episode 3. Loser)

Episode 4

Episode 5 (two entirely separate scenes. he appears in the middle without his coat. like he took it off and then put it back on at some point)

(Mustang doesn’t appear in episode 6. Loser)

Episode 7

Bonus points for not even wearing it properly. Clearly it is too hot for that coat but Mustang refuses to take it the fuck off.

(Mustang appears once, only indoors, in episode 8. Doesn’t appear in 9. Loser)

Episode 10

There you are. Mustang’s stupid coat. This is just 1-10. Series is 64 episodes long. The coat does not go away. Asshole’s wearing this coat when he helps take down Father I’m about 96% certain. He loves this coat. He really just loves this coat so much.

Also, I would like to toss in an amendment to the original post. There is one person besides Mustang who sometimes wears that exact same coat.

And that’s Hawkeye

“Asshole’s wearing this coat when he helps take down Father I’m about 96% certain.“

I checked

He fucking

is.

Guys

the epilogue

he’s wearing the stupid badass coat in the epilogue.

This epilogue exists to let us know the stupid badass coat is safe and okay.

Ft. Riza in the same type of coat too.

I want to remind you that Mustang’s wearing this coat when he finds 11-year-old Ed in Resembool. He’s wearing it now, in the epilogue, which also features Ed with two kids, the older of which looks to be about 2 or so.

This coat’s almost an entire generation old. This coat’s old enough to have baby coats. This coat followed Mustang literally everywhere for decades and somehow never got destroyed once. Despite being attached to Roy “walking target practice” Mustang. Houses and cars belonging to Mustang were destroyed but not this fucking coat. Roy is a responsible and loving coat owner, beyond responsible.

This is the thing that survives.

This fucking coat

This fucking coat you guys.

I would also like to present my personal favorite commentary on this topic:

“How come you wear your coat like a cape, anyway?” said Ed. “Didn’t you grow out of the magician phase?”
“It’s a perfectly acceptable way to wear it,” said Roy. “It’s midway between wearing a coat and not. You know, if it’s too cold to go without a coat, but a bit too hot to wear it closed?”
“So wear it open.”
“It’s a perfectly acceptable way to wear a coat!” They weaved their way through the crowd towards a clear space to stand. “That I get my personal style satirised in a stage show only goes to show that I have style in the first place.”
“I stopped wearing my coat like a cape when I was six,” Ed said.

(from The Phoney War by @bob-fish, in one of the most hilarious scenes ever committed to fanfic, I fucking mean it)

did you erase his fucking mustache

So I was curious about the exact translation of this line of the manga

Because I was curious if he used the 'chan' suffix or not, since it doesn't really have a direct English translation, and the exact formality can change a lot of social context. So I found an image of the same panel in the original Japanese:

Suprisingly, he doesn't use any honoric, merely calling her 'Riza'. As far as I can see this has three possible explanations

  1. He was just being rude. The lack of honorifics could be a sign of disrespect towards Riza. This seems like the least likely since he otherwise acts pretty respectfully to both her and her father.
  2. He dropped it out of panic. Roy is watching his father die, it checks out that he would be a bit of a mess. The thing is, I don't feel like I'd refer to someone differently if I was in a panic, I think I'd just address them in the way I was used to, then again I don't speak Japanese so I wouldn't know.
  3. He considered their relationship to be very close. From what I understand dropping honorifics is only considered appropriate for very close friends or family for whom no formality is required.

To me, it seems most likely the third, which would be an interesting detail, especially considering how formally Riza treats him. Just thought that was interesting!

Hello, your previous post on State Alchemists really piqued my interest, thanks a lot for sharing that! Do we know more about the (annual?) exam they have to take to keep their license? For example, how does Roy keep his? Does he need to constantly innovate his alchemy?

Thank you, as always <3

Hello there!

There's sadly not a lot of information about this in canon. This paragraph from the first perfect guide is all we have in terms of an actual explanation:

To become a State Alchemist, you must pass four tests: written exam, practical exam, psychiatric evaluation, and interview. Furthermore, even after obtaining national qualifications, it is not possible to enjoy the benefits without doing anything. Once a year, candidates are required to undergo an assessment based on a report and practical skills, and if they do not receive a good evaluation, they may be disqualified. Research papers are often written using codes so that others cannot understand them.

So it's more of an annual evaluation rather than an exam, and all they're required to submit is a report. What they're required to report we don't know, but we have one mention of it in the manga:

So the report must not be too detailed and strict, otherwise Ed wouldn't get away with bullshiting it on a train ride. However, we do know the assessment itself is not a joke because of the whole Shou Tucker fiasco. So… how are Ed and Roy passing it so easily, and what are they reporting?

I discussed this with @scienceoftheidiot once and we concluded that the State Alchemist research probably works just like any public funded academic research in the real world. I'm not in academia, so I'll let you ask her how that works. In this scenario Roy and Ed would have to report every year that they have done research that's beneficial to the military.

HOWEVER.

There's a catch in the explanation from the perfect guide. They evaluate based on a report AND practical skills. The practical skills part is very important. We see Ed, Roy, and Armstrong constantly use their alchemy in combat for the benefit of the military. As I understand it, THIS is the practical use of alchemy, and it counts as part of their annual evaluation.

That means Roy, Ed, Armstrong, and all the other State Alchemists with combat expertise can get away with reporting a lot less than the theoretical alchemists like Marcoh and Shou Tucker. These last two can only prove their worth in knowledge, while the former can prove their worth with actions.

The most likely scenario here is that Roy and Ed are just reporting all the incidents where they helped the military with their alchemy (Liore, Youswell, the train terrorists, etc), as opposed to developing new alchemy research every year. That would explain how Ed can get away with writing the report on a train ride and why there's a CLEAR bias towards combat alchemy among the State Alchemists. It's just easier to keep the license with practical skills than with pure research.

Of course, Roy could choose to report any new alchemy research he develops (and canon does say he performs research and has notes. We just don't know the subject). But let's be honest… Why would he if he can get away with less? lol

I hope that answers your question! Thanks, this is always so much fun to write. 😁

Amestris is an absolutely wild place. They have 1950s cars and a stratocracy and name their kids shit like Hoenheim and Alphonse, but then you’ve got crazy magic science nonsense and Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye. Winry can make a metal arm that is connected directly to Ed’s nerves and somehow transcends everything we know about biotech, but they still ride horses and rely on WWII era means of communication. What…. what’s going on here

Y'all seem to forget WWII had a lot of hippomobile units, partly because of the oil shortage.

That was especially true of the Polish army in 1939 for example and of course the Wermarcht for most of the war, but not only. The last European cavalry charges happened inbetween 1941 and 42 depending on countries.

Also the cars in FMA are 1910-1930 mostly. The weapons and army stuff 1940. Except for the uniforms wich pick in various countries and years between late 1800s to 1940

It IS all over the place but those specific things aren’t as insane as you think they are 😅

(the automail is magic though but eh alchemy is too)

But also YES THE AESTHETICS

They’re coming out with Chinese soon, too!

I tested it out on French and it seems to be very similar to Rosetta Stone - but it’s free, and teaches grammar. The price of Rosetta Stone and the fact that it doesn’t teach grammar are the only huge drawbacks of it, so Linguti seems to be really good!
