Didn't the Russian concentration camp turn out to be nonsense though? Correct me if i'm wrong but I remember seeing a post that actually pointed out that the "sources" were incredibly sketchy and that it originated from some russian tabloid

the source is novaya gazeta, a newspaper renowned in russia for their uncompromising political and social investigation. 6 of their journalists have been killed in attempts to silence them. human rights watch, a watchdog organization, says they received credible information describing the inhumane treatment and detainment of gay men. the US state department corroborated this by saying they’ve received data reporting at least 100 men are in detention, and that they condemn russian officials for not doing anything to speak out against this or to release the men in question.

so you can believe snopes, a website that exists to do your fact checking for you, a three-time award winning newspaper, a watchdog organization that exists to whistleblow on things like this and the goddamn state department of the US fucking A, or you can believe a post you saw on tumblr by some loser anti-sjw who desperately wants to believe they don’t live in a world in which bad things happen to minorities.

if you see people spreading false information like this suggesting that this isn’t happening, discredit them. don’t buy in to someone else’s lie because it makes you feel comfortable.

Also, the Russian LGBT Network, a long-standing and reputable organisation, have reported that they are directly involved in evacuating LGBT men from Chechnya and have heard their stories first hand.

The Guardian has (anonymised) interviews with two men who escaped Chechnya in the last few weeks: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/13/they-called-us-animals-chechens-prison-beatings-electric-shocks-anti-gay-purge (tw for torture, blackmail and death)

Why do gay people deserve less from society? Why is it that gay people need to be the ones who should change who they are so people won’t feel uncomfortable and harm them in retaliation? Is violence the only resort when dealing with people whose appearance and mannerisms are different from our own?

Shakira Sison, a queer Pinay, in Being Gay. Really.

This is a direct question to all those straight people (and queers with internalized homophobia), who says we have to stop acting "gay"/act "less gay" in order for straight people to stop beating us, maiming us, and killing us. Why can't you just stop being violent towards us?

Meanwhile a black trans woman was lit on fire last year, a white lesbian was shot in the head, and  a gay black teen was jumped in front of a liquor store in broad daylight. This is what I’m talking about when I mention our invisibility. As long as gay white men and boys are the only ones  getting any attention not only are the rest of us invisible, but so is our suffering. So when you see me yawning at the “totes cute” gay couples on tv shows and in commercials and on Tumblr you will know why.

Nationalism was the powerful and revolutionary idea which inspired and mobilized the people of colonized countries in Southeast Asia to fight for their political independence after World War II. Then, post-colonial governments invoked it to unify their nations against real or imagined foreign aggressors.

In the era of globalization, nationalism became appealing once more for people who wanted to preserve their local identity and culture, especially in developing nations with governments that are suspicious of the Western promotion of the Washington Consensus.

On the whole, nationalism is useful and even necessary to stabilize the hegemony of nation-states. But its unifying power could also turn deadly if allowed to mutate into xenophobia, creating race-based prejudices, ethnic hatred, and religious conflict.

Today, there seems to be a surge of this deadly brand of nationalism across Southeast Asia.

Burma is embroiled in conflict as riots between Buddhists and Muslims flared up anew in the towns of Meikhtila, Minhla, Moenyo and Latpadan. More than 40 people have already been killed in the two weeks of conflict, while shops, houses, and places of worship have been burned to the ground.

President Thein Sein blamed the violence on religious extremists “who exploit the noble teachings of religions and tried to plant hatred among people of different faiths for their own self-interest.”

Buddhism is a state religion in Burma. Meanwhile, Muslims comprise about four percent of the country’s population.

What is most unfortunate in the Meikhtila riot is that it was a mere private dispute in a market which turned ugly and became a bloody riot in a town where Buddhists, Muslims, and people of other faiths have historically lived peacefully as neighbors.

The civilian government must immediately investigate the possibilities that someone or some groups deliberately instigated some of the recent violence in Burma. It should also probe its police and army officers who are suspected of being involved in the riots, as reported by Tomas Quintana, UN special envoy on human rights in Burma.

Francis Wade speculates the riots could also reflect the disturbing rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in Burma. Likewise, dissident scholar Maung Zarni warned against “genocidal Buddhist racism” whose proponents “have chosen to pursue a destructive nationalism that is rooted in the fear of losing property, land, and racial and religious purity.”

While religious nationalism is stoking the flames of violence in Burma, the issue of national identity has triggered a divisive debate in Singapore. The Singaporean government’s population strategy published in January mentioned the protection of a so-called “Singapore Core” as it continues to accept more foreign workers and immigrants to reverse the country’s shrinking and aging population.

Many Singaporeans rejected the proposal to increase the number of foreigners and demanded that Singapore remain a country of Singaporeans. More and more Singaporeans are blaming the influx of foreigners for rising prices, worsening traffic, and difficulty finding jobs. Fortunately, the heated debates on the meaning of Singaporean identity and citizenship has not escalated – at least for now

The motivation to define an authentic citizen is not limited to Singapore. In 2006, researchers from the Chulalongkorn and Mahidol Universities in Bangkok claimed that they have already identified the Thai gene sequence – the so called “true Thai” DNA. Moreover, the Filipino genome project was revived in February, eliciting discussions on Filipino race and ethnicity. While the scientific basis of these initiatives is benign, the results can easily be appropriated by ultra-nationalists to bolster racist agendas.

Meanwhile, Malaysia has allegedly stolen Indonesia’s cultural heritage, provoking nationalist outrage on the part of the latter. While Indonesia and Malaysia have good relations as neighbors, they often clash over the ownership of certain cultural icons. In 2009, Indonesia accused Malaysia of stealing Balinese dance. Last year, an Indonesian education official claimed that Malaysia has misappropriated seven Indonesian cultural products as part of its national heritage.

Territorial wars are natural triggers for nationalist propaganda, as seen in the way that the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute in Preah Vihear sparked an intense ultra-nationalist hate campaign in both countries. Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu wanted to reclaim Sabah for the benefit of the Philippines, but the Malaysian government insists that Sabah will remain part of Malaysia forever.

The lynching of Jesse Washington. Washington was beaten with shovels and bricks, was castrated, and his ears were cut off. A tree supported the iron chain that lifted him above the fire. Jesse attempted to climb up the skillet hot chain. For this, the men cut off his fingers. Jesse was 15. 1916.

I don’t know if I want to cry or throw up

Look at their fucking faces in the background

I hate them.

and white people swear they’re sorry, they’ve changed and we can now trust them FUCK OUTTA HERE!

That bitch on the right is smiling. He’s actually happy about what has taken place. What kind of sick person you have to be to find joy in a child being killed in front of your eyes?

Not all white people are like these crazy mother fuckers

If all you have to say to this is “We’re/They’re not all like that”

You need to do some reavaluating

Because trying to save face with shit like this in front of you is not cute and it is very, very, telling of where your head is at on the matter.

This is a disgusting, inhuman thing to see. And yes, claiming that “we’re not all like that” is a perfectly valid thing to say when reading the comment that treats persons of faint color as a group with a collective identity and unvarying desire to abuse others. Does this person also believe that all Germans still want to massacre Jews and the disabled? They must, because societies never change; we’re just the product of our forefathers and are bound to repeat their horrific actions. We all definitely think that torture and murder are acceptable (if not simply a delight), that our race is the best (and the smartest!…and the most kick-ass!), and that the world would be better off without POC (Hell, I might even try to bleach my horrible farmer’s tan away before I naturally start wanting to murder myself for having the Hispanic side of my family show). Just one, big, dominating, white socioethnic group, united in hatred, ignorance, and greed. Also, all Jews love sarcasm.

Oh for the love of Jesus Christ, I was trying to avoid blogging this photo but fuck white tumblr folks need to fucking understand how awful it is to look at this photo and say "but we aren't all like that", Like okay great I'm sure most People of color understand that but when you say that you are saying that you're hurt feelings and your guilt over the history of white supremacy is more important than the actual life and death of a person of color and it shows a lack of empathy for that person of color and I need you to understand why that is wrong and why you need to shut the fuck and think about what you've said.

If you think that victims of anti-LGBTQ violence are partly to blame for the crimes committed against them because they "acted too gay", or "dressed inappropriately", or "was out too late" or any myriad of excuses,

An environmental activist who took a stand against drug gangs has been murdered along with her 10-year-old son in the southern state of Guerrero.
Juventina Villa Mojica was under police protection after receiving death threats when she went to make a phone call and was ambushed by at least 30 attackers, reported Democracy Now. Her seven-year-old daughter survived, but her 10-year-old son was also killed. More than 20 members of her extended family, including her husband and two other children, had already been murdered.

Keep in mind that just a few days ago Dr. María Gorrostieta Salazar, former mayor of the municipality of Tiquicheo, Michoacan, Mexico was brutaly tortured and killed at the hands of a Mexican drug gang for also denouncing drug cartel violence. Completely unacceptable. I wonder what the PRI, who tomorrow reclaims their dictatorship presidency after 12 years out of power, plans to do about this…

After Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law received national attention following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, those of us who were stunned by the killing feared that the widespread support of Stand Your Ground across the country as it revealed itself in news punditry, social media, and the comments section of nearly every website that carried a Trayvon Martin story, would only lead to more shootings; shootings where the victims will frequently be young and black; shootings were the shooters will all too often be older and white, and able to avail themselves of attention-seeking pundits whilst making allusions to deep-sided suburban prejudices and taking donations from supporters in sympatico across the country.

That fear seemed substantiated when Marissa Alexander, a black woman, failed to successfully argue Stand Your Ground when she fired a warning shot near her abusive ex-husband who was assaulting her. It was clear that Stand Your Ground, as a consequence, created the appearance that certain protected classes of people would be given automatic deference in shootings whilst others would not. A white man can shoot and kill a black teen. A black woman can not even threaten her male attacker.

Jordan Russell Davis’ killing at the hands of 45-year old Michael David Dunn, is the realization of every fear we have had since George Zimmerman fled the state, then was seemingly allowed every courtesy from police and prosecutors thereafter. Stand Your Ground does not have to claim another victim. It hasn’t yet, and it won’t unless a jury of Floridians decide that it is okay for a white man to shoot a black teen, return to his car, then drive back to his hotel and presumably enjoy the rest of the evening before fleeing the city the next morning after learning that he killed his victim.

  •   Maria Santos Gorrostieta had been stabbed, beaten and burned
  • She defied Mexico’s powerful drug gangs, who twice tried to gun her down previously
  • She was kidnapped in broad daylight in front of her terrified daughter
  • The former mayor leaves behind three children

This is an absolutely heart-wrenching and tragic story. If anybody ever dismisses wanting to end the nonsensical US drug war and the cause of drug legalization as something frivolous and self-serving to potheads, make sure you link them this article. 50000 Mexican people have died in cartel violence since 2006. How in the world do people anywhere in the world find this acceptable?

One of the many forms that gentrification is taking in East Portland.

The cops say they’re protecting the community from this, but LET’S ALL REMEMBER THAT THE COPS HERE ARE VERY LITERALLY PART OF THIS WHITE SUPREMACIST FORCE. Here is an example: The Portland police commander, Capt. Mark Kruger, who oversaw the eviction of Patricia and Darren a couple weeks ago with 100 riot cops, IS A KNOWN NAZI. He ordered those riot cops to bring out pepper spray and shotguns against the community that came to support the foreclosed couple. http://www.portlandmercury.com/BlogtownPDX/archives/2012/10/30/reports-riot-cops-pepper-spray-at-home-eviction-in-southeast

White supremacy is violently forcing African folks out of Portland. Cops, developers, and white supremacists are all working to drive people of color out of this city.

In these same NE neighborhoods, there are currently three families that are actively fighting gentrification and defending their homes from foreclosure and eviction. We need to help these families defend themselves from both police and violent white supremacists.

Strikingly, Muslims have not been the only targets of Islamophobic violence. A number of different American communities have been impacted by Islamophobia, and practitioners of the Sikh religion make up one of the most adversely affected minority groups. The distinctive physical appearance of typical Sikh males in particular — brown skin, turban, beard — correlates with the stereotypical images of terrorists projected in western media. Scholars have recently described this perceived relationship as a racialization of religious identity. This process has led to a conflation of Sikhs and Muslims, and therefore, has produced a corollary to Islamophobia — Sikhophobia.

But really people

What kind of person/group is more likely to shoot up a Sikh temple in America?

A xenophobic white Christian KKK splinter group/member?

Or basically anyone else in the world?

“Why do you all assume it was a white/christian/etc. before the evidence is in?”

Because of precedence and logic based on past events.

In the wake of tragic gun violence, most politicians realize the decent, responsible thing to do is send sympathies to those affected while leaving politics out of it. Others aren’t as sensible.

After the Columbine massacre, for example, then-Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) blamed science textbooks for the murders: “Our school systems teach the children that they are nothing but glorified apes who are evolutionized [sic] out of some primordial soup.”

In 2007, after the Virginia Tech massacre, Newt Gingrich blamed liberals for supporting “situation ethics,” adding, “Yes, I think the fact is, if you look at the amount of violence we have in games that young people play at 7, 8, 10, 12, 15 years of age, if you look at the dehumanization, if you look at the fact that we refuse to say that we are, in fact, endowed by our creator, that our rights come from God, that if you kill somebody, you’re committing an act of evil.” Gingrich, explaining the VT tragedy, went on to condemn Halloween costumes and the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance law.

And this morning, after the slayings in Aurora, Louie Gohmert weighed in with some stupidity of his own.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Friday that the shootings that took place in an Aurora, Colo. movie theater hours earlier were a result of “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs” and questioned why nobody else in the theater had a gun to take down the shooter.
During a radio interview on The Heritage Foundation’s “Istook Live!” show, Gohmert was asked why he believes such senseless acts of violence take place. Gohmert responded by talking about the weakening of Christian values in the country.
“Some of us happen to believe that when our founders talked about guarding our virtue and freedom, that that was important,” he said. “Whether it’s John Adams saying our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people … Ben Franklin, only a virtuous people are capable of freedom, as nations become corrupt and vicious they have more need of masters. We have been at war with the very pillars, the very foundation of this country.”
“You know what really gets me, as a Christian, is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of a derelict takes place.”

I see. So, in the mind of this strange Republican congressman, a madman killed 12 people because of … the separation of church and State? The First Amendment is to blame for a shooting spree in a movie theater?

If decency had any place in American politics, this would be an immediate career-ender for the ridiculous congressman from Texas. Some political missteps are simply unforgivable.

Update: Gohmert also wondered aloud why no one else in the theater was armed, complaining that the victims should have shot back.

This is how American media works:

  • Brown guy = Terrorist, extremist, illegal.
  • Black guy = Hoodlum, thug.
  • White guy = Under stress, isolated case, lone wolf, sympathized with, etc etc.

And then there are people who have the nerve to claim we live in a post-racial society.

An exhaustive report on the deaths of 110 Blacks in the United States at the hands of police, security guards and self-appointed vigilantes during the 6-month period ending June 30 “clearly indicates there is a human rights crisis in the U.S.,” said Ajamu Baraka, of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. “If these numbers were coming from somewhere else, indicating that a particular population was being subjected to militarized violence from the state…many people around the world would agree that there was, in fact, a human rights issue.” Yet, even so-called progressive media “aren’t picking up on the report,” said Rosa Clemente, the Green Party’s 2008 vice-presidential candidate.
