Puya berteroana or Turquoise Puya is a terrestrial Bromeliad from the mountains of Chile. It forms a rosette of silvery-green leaves about 3-4 feet tall and wide. Over the years, it forms a large colony of pups. The leaves are spiny, but the flower stalks themselves are soft, and the blossoms are silky-smooth. Birds like to sit on the outward-pointing tips and drink the nectar out of the blooms.
Seed heads of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius)
A little market photography: As Thailand is a Buddhist country, it’s common to see lotus flowers or Dok Bua sold on the streets or in local markets as they represent purity of the mind and the spirit, and also connote good fortune.
This is a Geosiris. It grows in Madagascar. It is also a parasite. More specifically it's a myco-heterotrophic parasite, meaning it takes it's nutrients from fungi without contributing back to the fungi. Like many parasitic plants, the beautiful purple flower is the only visible part of the plant. It lacks chlorophyll (thus lacks leaves) and most of its body lies underground.
