there was this one fantasy book i ADORED in my elementary (?) school library. it had sort of a misty hazy purple ish colour i think. there was this like magic veil into the magic world which was super evocative to me at the time, that your fairy (?) people had to cross through to get to their fairy (?) village (?). partway through someone got hit by lightning and that was probably plot important but it was also emotionally relevant to me. there were scars from the lightning involved in the plot i think? i think it was a sister or an aunt. there might have been romance but there was also family dynamics. …does this sound familiar at all to anyone 😭
shit… maybe it was the mc who got hit i don’t actually remember. but it was like really windy in some seasonally important time and she was having a crisis and then bam lightning. i think she was looking for someone? in the windy storm? help plz 😭

it’s possible there was a sequel but i don’t think the library had it so i never read it

just found this insane interview with sayaka murata. explains everything
the city is so beautiful when it is snowing at night.. the glow of the street lamps illuminating the white ... <3 you could not make me go outside in this weather but i am filled with love.
not gonna put this on my writeblr bc that’s dead af and a project in its own right but i’ve been thinking abt silicone heart & my issue is just that i’m so indecisive… the plot is never quite clear and i’m worried it’s just a flimsy premise… like silicone heart has always been abt depression & coming home but i never explain away their memory loss even though that’s the opening sequence. and then why would you be like this if you don’t remember anything at all? they’re stuck in a limbo… the other day i had the idea of coming home & seeing yourself lifeless but still moving & such… maybe the reason why silicone heart is like this is because the stress & burdens of their physical body is being passed on to them… & so if u take away memories in this context you’ve got to get them back & so i thought if u make physical contact you could become yourself again but like why would you ever touch yourself if u signed a deal w devil to separate yourself or so to speak etc etc wahhh it has to be a char growth thing doesn’t it. i hate it here.
maybe silicone heart just doesn’t have any personality rn? tbf i think i write flat chars that could be it but how do u fix that 😖😖 like i abstracted away so much bc i’ve been into characters with a nebulous self (thanks anonymous from shimanami tasogare) for the last few years & i thought it would fit the themes of silicone heart but maybe i took too much and there’s no character left 😫😫
anyway this was brought on bc i was thinking of how silicone heart doesn’t rly have a face but not in the way of that cartoon that scarred me when i was 6 but more so like a scribble in black crayon over thick paper.
re memories maybe the bane begins to puppet (or always puppeted?) silicone hearts old body? we could get some vitriolic strangling -> memories -> turning point??
also i should write a 3 pov interlude… idk who but it would make a nice zooming out effect

9, 13, & 22 for the reading ask game! & if u’ve answered those then pls pick ur fave unasked question & do that pls~
9. how is the reading year going in general?
pretty good! i havent been reading much in the last month, but earlier in the summer i was really reading quite a bit. and, i think, compared to the last couple of years, i've been reading more than usual.
13. do you have any reading goals? if so, what are they?
hmm not any at the moment? i passed my goal of read 24 books this year and haven't set any more since. i think maybe ill try to finish at least 1 more book between now and the end of the year? even if i dont read during school, i should be able to read something after exams end, haha.
22. do you plan your reading? do you just pick up whatever book sounds nice at the moment? how do you go about choosing what books to read?
answered here!
thank you for the ask!!
3, 8, 22 for the ask game?
3. what’s a book you were pleasantly surprised by?
im going to assume this yr... i dont think there was much? like i was def pleased reading some but idk if i would say surprised. or surprised but disappointed instead? the one thing i can think of is maybe lesser known monsters of the 21st century bc while i didnt place the author when i borrowed it from the library, i read the author’s the lost girls of camp forevermore a few years ago for english class and didnt care for it. but this one was largely p good! so that was a pleasant surprise, i guess.
8. what’s a book you want to read by the end of the year?
i guess ill answer this more in 22, but i dont really plan a specific order of books to read?? so i guess i wanna finish what im currently reading, since i wont be reading much once school starts. but im also not really feeling the books im reading rn, so i might just dnf them lol. maybe wuthering heights? ive been meaning to read that forever (and almost bought it the other day lmfaoo) but never got around to it.
22. do you plan your reading? do you just pick up whatever book sounds nice at the moment? how do you go about choosing what books to read?
ahahah as much as i like to keep my “next 5 books to read” or whatever it is on storygraph full, i never use it. oops. i normally keep an eye out for books to read -- what i see people (typically whose tastes i trust or am interested in trying) talking about, or just a cool cover in a bookstore, or sometimes the “recommended books” section on storygraph -- and add it to my tbr, which then i just uselessly scroll thru forever until i decide to place a hold on it. if the library has it. sometimes its a bit of a method of what genre i wanna read (like, i sought out horror books cause i wanted to try horror, i read the ghost bride bc i wanted to read smth more romance-esque), but also sometimes its just picking a cover or title at random from my tbr. if the library doesnt have it, i normally go to z-library and download a copy, but that also doesnt mean i necessarily read it right away; i normally only read the stuff ive downloaded on my phone if i have to kill time. back when everything was shut down i read a lot more on my phone, but ive mostly stopped doing that bc physical books are a bit easier to read. if im reading on my phone and its not smth i just got, i normally go w whatever i downloaded last and havent yet read, bc theyre all in the same mental category of “i thought this would be good to read at some point, but i havent read it yet so i must not have cared too much” lol. do u have any particular way of picking what to read next? :0 theres gotta be a better way of doing it, but also too much structure makes the books feel boring and/or a chore and/or too hyped up??
thanks for the ask!!
19, 21, 27!
19. do you only buy books you’ve read? if not, how do you choose which books to buy?
i generally only buy books i’ve read, the exceptions being if it’s a gift for someone else and the book is something they want or if i can justify the price. for example, friends of the library puts on book sales for extremely reduced prices, so if i see a book there that i’ve been wanting to read and i’ve heard a lot of good things about, then i’ll get it, because it’s only $1-3 (at least it is in my city). if there are mass market paperbacks in general (which are generally pretty cheap) then i’ll possibly buy the book, depending, once again, on if it’s a book i’ve heard good things about and how much the price is reduced (i found a copy of ru online for about $6 so i’ll likely be ordering that, for example).
21. who’s an author that’s become a favorite this year? if you don’t have one, do you have an author who you’ve read a lot from this year?
hmm i’m not quite sure. i’ve read a lot of tolkien this year, but i have conflicted feelings about him and i’ve read from him before. ig dostoevsky might be the best answer cause i’ve read multiple of his works + enjoyed them, but otherwise, i’d probably say the authors of manga i’ve read (so shirahama kamome (witch hat atelier), urushibara yuki (mushishi), and nihei tsutomu (blame!))
27. any “unpopular” book opinions?
i don’t know how unpopular this is, but like. ultimately i don’t care if someone is actually only reading fic or only reading mass produced books as long as they’re aware of what the impact of that is, both on their own perception of media and on the industry as a whole, and are aware that that (aka fic or mass produced books which are generally formulaic and repetitive) is what they are reading. like i can’t control what people read but at least be self-aware, and especially, be self-aware enough not to trainwreck conversations about how publishing is changing (and not necessarily for the better). also not to project their own preferences onto other people because “read what you want” doesn’t mean “read ‘trash’“ it literally just means read what you want, which could be theory, could be classics, could be anything.
thanks for the ask!
oh man hearing that ur considering buying ru is now a lot of pressure considering i just told u i liked it lmaooo do u ever have cut offs for when to buy or not buy a book?? the other day i found a deal that was like 3 (new) books (out of a small selection) for $10 and i spent like a half hour trying to decide whether or not to go for it.... in the end i didnt bc it would be three books that i havent read before and only one of them i was intending on reading in the near future (i.e. next couple of years) but i was soo tempted. also do u normally get books secondhand or new?
i feel like ive heard (seen?) u talk a lot abt dostoevsky! i think i put some books of his on my tbr a while ago cause i thought u liked his stuff lol. also im curious what are ur thoughts on tolkien if ur willing to share? i havent read much of his stuff so im :0
and thats an interesting answer! i find it really interesting that u say like, dont trainwreck conversations about publishing + dont project preferences bc like, do people do that that often?? maybe im just not in the right circles?? cause ive definitely seen people complain about these (or at least the latter) but im not sure thats something ive seen much myself lmfaoo. i would generally agree w u tho in that its good to ground what u are reading wrt the world and/or its affects on u! i was thinking abt this the other day actually from a writing perspective bc i was trying to strip down a couple of my short stories and determine whether it was... something i actually wanted to write and/or understood what i was trying to say and whatnot. & i was thinking abt the difference in that effort b/w the different stories ive written from time, medium, etc. ...i wrote a whole bunch of other sentences here that sort of fragmented off and didnt really go anywhere lmao but i think this all is smth neat to think abt !
helloooo. here is an ask as u requested 😳 read anything interesting lately? i am becoming very fond of the storygraph recommendation system—i didn’t like it much at first, but it’s growing on me haha. and have u been writing recently? if so, what abt & anything you’d like to share?
the main things i've been reading recently are nonfiction, manga, and the history of middle earth series. the first two nonfiction books i've read were misses, but the one i'm reading now, merchants of doubt, is really cool so far. it's from 2010, but it's about how these scientists covered up the truth about tobacco and global warming (as well as other areas related to that, like the effects of secondhand smoking). i finish mob psycho 100 yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. before that i finished nausicaa of valley of the wind (and i've realized i was writing the title wrong the entire time smh), which i also think is a good story, but the most impactful volumes for me for the last two. i'm going to start the reigen volume soon, but that'll probably be it for manga for a while. and the history of middle earth series i'm read because i'm a nerd and like tolkien, and it's really interesting to see the ways the stories have evolved and the ideas that were scrapped (some i agree with scrapping but other times i'm just like, jirt why??).
so, uh, in general for reading something interesting lately that i'd actually recommend... mob psycho 100 and merchants of doubt, so far.
i haven't used the recommendations system all that much yet (mainly because i have 734 books on my tbr and i know there's more that aren't on my thestorygraph tbr :pensive:) so i'm very hesitant to use it yet. what's your favorite part of it? :eyes:
honestly i've been in a bit of a slump recently with like, creating things in general. it's the usual mood that i don't like anything i'm creating, i think i suck, etc. etc. which is really annoying, but i'm trying to get myself past it. for art, i've mainly been trying to go back to the basics and i've fallen off on writing everyday, but i'm going to try and make it very lowkey again (writing something and i'm probably going to do it for a side project that i'm drafting out, cause both are very low stakes). for side projects, there are kind of four main ones, all of which have very creative and super accurate titles: "time travel mult trans" which is about multiple time travelers who don't know any of the others exist (they also left time and went back in time at different points so it's confusing. i had to make a timeline); "coming back from the dead" which is about a necromancer bringing a kid back from the dead and the ugly fallout; "local man" which is that bit of flash fiction i did where local man was possessed by a ghost who he's since adopted. not looking forward to the newspaper format but needs must; "the ship of theseus" which is a study into a transmigrator, because i find the concept of transmigration really fascinating.
thank you for the ask and hbu? anything interesting you've read/written?
oooh interesting. i don’t read a lot of nonfiction but merchant of doubt does seem cool! also i loved mp100 lol so it’s nice to hear u did too 😂
hmm as for the rec system… honestly, it’s nothing in particular. i don’t even use it all that well bc u have to pay for it, i just like how it shows u covers & u get to check them out LOL. i think i said that tho bc i found this one book whose description was very interesting thru that earlier today, it feels like it’s been getting more accurate.
and ahhh that’s fair - idt ive heard u talk abt the ship of theseus one yet, what’s that one abt/what are u studying abt transmigration? :0
hmmm interesting reads… probably the diving pool by yoko ogawa. i loved that novella. i’m reading acceptance by jeff vandermeer rn and so far it’s not too bad. i loved the opening sequence but it’s tapered off a bit recently. wrt manga, i’ve been keeping up w akane banashi, which i think is adorable.
as for writing… i’ve been doing some edits on silicone heart & working on a couple short stories i’ve had in the works for ages now, but not a whole lot of progress for me either ahaha
ohh icic. maybe i’ll take a look at the rec system sometime soon just to see what books pop up. it’d definitely be very interesting.
there are a lot of things i find interesting, but mainly like, how would people actually react to that, what does it mean to be a person and what are you willing to do to get a “happy ending,” if one is even possible (and how you justify that). because let’s say you die, and then boom, you wake up again. already, your belief in what life is may be shaken from that, but either you find out from a system or from yourself that hey, you’re now in another person’s body and you’re in what you thought was a previously fictional world. are you fictional now, is all fiction real? those might be some questions you’re considering. and if you have a system, usually you’re given tasks to some ends, which is like. where does the system come from, what does it mean that you’ve come here and not anyone else, can you disobey the system? what does it mean if you can or can’t? if you don’t have a system, you still have to navigate an entirely new way of life and not draw suspicion on yourself. and through it all, you have to contend with the fact that your old life is gone, the things you loved about life are now gone, even your face is different now. so, if your body is different and your environment is different and you’re acting different now, what is it that makes you you? and a number of the transmigration stories i’ve seen are like, transmigrating into a “bad” character, so in the case of a system forcing the mc to do bad actions or the mc choosing to do it for their own reasons, the justifications regarding the actions are interesting, because “it’s what the original would have done, anyways, not me” even though people aren’t static. they can change their minds.
the ship of theseus is about that but amplified. (spoilers up ahead but who cares) because the mc is not the first transmigrator in the character they transmigrate into. will they be a last? what will they sacrifice in order to survive? and the mc has known the original as this really bad person, but the original actually died young. the previous transmigrators have all been playing this character till now, so in that case, where is the “original” big bad villain? and then it plays to the actual idea of the ship of theseus, but in this case referring to the transmigrators inhabiting this body that’s being transmigrated too.
i remember you also liked the memory police by yoko ogawa. is she your favorite author? also which of her books do you recommend reading first (or does it not matter, do you think)? also rip, you and me same boat with writing.
its like 1am so im kinda brain fried so i do not have much to say on ur thoughts abt transmigration but yes that sounds very cool (i got slightly distracted watching critrole -- i think i told u i was on ep 2? i just finished ep 5 i believe. lies down. -- but i saw u mentioned orv in ur tags and had to respond LOL). also i adore the idea of having multiple transmigrators in the same character -- are there past hints of the previous... brains.... in the character? is it like an interaction scenario? or was it like the trope where it’s like “if u dont do xyz bad thing u will die” and then the guy manning the ship (character) dies and then ur mc takes over. i love the idea of like, the.... characters (ugh words are hard).... merging in the bodies & the boundaries between ur entities becoming different -- ie who’s the original character as you’ve said. so honestly super neat idea!!! if u ever write it up pls hmu i’d love to read it.
wrt orv - hmmm i would say it qualifies as transmigration, i would say it definitely counts, but i feel like it’s also... different than other transmigration webnovels i’ve read? although i really haven’t read very many, so it’s hard to put to words i think. as for it being a well crafted story... i mean, like, i’m not necessarily going to argue with that point because i did enjoy it. but also, like, it’s really long. like, i think i had to try to read it three or four times because it was really long and it got kind of boring even though like cool stuff is happening it’s hard to keep track of and you get the sort of awkwardly bland prose that comes with translated webnovels (sorry.) so all in all it took me a hot moment to get through. and like, honestly, the ending is what got me. but i will say, despite yk the length and whatnot i would say it really follows through with its themes on idk stories and interpersonal connections and whatnot and idk. words. anyway. so tldr its long beware, but it does have some cool stuff. if u ever read it, i’d love to hear ur thoughts on it (also bc ive forgotten like half of it LOL).
re: yoko ogawa idt she’s my fav author, altho i don’t think i have one. my first book of hers was revenge, a short story collection, that i read rather recently and im just going thru her stuff. revenge was pretty good, i dont have a lot to say abt it. the memory police was also good, but i think, and this feels like a lot of scifi to me lol, that she had an idea, and it was interesting, and she expressed it, but it didn’t really go far from there. like i was expecting more of an ending, i guess. i think a number of her works are sort of open-ended or ambiguous and it works for some of them (like the diving pool) but i wouldn’t have said so for the memory police or dormitory (another novella in the collection named after the diving pool). i don’t think there’s any particular order you need to read things in, but the diving pool (the novella) is my fav of hers so far lol. altho im gonna read hotel iris soon and am trudging my way thru a few short stories of hers in french.
