Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness I can’t even imagine, or maybe I just don’t want to. Five hundred yards… that’s the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.
It was a difficult schedule on that film, and we had quite a lot of night work scheduled for when Tim’s character escapes from the jail: He was going to run across the length of the field and catch a train that was going by the prison. There was a lot of stuff planned, and schedule-wise, we just couldn’t do that. So this shot, with Andy standing there in the rain, had to be this iconic shot that signified the end of the sequence … because we couldn’t afford to shoot the rest of it, basically!
