there's an episode where sal and ellie have to bring ellie's sister a watermelon for her party in in like a first montage of a timeloop esque manner keep accidentally breaking the watermelon in various ways and keep having to go back to the store... at some point they draw a face on it in the hopes that "if we anthropomorphize it maybe we will care more about it and subconsciously work harder to not drop it."

#imagine if in the 3rd act of a moderately serious tv series a main character turned into a fruit and died. i wish that was it.#shah mac#mailbox

I agree about the overly introspective nazel-gazey autobiographical comics when they are super tryhard but autobio comics is also something that has been done very well and has a context especially in underground comics. I hate ones that start with the topic or theme, or “realization” ones that are all neat with it

oh yeah for sure. a lot of the comics i was thinking abt in that post fall into the autobio world. i have seen a lot of things, but i think the thing that made me want to make that post at that time was i saw a comic that was trying to describe disociation in an artsy way (not their experiences with it, really just what it feels like) but to my eye was pretty clearly made by someone who believed the experience was unique to them or at least that it’s not something that’s experienced by everyone who has ever lived not just mentally ill people.

i think the thing abt writing autobio is to write good autobio you have to have had interesting life experiences and/or meaningful insight/unique pov on common experiences… and since these comics im seeing are by tumblr users and like i don’t mean this in a cruel way at all bc it’s really truly just an age thing, but most people on tumblr have not had interesting life experiences or have unique insight on common experiences bc we’re for the most part all quite young.

another matter is like trying to make something deep or moving instead of trying to make something that’s true to you… I think for the most part if you make something that’s really true to you it will be moving, but I do see a lot of work that seems to be for other people instead of for the artist…

im kind of confused as to what the real person option would be? are you asking if there’s a third person running that blog or?? but no she’s not a real person, she’s the main character in the framing narrative for our project and the lens through which rearview mirror is accessed. the blog is an outlet for us while we work on the project itself and an opportunity to get a head start on believable epitext. it’s run by cricket and myself and we both draw for it. you’re very welcome to treat her as a real person if you want to play toys with us, but she’s just a character. :•)
