@purpleyin / purpleyin.tumblr.com

Hi, I'm Hans (they/them). Spoonie. Demi-bi & polyam. Waves from the UK. I write fanfic, create moodboards, other graphics, fanmixes and on occasion fanvids. I like a good rec, tend to multiship and love decent character/case/team/gen stuffs too. Fannish about so many fandoms.

Third Army, we have been blessed by Sankta Alina!!

1001 suns have been made to send to Netflix, and we want to include you in the project! So, we're collecting messages to go in the nice, big space in the center of each sun. If you're someone who isn't necessarily crafty with origami, or you haven't been able to send any physical post to join in before, this is your chance to take part in our postal campaigns with your own message on one of these!

You can submit a text message and/or your username (no more than 140 characters total) to our form here:

Or for something a bit more personal, you can submit a handwritten message uploaded as a picture to the form instead. The writing needs to be thick, easy to read, and on a white background so we can transfer it onto each sun. If possible, it would help us greatly if the image is a transparent png of your handwritten message so it is even easier to transfer. This can be done with Canva or other photo editing software. The dimensions of your handwritten message should be at maximum 7cm by 3cm.

The deadline for submissions is in 1 week's time - they must reach us by midnight November 5th Pacific Time.

Thank you so much to @purpleyin, who's hard work singlehandedly made this possible!

Portrayed by: Calahan Skogman Book | Show: Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom, and Netflix’s Shadow and Bone

Matthias Helvar is the kind of character you hope that real-world shitty people could be more like. He’s conditioned to believe one thing and fully fights with it, but through communication and love, he realizes that he’s in the wrong and chooses to grow. As a Fjerdan, the last thing he should’ve done was fall in love with a Grisha woman, but that didn’t stop him from giving all he was to protect Nina Zenik. His story should’ve never ended the way it does, but too often, people believe that the ultimate character redemption equates to death. None of the Crows should’ve died. Period.

Matthias Helvar is a complex, well-written character haunted by guilt and unwavering loyalty. The show’s unfortunate cancellation doesn’t let us see what the Six of Crows duology does, but it gives us more of his origin—it shows us the beginning stages of his relationship with Nina, which in turn acts as the catalyst to helping him grow.

"Matthias was dreaming again. Dreaming of her. [...] She was welcoming and perfect in his arms. He kissed her, buried his face in the sweet hollow of her neck. Her curls brushed his cheeks, and he felt that if he could just hold her a little longer, every wound, every hurt, every bad thing would melt away. “Matthias,” she would whisper, his name so soft on her lips. These were the worst dreams, and when he woke, he hated himself almost as much as he hated her. To know that he could betray himself, betray his country again even in sleep, to know that – after everything she’d done – some sick part of him still hungered after her … it was too much."  — Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo

You know, for all the show’s flaws i’ll give them props for getting Wylan so well. Because as you can see by the extremes “baby uwu Wylan team” and the “yandere bloodthirsty Wylan” team, he is way hard to characterize correctly. We are talking about a gay character on a netflix show where he is not the lead, you have to realize how easy it is to screw Wylan up. But, other than the reading reveal (he wouldn’t be that sloppy) he is surprisingly accurate, any difference is more due to circumstance (ex: sure he doesn’t snap at Jesper as much, but 1-Jesper’s approach is different, 2-is not the same interacting with your annoying crush than a guy that already saw you naked)

He really had no right of being this accurate.

I agree that they did a really good job with Wylan’s characterization, but I will argue that the reading scene was still pretty book accurate. In six of crows I believe, there’s a scene where all of the crows are on a balcony and kaz has a book that he uses to spy on people (as a looking glass), and when it is handed to Wylan, he asks Jesper what it says.

In case people hadn't seen and might be interested, there's a mini online convention for some of the Shadow and Bone cast, in part raising money for the charity Winston's Wish.

So far announced is: Cal, Dean, Sujaya and Luke. Luke and Dean's activities are quite soon so ticket sales close soon too (8th and 10th Aug depending on the activity), see details in the third tweet below

Disability and neurodiversity in the Grishaverse

With Disability Pride Month, let’s explore the Grishaverse's disability representation. Leigh Bardugo’s experience as a disabled author gives her a unique perspective in writing disabled characters, resulting in an intersectional cast that includes characters with physical disabilities and neurodivergences.

Kaz Brekker relies on a mobility aid—his infamous crow's head cane—due to a leg injury he sustained as a teenager that left him with a limp and chronic pain. Mobility aid users are usually portrayed as older, meaning Kaz, as a younger character who uses a cane, brings much-needed representation.

Wylan Van Eck has severe dyslexia. As he describes it, letters get mixed up, unlike music, numbers or equations. However, he excels in math, science, music and art. While there are many types of dyslexia, with differing severity, Wylan’s struggles resonate deeply with many dyslexic fans.

Bardugo also confirmed writing Jesper Fahey as having ADHD symptoms. His energetic nature makes him restless and impulsive, potentially contributing to his gambling addiction. He often spins or fidgets with his revolvers and rings, which can be interpreted as stimming. Fans with ADHD can relate to Jesper’s trouble focusing and constant need for stimulation.

Genya Safin suffers from monocular vision due to injuries from a Nichevo'ya attack and wears an eye patch. Her inclusion brings awareness to different types of visual impairments.

David Kostyk is a brilliant scientist and inventor but has trouble navigating social situations, is often quiet and prefers to keep to himself. He has difficulty maintaining eye contact when overwhelmed and expressing his feelings. David is interpreted as neurodivergent by many fans, which provides further representation to the series.

Two characters with prosthetic limbs are Adrik Zhabin and the Darkling. Adrik has a prosthetic arm due to an attack by the Darkling’s Nichevo'ya. Ironically, the Darkling lost his hand as well and now uses a prosthetic. Having two characters like this helps normalize limb differences.

Leigh Bardugo took great care to include neurodivergent and disabled characters in her stories, without them being defined solely by it. They go on adventures, fall in love, make mistakes, save the day—and just happen not to be neurotypical and/or able-bodied.

Because of this, the Grishaverse has some of the best disability representation in the fantasy genre. Not only does this kind of positive representation help similar fans feel seen, it also helps to destigmatize differences, showing we are all human. Happy Disability Pride Month!

NEW! Three letterheads for the Grishaverse Pride postal campaign!

As the start of June approaches, bringing LGBTQ+ Pride Month with it, now is the perfect time to start thinking of what you'd like to tell Netflix about the importance of queer representation in Shadow and Bone!

Has seeing queer characters in the Grishaverse—who get to be out and proud and happy—helped you or people you know? Do you just think it's important to see more diversity in the media? Or do you simply want to say how much you love your favorite queer characters and express your need to have them back on-screen?

Whatever you have in mind to write, we have three new letterheads to make your letter stand out as part of this new postal campaign to #SaveShadowAndBone and greenlight the #SixOfCrowsSpinoff.

Check our choice of designs to print out when you pen your letter:

With each piece of mail sent to Netflix, we build on our movement to show the dedication of our fandom and the persistent demand for Shadow and Bone. Netflix can't ignore physical mail, so make sure to get yours sent soon as a reminder to them that we're still proudly fighting for our shows!

If you can, please take a picture of anything you send and share it on social media using #SaveShadowAndBone and #SixOfCrowsSpinoff so the rest of the Third Army can see it and be inspired by your efforts!
