Backgrounds for my Mononoke parody animatic...which is almost certainly not going to be finished before the movie comes out! T_T

I finished these early June and it feels so good to finally share them. So much the details were cropped in the shots, so I'm glad they see the light of day!

If the spirit of an exorcism sword dies in combat, the mononoke still needs to be cut down. In such extenuating circumstances, would the medicine seller be promoted to a divine status to fulfill that duty?

↓Partial process video below the cut! ↓

Oh my god??? Someone wrote fanfic inspired by my art on Twitter????? O:

Translation: This is a story about Shingi and ☷ inspired by this illustration by Tiffany Hayashi (@purplealmonds ). I'll leave it to your imagination to decide if it's a dream, the past, or the future.

My English translation of the fic and a transcript of the original text are below the cut! As a disclaimer, I am not in no way an expert at translating Japanese, and I took some creative liberties with the text.

EDIT: My translation here absolutely mangled parts of the narrative so I've deleted it. Please refer to this new post (with accompanying illustrations) for a more accurate version!

Do you think Kusuriuri has some kind of connection to Egyptian mythos?

This mostly pertains to Ri-Kusuriuri from the 2007 anime, but I found some influences in Kun-Kusuriuri from the 2024 movie as well.

Kohl makeup resembles the medicine seller's eyeliner. The lines extending from that eyeliner resemble the eyes of Ra and Horus representing the sun (Yang) and moon (Yin) respectively.

That's just scratching the surface. More thoughts below the cut!

Burdened with a growing suspicion that Kitagawa is some sort of ghost.

I would love to hear your thoughts

That is my hunch as well! Unlike the other women in the ooku who have earth or plant based names (Kame aside), Kitagawa, which translates to "North River", is the only one who has a purely water-based name. I wrote up a breakdown of all the name meanings over a month ago here!

If Kitagawa is already completely one with the water, a.k.a. the Karakasa, there is good reason to believe that she is already dead. I believe that in the movie synopsis they talk about kind of yet-to-be-described 'tragedy' that happened right before Kame and Asa were hired.

More thoughts beneath the cut. It's my thoughts based on released trailers, but potential spoiler warnings ahead.
