i think it is very depressing that like every aesthetic people try to emulate are of people doing things but they themselves are incapable of being somebody that does things… the mall goth 2005 aesthetic revived in 2022 but nobody goes to the mall to be annoying and weird and nobody lets themselves be cringe… the cottagecore aesthetic but nobody knows how to raise gardens or live self sufficiently … the dark academia aesthetic but nobody actually reads books…. The obsession of looking like you are a type of person who does something without actually doing anything … the Instagram effect

Since the whole thing with NaNoWriMo has gone down, I've noticed that one of their former sponsors, Ellipsus, has cut contact with NaNoWriMo because they do not support their stance on AI; I didn't know what Ellipsus was, but upon further research I've found that they are a writing platform that works a lot like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, only with a heavier leaning on the story-writing aspect and connecting with other writers - and they also completely denounce any use of AI, both in the writing process itself and in the use of their platform. I really appreciate that.

Since this is the case (and since I've noticed Google has begun implementing more AI into their software), I've decided to give Ellipsus a try to see if it's a good alternative to Google Docs (my main writing platform). It's completely free and so far, I've found it simple to use (although it is pretty minimal in its features), and I really like the look of it.

I figured I'd spread the word about this platform in case any of you writers would want to give it a try, and if you do, let me know how you like it!

Another huge point in their favor: their support team is currently SUPER responsive. I had two major qualms with the site when I started exploring it as a Gdocs replacement: 1) no way to login with a password, they have to send you a code every time which is... honestly annoying and 2) no way to download your documents with collaborators/editors comments intact. You can only merge everything into your main document and download as a PDF or copy it in rich text or HTML format. Which makes me nervous to not be able to have hard copies of these things.

Here is what I was told by support within literally an hour of sending the email: they're working on the password thing and if people go and upvote it as a feature they want, it will bump it higher up the list. And after my query about downloading documents, I was again responded to within like... an hour with the response that they are definitely working on that as well because they're part of the "local-first" software movement, which means they believe you have the right to exit the software and take all your data with you.

They also have a really nice option to offer feedback. You can offer your own ideas as well as upvote and add comments to other people's ideas. They then use that to see what the userbase wants and thus what they should work on next.

It really seems like they're trying to do the right thing by their users, which I really appreciate. I look forward to seeing what's next for them!
