Voltron Season 7 Spoilers
Quick question: Who the hickity heck thought it was acceptable to murder Adam instantly after all of the hype?
This is not okay on so many levels? From advertisement and promotion I expected Shiro to at least react and be like “oh no my fiance is dead and i am sad” or at least for any closure to come to “Hey I almost married this man and he is dead” but nope its just “I am so sorry” to this random guy. In the context of the show, all we can gather is that Adam was a teacher at the Garrison who did not want Shiro to leave for the mission. They were close because they called each other by name. Adam was one of the best pilots. The end.
Saying Shiro and Adam were together outside of the show itself is great and it is representation but it has the same effect as JK Rowling saying Dumbledore was gay. Yay! Great! But it is easy to say that without committing.
Just saying something is true without actually adding it to the canon of your universe is a cheap and dirty tactic to attract a queer audience to your show.
Adam and Shiro do not even interact in any scene other than the flashback.
Maybe I am getting ahead of myself and there is more to come in season 8, but as it stands it looks like a cheap and awful tactic to promise representation and advertise it everywhere (such as the thumbnails currently being displayed on netflix) and then just kill off one of the characters so you can avoid actually committing.
Obviously this does not take away from my enjoyment of the show and it is a beautiful and well executed story regardless. The characters are likable and enjoyable regardless of their relationships or sexualities. In then end this is a story about mecha robots righting aliens. And in that regard, it is awesome! Watching characters like, for example, Keith mature throughout the seasons is so awesome to watch! I love the different planets and species they meet. They are all well designed and thought out and generally entertaining to watch! The filler episode are always hilarious and I cannot praise the visuals enough.
Honestly, if there was not this small “real life confirmation” to “what I am being shown in the show” discrepancy I would easily call this my favorite show. The problems with the advertisement are simply too glaring to allow me to enjoy it completely, however. I spent this whole season on the edge of my seat waiting for Shiro and Adam to reunite or any mention of representation. This made it infuriatingly hard to slow down and appreciate what was actually happening. They made it to Earth! Kolivan is alive! Keith called Krolia mom! Lance, Pidge, and Hunk all got to meet their families, and Earth survived the attack! The Fire of Purification might be gone, and I am 90% sure Zethrid and Ezor are a couple. Everyone voted to save another on the game show! Pouty angsty Lotor! So many wonderful things!
I am sure I will love this season when I rewatch it, now that I will not be holding my breath waiting for the representation. I am still upset that they just killed Adam off without even letting them interact, though.
It is possible he survived the crash and is with the rebels and will be seen in season 8, but for now all we can do is wait and try not to judge this show and its marketing team until it is complete.
