The spiderverse movies really hate spiderwomen

Gwen Stacy: she’s the only female character who actually has a coherent well written storyline, but that was only the case in the second movie, the first movie treated her like a stereotype, I love what they had for her in the second movie but I still have some issues with it too because so many aspects of her story is tied way too close to miles which doesn’t sit with me, the intro monologue was literally her just talking about him and how she relates to him, not about herself, and that’s just one of the things at the top of my head because I can’t talk about that in this post so I’ll save it for another one just for her. Overall she’s fine, not good, not great just fine. The one thing I wholeheartedly hate is how they messed up all of her relationships with the women in her life but I’ll talk about that later

Peni Parker: despite being part of the main cast in the first movie, the second movie had her for literally 2 seconds and she had one line, which was just her calling a boy

Jess drew: I have so many issues here, first Jess is the OG spiderwoman and here in the movies they undermined that so much. We have no actual canon information of her backstory or background, no relationship of her own except for an unnamed, unshown husband and a baby that’s not even born yet. She’s nothing like her comics when it comes to her character, where are her wings, where are her bioelectricity, why is her theme all about a motorcycle. She doesn’t even have a spider -my name is- intro, We barely know anything about her even if she’s arguably in the main cast and the third spider to show up. I feel like they set her up in the trailer for something way bigger than what they had her do in the movie and it pisses me off so much

Margo kess: she’s also very vague, we still don’t know anything about her and fans (me included) are literary collecting scarps to discover any information about her story

Mayday Parker: a literal baby who can’t do much for the plot

Silk, spider zero, anya, Julia, and so many others: literally nonexistent

Not to mention this movie barely passes the bechdel test.

Almost all the background female characters are there for their relationship to men, either familial: Rio, aunt may, gabriella, or romantic: Mary jane, gayatri.

The only ones’ who’s existing relationship is toward a woman are the Mary janes and wow their characterisation in this movie is awful, they made them look so bad, like they were horrible friends to Gwen to the point she had to make her own band.

And even between the main female characters there’s literally barely any interaction. The only two teenage girls in the cast don’t even look in each other’s direction let alone say a single word. Margo’s only interaction is with miles and AI tinkerbell, all of gwen’s friends are boys, which is just so untrue in the comics, Jess and gwen are the only actually existing relationship between the women in this movie and even that is so underdeveloped and criticised, in comparison to Peter and miles in the first movie.

And all this is just me talking about the canon, in universe aspects.

I didn’t mention how the fandom treats these characters, which is horrendous, especially when you compare how they talk about the male characters.

How Gwen, a 16 year old vulnerable traumatised homeless girl, is treated like the devil and a monster worse than the guy who made her do what she did, Jess is so villainised it’s so crazy people are saying they want her baby to die, and only then do they even mention her even though she’s allegedly part of the main cast.

Margo is almost only brought up as a love interest for miles or to pit her against Gwen, because isn’t it so good when the only girls in the movie hate each for a man.

And that’s only when people talk about them because they rarely do. There are barely any content for them and when people complain about that, others call them crazy.

the hostility in these notes is interesting. especially considering the only women in the cast with significant time spent onscreen/speaking lines across two thirds of this trilogy are The Mother and The Love Interest?
