could this be,,, ahahahaha, th,, the return of the jedi?? ahahaha (no but really finn should be a jedi)

not to be ~emotional~ but I’ve been in an art rut lately and honestly just,,, feeling down in general but I’m pretty proud of this,, it felt good to create again even if it meant pulling an all nighter.

(( side note I didn’t really like TLJ and ROS but I love TFA and the potential each character had. the head cannon interactions i have stored in my brain of them just make me love them a whole lot :,)) ))

imagine creating a character as fucking excellent as finn, a character trained literally from birth to be part of a violent fascist regime, who is so good and brave and compassionate and fucking multifaceted that he leaves the space nazis that are all he knows, a character who finally gets his chance to run away and live a life he never even had a chance to dream of having, and who literally returns to the place he fears most to save his friend, a character who is brave and funny and emblematic of the ideals of your franchise of hope and choice.... IMAGINE creating that character and then not focusing on him despite setting him up as a lead in the first film, not developing his storyline in a way that makes sense, not giving his character the fucking respect and care he deserves? could NOT be me lmao... would laugh but am too busy fuming! try again later

everyone’s been saying it but yeah, finn really should have been the main character of the sequel trilogy. out of the new trio he is by far the freshest character, not being pre-made to fit the derivative ‘protagonist that came from a shitty desert planet and has crazy strong force abilities’ role or the ‘charming brash pilot’ role, but being something entirely unique instead: a former stormtrooper who was brainwashed and raised under the first order’s command yet still could never accept this role or agree with the regime he was under his entire life, deserting it at the first chance he got and joining the rebellion shortly after.

on a textual level, having a character with this direct link tying him with the villains as the focal point of the series would have been great. not only would it have served to give us more insight as to how life under this regime is like but would have also added a bigger level of personal stakes to it, as finn would have more direct reasons than most to fight the first order. it also would have made him a great foil to kylo’s villain, as finn’s journey of ‘growing up with the first order and leaving them as an adult’ is pretty much in direct contrast to kylo’s.

on a meta level, if the intention of the sequel trilogy really was to ‘subvert expetsrions’, having a former stormtrooper as the main hero and having that former identity be explored as one of his most important characteristics would have had a big impact when you consider that stormtroopers were always considered to be incompetent cannon fodder in pop media and even among fans.

that’s not to say that there’s anything necessarily wrong with rey’s character (as i like her a lot myself) but it is clear to me that this trilogy should not have been hers, because no matter how you look at it, the story of a black man coming to rebel against the repressive system that made him a child soldier and dominated his entire life is definitely more relevant and more original for the star wars canon than being a young person from a shitty desert planet who has great force abilities and mysterious ancestry
