Hockey was a hard hitting sport and you knew that. You knew to expect the occasional bruise and maybe a missing tooth, but still you worried and it was that worry that had you biting your lip tightly as you watched your boyfriend skate around the ice in a face paced, back and forth game against St. Louis. 

You didn’t want to do it. You didn’t want to end things with Tyson. Not when he looked so happy and you had felt the same not even two weeks earlier.

But things weren’t working out anymore. Schedules didn’t match up and you were at different points in your life.

You just wished he hadn’t taken you out to dinner the night you decided to end things.

The look on his face when you started explaining all the reasons you couldn’t be with him nearly killed you. You knew it would hurt, but god the pain in his eyes was nearly enough to have you taking back all your words.

Nearly.

But you said what needed. The relationship was over, dead, done, gone. And before he could say anything else you were up and out of your seat, leaving Tyson behind before the waiter returned so he couldn’t follow after you.

But, what was done, was done.

“Am I holding her right?” Tyson asked, nerves clear in his tone while you watched on with adoration in your eyes. It was the off season, and you had took Tyson to your hometown to introduce him to your family. Though, you would have done it sooner if it meant you got to see him with your newborn niece.

“Yeah, support the neck just like that.” You murmured, unable to tear your gaze from the newborn resting in your boyfriend’s arms. He glanced up at you then, a broad grin on his face, clearly proud of himself for getting it right.

“When can we get one?” He asked, a little jokingly and a little seriously. You shook your head, though it took a substantial effort to convince yourself that now wasn’t the best time for a baby. Even if Tyson was the only one you’d ever want to have a family with.

“Why don’t you just keep practicing holding her for a few more years.”

“I’m worried about you.”

“Tys, I’m fine.” You tried to convince your boyfriend. He didn’t believe you, which was probably for good reason, because you could probably count on both hands the amount of hours you slept in the past two days. Work was kicking your ass, and as much as you needed sleep, you needed to finish the project more.

“Please just come to bed.” He pleaded, massaging your shoulders as you sat at the kitchen table. You sighed, finishing the sentence you were typing before shutting your laptop. Tyson grinned in victory, and the moment you stood he swept you into his arms.

“I’m going to have to wake up early to finish.” You reasoned, but Tyson just shook his head defiantly. You pouted, and Tyson pecked your lips repeatedly until you were smiling.

“Tomorrow, we’re sleeping in.”

“How long was I alseep?”

You grinned at your boyfriend as he stirred awake, nuzzling his head further into the crook of your neck.

“You slept through the whole movie.” You giggled as his slight scruff tickled the skin of your neck. He hummed tiredly, and you reached a hand up to brush through his curls.

“‘M sorry.” He mumbled, nearly incoherent. You shook your head, unable to wipe the smile off your face if you tried.

“I told you that you didn’t have to stay awake, you could have gone to bed after your flight.” You assured him, referencing the five day roadie he had just been on. The games and the flight took it out of him, but despite being so exhausted he insisted on staying awake to watch the movie with you.

“Wanted to be with you.” He was already drifting back to sleep, you could tell from the way he was mumbling and tugging you closer, and you scratched at his scalp to thank him for his sweetness.

And as he fell back asleep, you felt as if you were on top of the world with the love of your life.

“I can do this. It’s just a question. It’s just dinner.” Tyson mumbled to himself, his gaze following you as you slipped into the kitchen for a moment of air away from the kickback. He was trying to talk himself up, his words not meant for anyone else’s ears, but he was never a subtle guy, so JT picked up on him.
