Houses in the shitamachi (the traditional eastern part of Tokyo) put posters on their front doors to announce / welcome the new year. Each machi or neighbourhood has its own design, always depicting the zodiac sign for that year. This particular monkey is travelling in the ship of the seven lucky gods, called takarabune (宝船) or “treasure ship.” Read more here.
