-Ruins of Khevsur Shrines-
Nestled in the Caucasus Mountains, Khevsur religious practices were a mix of abrahamic and 'pagan' rituals. Greek Orthodox by title, they prayed alongside Muslims at sites that blended animistic, loci-based traditions with Christian iconography. These manifested in three typologies; jvari 'cross', khati 'icon' or salotsavi 'sanctuary' — this population was deported by the Soviets in the mid 1940's. (photos c.1977)
