how do you think Drift views organics?

Avatar

Whenever I think about how a character might view organics, I think about the ant analogy.

Ants objectively have some semblance of a society -- they build structures, they work in tandem with one another, they each have specific roles that they operate within. But we can't communicate with ants. If you asked someone if an ant has sentience, they'd probably say "no". And when said ants build their hill too close to our homes? When they infest a pantry and get into our food? We kill them off, because now they pose a health threat to us. Regardless of if the ants were there first. Because what does it matter? Ants live such tiny, short lives anyhow.

I can't remember who it was, but someone once compared Megatron's view of organics to a human's view of ants. And I think that's incredibly spot-on. What might Drift's view of organics be? Well initially, it was probably not very different from Megatron's -- he might not have the same outright animosity toward organics that Megatron does, but Drift is a very "me and mine" person. His concern, on a day-to-day basis, is protecting those he cares about against anything that could harm them, and if organics pose a threat, so be it. He's not very successful at protecting people, which is probably what's feeding into it being such a profound focus for him.

But Drift is also someone who, at his core, wants things to be better for everyone. He wanted the war to be fought, so it could end, so they could better society for all of Cybertron. It's very much so the stance of someone who's keenly aware of the ins and outs of oppression, and knows how to recognize it, even when it's coming from his own side. I think he definitely opposed the settling and conquering of all these organic planets as things continued to escalate -- at first because he couldn't see how it was helping their fight against the enemy who sought to restore the old order, and later because he could recognize that they were becoming that old order. Hell, paired with us knowing he was notoriously insubordinate, said hypothetical opposition was what might've caused the schism between him and the Conclave that led to Deadlock being assigned second to Turmoil, even after we're shown that he once stood beside the likes of Megatron and Starscream.

I suspect his time working as a neutral bounty hunter after leaving the Decepticons was fairly eye-opening and confirmed a lot of his suspicions that he was harboring about organics; namely that they're not inherently inferior in any way. Canonically, most of the people Drift was making deals with were organics. He ends up being versed in a lot of different cultures, which even comes up in Lost Light.

At the end of the day, I think he sees the "organics vs mechanicals" argument as a convenient excuse -- a balm to the conscience of the weak who don't want to admit they're perpetuating the very harm that they hypocritically claim to be fighting against.

To celebrate this blog hitting 1k follows, here's a list of Drift facts I keep in my writing reference folder, because I'm fairly assuming this is the content you're all here for considering I talk about little else.

Did you know...?

- Drift joined the Autobots a mere 2 years before the end of the war. He never underwent the Rite of Autobrand, with his status as an Autobot being tied to a vaguely named "Reintegration Act" (of which he is the only beneficiary). His Autobot status is shown to be revokable without court or trial. (MTMTE)

- Deadlock's stated reason for fighting so hard in the war was to see the war end quickly, so that everyone could live in the fair world without fear or pain that the Cause promised would come after. He was a whole-hearted believer in the original Decepticon Cause.(Spotlight Drift [Director's Edition])

- Drift consequently left the Decepticons when he realized the war would not end unless the Decepticons were stopped. (Spotlight Drift [Director's Edition])

- Drift is a reluctant Autobot. He doesn't believe either the Decepticons or the Autobots "have it right". (Spotlight Drift [Director's Edition])

- Only Autobot High Command is aware of Drift's identity as Deadlock. Everyone else just knows he's an ex-Decepticon, but nothing more than that. (Exrid #12)

okay okay so I re read the Drift mini series and was like ‘haha what if Drift had more time there and we got to see the behind the scenes of his growth in Crystal City and a bit more depth on his apprenticeship w Wing’ then then I was like WAIT

then I was thinking of a whole AU where Drift spent a few lifetimes there and conjuxed Wing n stuff and we get to really see his growth on coming to love life again and what it really means to love and be loved. All The good stuff.

But of course the a n g s t is still necessary so eventually Dirft’s location is found out by Lockdown, and ya know the rest. But idk I love this pairing and I feel like Wing left such a monumental impact on Drift’s persona, I rly wish we could’ve seen more of him :’)

ANYWAY yeah Drift and Wing hold a special place in my heart ✨
