ARO POV
"Alright your background check is complete," Leah said taking my hand. I scanned through her mind relaxing some when they found out nothing about us vampires.
"We would like to adopt a little girl," my wife, Sulpicia said.
"Of course," she said.
"Which one has been here the longest?" she asked.
"Love," I chuckled.
"Don't you want to give someone a home? Someone who has been waiting their whole life to have a mommy and a daddy?" my wife looked up at me.
"Yes my love." I nodded.
"We have one girl, her name is Izzy Peirson," She said and got out a file. She opened it up and set out a picture of a young girl.
"She's six years old. Her parents died in a car crash and her family wasn't suitable to take her in. She's been with us since she was three. She's been in four foster homes. She's a special child looking for the right family."
"What's the matter with her?" Sulpicia asked, sadness in her eyes.
"She has schizophrenia, severe hallucinations. She's on medications now but they don't help much. She is in her own private room because she will wake in the middle of the night screaming," Leah looked down.
"We will adopt her," Sulpicia said with authority.
"Are you sure Sulpicia? We don't know anything about taking care of someone with mental health issues," I said shocked by her words.
"Yes Aro, I'm sure. We will give her a home. I'll be her mommy, and you'll be her daddy. We will help her." she said.
I squeezed her hand gently. "Yes my love," I told her looking nervous.
Leah had a small smile on her face. "Come on let's go meet her," she said.
The two of us stood as she led us to a playroom. There she stood, the young girl from the photo. She was batting at the air
"Leah... she's doing it again," a boy around Izzy's age tugged on Leah's pant leg.
Leah rushed over to her taking her to her chest. "Hey hey hey... shhhh, it's not real, it's not real," she said comforting the young child. She got a pill out of her purse and gave some water.
"Make it go away. I don't wanna see her," the young girl cried.
"I know Izzy I know take the pill. It'll help soon.
The young girl took the pill in her hands taking it shakily.
Leah picked her up and took her out of the play room and into the private room where we were. "Is it over?" Leah asked.
Izzy peaked her head out from her chest. "Y-yes," she peeped out.
"Good," she set her down. "I have someone I want you to meet. You're getting adopted today. These lovely people Aro and Sulpicia are going to adopt you. They are going to be your new mommy and daddy," she said touching the girl's hair.
"They will?" she looked up at her with big eyes. "They wont take me back here after a few weeks will they?" she asked.
Sulpicia walked over kneeling down touching her cheeks. "Never ever. You're gonna come home with us and you're going to have a nice big room with lots and lots of toys," she said.
"I will?" Izzy asked.
"Yes," Sulpicia said touching her cheek.
"W-will you make my visions go away," she asked her.
Sulpicia hesitated to answer. "Momma is going to do everything she possibly can to make them go away babygirl," she said.
As soon as she said that Izzy clung onto her tightly. "Mom," Izzy said.
"Yes little one. Now lets go meet your new daddy," she said and took hand leading her over to me.
The small girl looked up at me nervously. I knelt down to her height. "Hi baby girl. My name is Aro. I'm your new daddy," I said.
Izzy smiled up at the two of us. I touched her cheek gently wanting to scan her mind. See what she sees. Her visions. But her mind was completely blank, I've never seen anything like it before. I dropped my hand and went to pick her up. She smiled widely as I picked her up.
"We will go sign paperwork now then I will have the nurse go over the medications with you," Leah said. "I'm glad you decided to adopt her. She needs a family," Leah said with a gentle smile.
"It's what she deserves," I nodded.
Izzy held onto me tightly as we walked back into Leah's office.

Caius’s Mate
Chapter Eleven Part 1
1,879 words
The paramedics rushed me into the hospital. “We have a 16 year old girl, fractured left ulna, laceration on the back of the head. Concussion. We started an IV and gave her O negative blood,” Amanda told the doctor.
“What happened to her?” The doctor asked.
Alec spoke, “I don’t know, I found her in the room bleeding. She knows my name but she doesn’t remember anything else,” he spoke.
They brought me to a room. For a short period of time he examined me. “What’s your name sweetie?” he asked
“Izzy,” I whispered.
“What’s your pain at 0-10?” he asked
“Eight,” I told him
“5mg of morphine sulfate. Okay, I want a full body CT, a ultrasound of the abdomen and an X-ray of her left arm and wrist,”
A nurse came over, “This is going to help you with your pain okay?” she said and injected something into my IV.
Almost instantaneously my pain went away. I closed my eyes and focused on my breathing.
“Where’s her parents?” the doctor spoke.
“Deceased,” he sighed.
“Is there anyone to call?” he asked.
“He is already on his way,” Alec spoke.
“Our nurse will show you to the waiting room okay?” the doctor said.
“No… No I want him with me,” I mumbled.
“I’m sorry, he can’t come with you,” he said. “Once all the scans are done bring her to ICU,” he spoke. We were moving again.
Alec squeezed my hand. “You’re going to be okay Izzy, I’ll see you when you are done okay?’ he said kissing my forehead.
"Okay,” I whispered. His hand left mine. I began to cry once again. I was terrified. I didn’t want him to leave.
They brought me to a dark room. “Okay Izzy, were going to x-ray your arm now,” The lady said. “I’m Meredith I’m going to be by your side the whole time Okay?”
I nodded.
The radiologist came over and set it up taking 6 pictures of my arm.
“Izzy when is your birthday?” Meredith asked.
“I don’t remember,” I whispered.
“It’s okay,” she paused.
“I’m going to take you to CT now,” she said pushing me.
Things started to fade. The last thing I remember was closing my eyes.
.
.
.
I saw a bright light. The closer I got to it, the brighter the room had become. I gasped for air shooting upright. I woke up in the middle of a beautiful forest against a tall cherry blossom tree. Pink petals all around me. It was a beautiful site. There were all sorts of trees and plants around me. Flower petals of all sorts of colors surrounded the entire forest. Sun shown down everywhere. I took a deep breath in and out. “Fresh air,” My hair was braided down my back. Something was in my hair at the top of my head. I pulled it off and it was a tiara. It was the sparkliest tiara I have ever seen. The diamonds glittered as the sun reflected off of them. It was shaped as snowflakes. This was the utmost beautiful thing I have ever worn in my entire life.
The dress I was wearing was a long white gown with long sleeves of lace. It was so comfortable. The slip of the dress was silk, the outside layer was all lace. It went down way past my feet and flowed behind me as a tail. The dress reminded me of a wedding gown, but not as elaborate.
I got up curious of what was around me. I walked down the middle, in between the trees. Something fell from the sky. I held my hand out touching it. Snow. It was snowing. A smile went across my face. I laughed. Am I finally free. Free from everyone. I can finally be with my mom.
I looked around and I saw a black figure about 100 yards away. I walked towards it. Soon the figure became clear. MOM!
I ran to her hugging her. “Mom,” I held onto her.
“Hi baby,” she said holding onto me.
“Mom I’m so sorry this is all my fault that you are gone,” I cried into her.
“I’m very much alive here,” she said rubbing my back.
“I can stay with you right? Please?” I looked up at her.
“Baby, you cant. People are waiting for you. Caius and Alec. They care for you very very much. You can’t leave them,” she touched my cheek.
“I held onto her. Mom I love you,” I whispered.
Very soon I was being pulled away from her. “Mom… Mom!!” I cried trying to reach her but she kept slipping away from me. Soon she was gone. Everything was gone. The forest, the snow, my mom. Gone. Everything went black.
.
.
.
I opened my eyes looking up at the ceiling. I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
“We have a pulse,” someone said.
A lady leaned down to my ear. She had black silky hair. “Welcome back Izzy,”
I looked up at her confused. “W-what happened?”
“You’re okay now,” she said.
The doctor yelled. “I want those screenings done now!”
I was being rushed away. “What’s going on? What happened?”
“Your heart stopped. For fifteen minutes,” she said.
“What? I died?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said squeezing my hand.
“How?”
“You’ve been through a lot. Your body went into shock and your heart stopped. They wanted to call it but you’re strong so I kept at it,” she said.
“You saved my life?” my eyes widened.
“Yes,” she squeezed my hand.
I looked up at her in shock.
It took an half an hour to do the CT, and ultrasound. Finally I was put in a room.
I heard a man’s voice. “I have to see her,”
“You can’t see her, she isn’t stable,” a woman said.
“I need to see her,” his voice got louder.
“You can’t,” she sighed.
“Caius let the doctors work on her. Trust them,” he said.
“Can I at least get an update on her? Please. She means the world to me,” he said.
“I can’t you’re not immediate family,” she sighs. “I can’t tell you anything,” she explained.
“Look, we’re her only family she’s got. Her mother just died. We are the only ones who are left,” the man said, very angry.
I tried to sit up. “Hey hey,” a nurse came over to me. “You need to stay laying down,” she said. “The doctor will be in as soon as the results come back.”
“Where’s Alec?” I asked. “I want him,”
“You can’t have anyone back here at the moment,” she said.
“Bring him now!” I yelled sitting up and tried to pull the wires off of me.
“Honey… Izzy… you need to calm down,” she held my hand still.
“Please just bring him back,” I looked at her. “I want him here. Please,”
She sighs. “What’s his name?”
“Alec,” I whispered.
“Last name?”
“I don’t remember,” I looked down.
She walked out of the room. I closed my eyes trying to stay calm.
A few moments pass. “Here she is,”
I opened to my eyes to see Alec and another man enter the room. They both rushed to my side. Alec grabbed my hand. “Are you okay?”
I nodded holding onto his hand.
The man next to Alec grabbed my face. “Baby are you okay?”
I looked up at him. “Who are you?” I asked.
“Who am I?” he asked concerned.
“Caius, she is having some memory loss,” Alec spoke.
Caius kissed my head, “Baby, it’s me,”
“I-I don’t know you,” I whispered looking up at him. There was pain and sorrow showing in his eyes.
“Give her some time,” Alec said putting his hand on his back.
“What happened to her Alec,” he asked.
“I don’t know. I just found her like this and I called 911,” Alec shook his head.
There was a knock on the glass door then the doctor came in.
“You still hanging in there Izzy?” the doctor asked.
“Uhm I think so,” I said.
“Who’s here with you today?” he asked.
“Alec and….” I looked up at the man standing next to me.
“Caius,” he spoke.
“Alec and Caius,”
The doctor spoke, “I’m Dr. Hawkins. You’re one hell of a strong girl Izzy,”
I nodded and looked down.
“Why is she in ICU?” Caius spoke.
“She’s not stable. Her heart gave out earlier when they were taking her to the CT. Which brings me to the fact that she needs life saving surgery. She’s internally bleeding in her stomach. We need to remove the spleen and patch up her liver. She has a an intracerebral hemorrhage. Meaning that she is bleeding inside her brain. She’s lost a lot of blood– if we can stop the bleeding she has a high rate of survival. Her left ulna snapped in half and we will need to operate and fix that as well.”
“What do you mean ‘if we can stop it’ you’ll be able to stop it. Right?” Caius asked.
“It’s not just in one spot that’s the problem,” he said and brought up the CT scan results. “It’s in three places, which makes it difficult. When… and if she wakes up she will most likely have severe memory problems.”
“Stop talking about me as if I’m not here,” I glared.
“Izzy, you’re dying and if you don’t have this operation, you will die,” he said, looking me in the eye.
“Then do the operation then. Save her life,” Caius spoke very clearly.
“Okay. I’ll bring the consent paperwork and the nurse will come prep you for surgery,” he said and left the room. “Prep OR 2,” he yelled as soon as he left the room.
I looked up at the ceiling scared. I tried to fight off the tears.
“Izzy, you’re going to be okay. We will be right here when you get back okay?” Caius kissed my forehead. “Don’t be scared okay?” he said wiping my tears.
“What if I die?”
“You’re not going to die Izzy. You’re so strong,” he whispered.
“You better be right,” I looked up at him.
The nurse came in. She had a few things in her hand. She hooked up another blood bag and then handed Alec some paperwork.
“Okay I’m going to take you to the OR,” she said.
I nodded and looked at Alec. “We will be right here when you are done,” he said.
I nodded and closed my eyes, nervous. I kept my eyes closed until we got into a cold room. I opened my eyes looking around the OR.

Caius’s Mate Chapter Ten
I woke up with a yawn. I curled on my side. My eyes drooping close. I took a deep breath and yawned again. What time was it? I looked over at the by the door. 11:30. Sun seeped through the curtains. 11:30 AM. There was a note on the bedside table labeled Izzy. I picked it up and read it.
Good morning Izzy, I hoped you slept well. Meet me in the west wing at the top of the stairs at 12:00 I have something for you. Have a wonderful day.
Caius
I looked around the room taking it in. It was much larger than my bedroom. The walls were painted grey. There were a few paintings on the wall. The one that stuck out to me most was the one was of Aro another man and Caius sitting on the thrones.
There was a dresser across from the bed. My walking stick was leaning against it. There was also a pair of clothes on top of the dresser. I wonder if those were for me. I threw the dark grey covers off of me then wobbled over to the dresser, using the bed for support. I grabbed the clothes and unfolded them. Yes they were mine. I grabbed them and the walking stick and tried to find the bathroom. The bathroom was at the back of the room. I entered the bathroom and sat on the closed toilet to rest my legs. It was still really hard to walk with or without the walking stick. I guess I just need more time to recover from the coma.
After I felt like I could stand for more than a few minutes I grabbed the shirt that Caius left for me. It was black, shorter in the front and longer in the back. I already had a bra on because I forgot to take it off before I fell asleep. Caius also gave me a black pair of leggings. I sat back down on the toilet and put on the leggings. I stood up and held onto the counter. Do you think Caius would mind you using his toothbrush? Nah I don't think he would.
I turned on the water and ran the toothbrush under the sink and then put toothpaste on it and brushed my teeth for two minutes. I spit it out and used the mouthwash that was also on the counter. I left the water running and grabbed a small hand towel that was above the toilet. I placed the towel under the running water and soaked it, then I washed my face. I headed my way out to where Caius wanted to meet me.
I waited by the stairwell leaning against the railing. I wonder what Caius has for me? Maybe he will let me go home? I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings. I kept my eyes closed waiting for Caius to come.
I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Izzy?"
My eyes fluttered open. "Hi."
He chuckled. "Did I catch you off guard?" he asked.
"No, I was just thinking," I replied.
"Like?"
"Nothing, just thinking."
"Did you get the note?" he asked.
"If I didn't I wouldn't be standing here? Would I?"
"That's true," he took my hand.
I chuckled a bit thinking once again.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Oh. Uhm. I used you toothbrush this morning. I hope you didn't mind," I struggled to keep a straight face.
He laughed a bit, "It's okay dear," he down at me. He was so charming. He gently brushed my cheek with the back of his hand.
We locked eyes for a moment. "Oh yes. I have something for you."
"Like what?" I asked quietly.
"I talked to Aro this morning an-"
I cut him off. "Do I get to go home?"
He sighed and looked down. "You can't go home. Ever. You know that dear, right?"
I looked down and nodded. "Yes. I've been told that several times now," I said. The tone of my voice changed. Sadness seeping through.
He gently grabbed my chin, making me look up at him. "Don't be sad."
"Do you even know how hard it is? To be taken away from your family. You can't ever see them again? Do you even know how heartbreaking that is?" I painfully said. "I miss my mom. I miss my friends. They died. Do you even know how hard that is? Living with that guilt?" tears filled my eyes, threatening to spill.
"I-I don't," he sighed.
"Then how can you say 'don't be sad.' It's a horrible feeling to feel," I shook my head.
"Izzy. I'm sorry," he lowered his voice then pulled me into a hug. "It's going to be okay, I promise."
"Caius, I'm going to back to your room," I pulled away from him.
"I still have something for you," he mentioned.
"I don't care," I said.
"I know it's not as good as going home. But I promise it will make your day," he said.
"I doubt it," I sighed.
"You can call your mom," he sighed. "But your phone calls must be monitored by one of us."
"I called my mom when I was at the hospital. Many times," I bit my lip. "When no one was around."
"Does anyone know that? Does she know about us?" he asked becoming concerned.
"No... but-"
"But what?" he asked seeming stressed.
"N-nothing," I said under my breath.
"Izzy you have to tell me," he sighed.
"She-she knows where I am at. She...uhm... Is trying to find me," I croaked out.
"Do you know where she is now?" he asked.
"No. The last time I talked to her was at the hospital," I looked down, avoiding eye contact with him.
"She could very well be in danger," he said.
"I told her not to go on the tour," I looked away.
"She could still very well be in danger. It's dangerous. We know everyone who tried and looks for us. If she even remotely saying who she is looking for. Aro could very well have-"
"Have what?" I looked up.
"Been killed. By one of us."
"I need to call her right now. I have to make sure she is okay!" I gasped.
He handed me his phone. "Call now."
I dialed her number. No answer, so I left a message, "Mom please call back. I need to know if you're okay. I love you." I hung up.
"I can't get a hold of her," I looked down.
I tried five more times. No answer.
"Damn it mom answer," I whispered to myself.
"Keep trying. I'm going to talk to Aro and see..."
"If they killed her," I finished his sentence.
He nodded. "Go back to my room. Just keep trying," he kissed the top of my head.
I nodded and headed back to his room.
Every time I called there was no answer. I must have called her over 20 times. I kept calling for at least 30 minutes. Mom just tell me you are okay. Please. Please call back. I laid on the bed, stressed out. What's taking Caius so long?
I finally stopped calling after the 30th time. I just laid there a pillow over my face. What if she is dead? How would I be able to live with myself. It would all be my fault. "Why did I tell you mom," I said into the pillow.
I heard the door open.
"Izzy we have to talk," he said with a low, sympathetic tone.
Caius’s Mate Chapter Eight
Two weeks had passed and I was just barely able to make it to the bathroom on my own. Derek had moved shifts so I had a new physical therapist and he wasn't -- encouraging.
Jonathan was my nurse today he was super kind. He came in with some papers handed it to me. "No more ensure drinks! We're going to try some real food today," he said enthusiastically.
"Hell yea!" I said taking the menu.
"Alright. No solids or hard food. Think mashed potatoes... ice cream. Soup... beans --"
"Can I have some tomato soup and a milkshake... or some mashed potatoes and gravy?"
"How about mashed potatoes and gravy and if you can keep it down a milkshake?" He said.
"Sounds perfect," I said and smiled looking at the clock. Well my visitors are late.
I looked up at the ceiling. And heard a knock on the door. It was a girl I never had met before.
"Hi.." she said smiling coming in.
I looked at her curiously. "Who are you?" She asks.
"Im Jane. Im Alec's sister ," she said. "He talks about you... a lot."
She smiled sitting next to me.
"I came to visit when you were in the coma..." she said.
"Thank you," I looked down.
She nodded.
"Izzy. I know you probably think that Aro is an ass but he isn't all that bad," she said.
"He's the most inconsiderate person I have ever met," I mumbled.
"Why do you say that?" She watched curiously.
"I..." I paused, "He wont let me talk to my mom. I have to make secret calls to her. I... I need her. He wants to take me back to that hell hole, I can barely walk.." I sighed.
"He... he does that for a reason Izzy. He has had a rough past," she said. "He has to protect our kind from humans... you are a threat. So we must keep you at the castle. Every day you are here is a day closer to someone finding out about who we are," she said lowly.
I just looked down not responding. Jonathan brought my my tray of food. "Thank you," I said feebly taking a small bite of the mashed potatoes.
"Take small bites. Don't rush it," he said and left.
Jane sighs watching me. I took the small bowl of mashed potatoes and took a bite. "How come he's so inconsiderate?" I asked
"It's not my story to tell," she bit her lip.
"Maybe not, but I might be able to understand why he is such an ass," I mumbled. "This is the best thing I have ever eaten,"
She chuckled a bit.
"Hey when you don't eat for two weeks anything probably tastes like heaven" I sighed.
She nodded.
"So about that story..." I nudged.
"Fine. But dont. Dont tell Aro I told you," she said.
I nodded taking another bite.
"Aro was born in 1300 B.C," she started.
"Woah. Woah. No way..." I interrupted her. "No way in hell..."
Jane chuckled at my reaction. "Yes. He is very very old," she said. "And wise," she paused.
"You know being old doesn't make you wise," I raised my eyebrow.
She chuckled a bit. "May I go on?"
I nodded. "He grew up with a brother and a younger sister. His mother died in childbirth with the third child. Aro was around ten when that had happened. He was happy... but things changed when his father died of an illness when he was fifteen. He was left to provide for the family," she paused. "He had to scavenge for food... hide. Move from place to place. He would steal from the local market place," she paused.
I listened very carefully.
"The first time he got caught they just gave him a warning. The second they brought him to the center of town and had him whipped," he said. "It happened multiple times. But he continued to steal just for his family," she paused.
I looked down. "Is that why? He punishes people. Because he learned it?" I whispered.
She shrugged. "I guess. He was still human at this point... when Aro was 17 his sister died of illness... him and his brother separated and lost contact," she said looking down.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
"He met a girl... they fell in love immediately and got married 6 months later and had their first kid. They moved far away and built their own home. Aro had a job at the market place. Every day he would walk into town just so he could make money to support his family,"
"Thats cute," I smiled.
"Yes..." she said. "They lived happily and his second kid was on the way. Aro was 20 when he was changed. He was on his way home from the town when he was attacked. He was bitten. He forced himself all the way home through the pain. And laid in bed for three days. Not able to move or get up. His wife had went to town to getting the doctor. They could not figure out what the illness was but they suspected that he would die. So his wife began to dig a grave. But three days later he woke -- his skin ice cold. His throat burning. He had completely changed. He had no idea what he was. He heard his wife talking to his child. 'Your father is dead son..' she said to him. Aro was quite surprised because he was very much alive. He went out seeing his wife holding his boy who was only three. The closer he got to them the more his throat burned. When she saw him she was in complete shock. "I'm alive" Aro told her. He held his wife close. He was so confused on why his throat had burned. His wife was in shock while his son only clung onto him..." she took a deep breath. "A few days later the doctor came and he seemed healthier than ever. Other than his ice cold skin... and his burning throat... and his eyes... his yes were a blood red... when the doctor had checked his pulse there was none. He was completely frozen on the inside. His heart had stopped. But Aro had no idea what he had became until one night when he went out. He smelt blood. He found someone and he killed him. He fed. Aro told me that he never felt so guilty in his entire life... he had killed someone. But it made the burn go away. But only three days later the burn had came back. He went to talk to his wife saying how he had changed. His wife just brushed it off saying it was just the illness but when he showed her that he had no heartbeat she was realized something was seriously wrong," she paused.
"He headed out to the town paranoid. He could hear everyone's conversation. He hated it. When someone tapped him on the shoulder that was the second time he fed. It was daylight. But he was so thirsty he killed the man right there not caring who saw. He finally realized what he was. He drank blood. He was a vampire. He ran home needing to talk to his wife and he told her everything about the attack. About killing two people. About being a vampire," she said.
"Did she leave?" I asked.
"No. She loved him. And supported him... but people saw him... people saw him and figured it out. People from the town grabbed her and his son... they got them to the center of town... and were going to execute them. Aro was out hunting and didn't see either of them home.... went to town seeing it. He saw his pregnant wife and his three year old boy, a noose around their neck... "
"D-did he save them?" I said tears dwelling.
"No... as soon as he got there men grabbed trying to pull him to be burned... his family was executed right in front of him... they were hung right there while he was being pulled away,"
Tears fell onto my cheeks.
"Aro lost it... he was devastated... he used his newborn strength and killed the whole entire town... he didn't want anyone of them living," she looked down.
I wiped my eyes.
"He let down his wife and child and immediately tried to bite them but nothing happened. He listened to her stomach but the fetus was dead," she said.
More tears fell. I wiped it with my shirt. "Im sorry... I'm so sorry," I whispered.
She paused for a long while.
"That's why he started the Volturi..." she said. "He met Caius... and Marcus along the way. And he saved me and Alec from being burned at the stake..." she said.
"Did he find anyone else?" I whispered feeling horrible.
"Yes... one day a woman came into the castle after the Volturi was started.... it was pouring rain... she came into the throne room wanting warmth. She saw Aro. They have this thing called a mate bond... someone's true love. Her name is Sulpicia," she said.
I nodded and smiled a bit. "He's not a bad man.... he is just scared..." I said.
She nodded. "Yes. Scared for our kind," she said.
"Thank you Jane," I said hugging her gently.
