I cycle between like 3-4 old fandoms for reading on ao3 because I’m a basic bitch who finds comfort in the familiar. For some reason I am back on my X-men bullshit again these days (obviously only here for the magneto/professor X married enemies situation), and once again I have a question about the fandom….
WHERE are all the “canon disabled character” fics??? There are so many X-men fics featuring the Erik/Charles relationship and the vast majority of them are human AUs where there is no wheelchair, set prior to the injury (I love bitter, repressed, old men with a ton of baggage between them so this does not do it for me), or somehow handwavy about Professor X being able to walk when he feels like it. It’s so perplexing to me.
In case anyone is wondering, this is not a rant about the poor disability politics of removing the wheelchair to make Professor X more fuckable (that can be for a different post lol), this is a complaint about having a defining attribute of a favorite character stripped away in 90% of the fic about them. Maybe this is a First Class problem (the era in which there was a boom in X-men fic), maybe it’s an ableism problem, who knows, but it’s frustrating.
So, anyway, does anyone have good X men recs?
