I made a baby blanket for a pregnant woman at work and I went back and forth about it like “is this weird? To like hand make something for someone when we’re like friendly acquaintances not like bffs. God why are you so fucking awkward.” Anyway I gave it to her and she said she loved it and in the back of my head I’m like yea she’s nice and probably just humoring the weirdo. Well she texted me a picture this weekend of a scrunchy faced newborn at the hospital wrapped in the blanket I made her. And I’m like. Wow. She loved it so much she took it with her! To the hospital! To give birth! She wrapped her newborn it! I am just so filled with love and joy right now.

People will love the things you make them. Because you thought of them and you cared.

I made a quilt for one of my college professors once. He and his wife had some trouble with the pregnancy and she was on bed rest for a while. He’d mentioned it to us because he might have to leave in the middle of class if something drastic happened. Nothing did happen in the end, but I knew this was a big deal for them so I made a quilt. The first real one I’d ever made.

It was an bilingual alphabet quilt. Both the dad and mom spoke Japanese and that was a big part of their lives so I made a quilt with the English alphabet and a hand embroidered picture of something that matched the letter with both the English and Japanese word for it. I appliquéd the letters and designed all the embroideries myself. It was a lot of work but when I found my professor to give it to him he almost cried when I showed him. They sent me a picture of the baby on the quilt that I still have even though the baby is I think 12 now. For a while they had it hung on the kid’s bedroom wall and they said he would bow to it in the morning to show his gratitude and respect for the work put into it.

If you think someone is worth making something for you should do it! It’s an act of love and care in a world that is so often bereft of it.

For Christmas I make my department members at work little jars of sugar scrub.

The first year I did it, no one else gave or exchanged gifts at all. Several of us got together to collect money and make a gift basket for one lady who had gone above and beyond for us all semester, but that was also spearheaded by me and a first in itself. Giving gifts to EACH OTHER? Honestly, didn’t even cross anyone else’s minds.

It takes all of like 2 hours total to mix up the sugar scrub, put it into the jars, and tie little twine bows onto each one. It’s easy and not very expensive.

When I started handing them out everyone was so shocked and grateful. It felt so good to surprise them like that. I had barely spoken to some of the people I made one for, but that was kind of the point; my little gift really improved the department’s culture. Admittedly, only briefly due to Covid starting, but that’s not the end of the story…

Last year, people got EXCITED when I said I planned to make the sugar scrubs again, telling me that I saved their hands that first winter or that their spouse was sad I had been unable to make them the previous year. This year someone else headed up the department chair and admin gifts because that’s just something we do now, 2 other people brought candy gifts for everyone, and 1 person brought me a gift in return.

My points are this:

  1. Your handmade gifts will be loved, even by people that you don’t know all that well.
  2. Your handmade gifts don’t even need to be “big” like the ones above to be loved by people you don’t know that well. Hell, there’s no telling what could happen if you just bake a batch of cookies because you’re bored and then offer them to neighbors/coworkers! Your “dumb little almost burnt” cookies could be the start of something beautiful, could be the reason you know your neighbor well enough to give or receive needed help in a couple months, could be how you meet your new best friend, could be the only thing that makes someone smile this week, could be…

As I grow older I feel my capacity to understand that Miss Piggy is not a real person reached a peak in my adolescence and is now on a steady decline. I watched a Wendy Williams interview and there's this part that's like "can we get a ring cam!" and Miss Piggy shows her bling and I'm just like fuck she's so iconic. Miss Piggy who are you wearing? Miss Piggy have you ever considered running for office??

Like literally every time I see Miss Piggy there's a period where I need to readjust to the fact that it's not a person, and I feel that period is getting longer and longer with every instance

now all my Youtube recommendations are filled with Miss Piggy interviews. I’m not complaining. Miss Piggy what’s your secret to ageing so graciously

It's not just the audience; professional journalists, hosts, and actors report it is legitimately difficult to not see the Muppet as a person, and it is, in fact, incredibly easy to interview or act with them once the performer gets properly set up.

Like that one time they couldn't figure out why Kermit's audio was so garbage... then realized they'd put the mic on him instead of the performer.

this has been a very longstanding issue - before the muppet show was even a thing some muppets appeared in commercials, such as rolf the dog they had a continual problem where when people directing/shooting the dogfood commercial would give dirrection to rolf that they would be speaking to the muppet, to which rolf REPEATEDLY had to tell them ‘i cant hear you, you have to talk to him’ and point at the performer underneath him rolf is one of the most embarrassing muppets to need this direction as the performer is this, damn, obvious when not on camera

‘sir, i am a bathroom mat, the man you need to talk to is back there’

I did an interview with Gonzo one time, and when I got into the Zoom call, it was the actor on screen trying to figure out his audio. And then once he did, he went like “OKAY!” and then just like dove to the floor and it was Gonzo and there was never a moment when I doubted that the dude was just Gonzo’s tech guy

Когда хозяин где-то шарахается, а ты дома один.Нечёсаный. Неглаженый. Нецелованный….
